Around the Gaming World News Report 03.09.12

March 9, 2012 | Posted by Chris Ferrell

Hey everyone, welcome to the latest installment of Around The Gaming World. If this is your first time checking in I try to cover some of the major stories for each console in addition to news, which in my opinion, is the news of the week. And yes, I still did find a way to include Mass Effect 3 in the news report even though it’s already launched.

No Cloud Saves for Mass Effect 3 – EA has been made aware of an issue that prevents Mass Effect 2 save files that either exist in the cloud, or were transferred to a new 360 through the cloud, from being imported into ME3. If your ME2 save exists in the cloud and you’re playing from its original console, simply move it back to your hard drive and it should import fine. If it exists on a new console and was transferred through the cloud, it’ll need to be moved back to its original 360, and then re-transferred to the new system using a memory card or USB thumb drive. If you don’t have the original Xbox you are SOL.

First, I’m happy to hear this news before I upgraded to a new Xbox. If I had lost all of my ME2 saves I would be incredibly pissed off right now. I have hours and hours of time sunk into Mass Effect 2 and losing the ability to import all of my decisions into Mass Effect 3 would have been crushing. For anyone that has lost access to their ME2 saves I feel terrible for you. Hopefully BioWare finds a way to fix this issue sooner than later.

Halo 4 is Shaping Up – 343 Industries is bringing some fan favorites back the Halo franchise. The fan favorite weapon the battle rifle will be making a return in the upcoming Halo 4. No plot details were given, but some of the multiplayer maps were shown off. The combat has added text to the screen showing players when they are able to make a headshot or multi-kill.

Its going to be very interesting to see how the first Halo game made without Bungie turns out. 343 do seem to have a good handle on the franchise and many of their team is former Bungie employees. In fact Frank O’Connor has jumped to continue managing the story of the Halo franchise.

The return of the battle rifle is something fans have been clamoring for. If you got good with this weapon you were deadly. I think that’s part of the reason why the game was not in the latest Halo games. It really wasn’t fun playing online if you went up against someone who was a battle rifle expert. As for the new displays showing off headshots and multi-kills it sounds a lot like what is done in the Call of Duty games. I’m not sure it’s something the Halo franchise needs, but I’ll give it a chance.

Ratchet and Clank in HD – A Ratchet and Clank HD Collection was spotted and pulled from Amazon France. Eurogamer got an image of the listing before the takedown. Amazon France showed the game as having a May 16, 2012 launch date.

The re-release in HD seems to be a trend for Sony. In my opinion it’s a good trend as this gives younger gamers a chance to play games that an older generation grew up with. Sony has modernized many PS2 series, including God of War, Sly Cooper, ICO & Shadow of the Colossus, and Jak & Daxter. For the most parts these updates have been pretty good. I have no reason to think that the Ratchet and Clank HD Collection will fail.

Assassin’s Creed 3 Coming to Wii-U – Ubisoft has announced that Assassin’s Creed 3 is slated to come to multiple consoles including the Wii-U. The main character is named Ratohnhaké:ton and is “of Native American and English heritage.” He has also adopted the name Connor.

First off it feels strange to see that a major release is coming to all three major console vendors. It has been a long time since the Wii has had a shared major release. This is great news for Nintendo that they can be included in the launch day release of Assassin’s Creed 3. I’m sure they hope is that getting major releases will help to cut into the marketshare already taken up by Sony and Microsoft.

I look forward to seeing the controller setup that the Wii-U makes use of. Will the control scheme be predominantly motion based or make use of only the physical controller? My hope is that both control schemes would be made available to gamers. It would allow gamers to play in the format they like best.

Peter Molyneux is Leaving Microsoft – Peter Molyneux has left Microsoft and Lionhead Studios for startup 22 Cans. Perhaps best known as the creator of the Fable series, Molyneux will remain as a creative consultant for the Fable series. In a statement Molyneux said:

“It is with mixed emotions that I made the decision to leave Microsoft and Lionhead Studios, the company that I co-founded in 1997, at the conclusion of development of Fable: The Journey, I remain extremely passionate and proud of the people, products and experiences that we created.”

He also followed up with a tweet announcing his move to 22 Cans:

I have to admit I’m very surprised to see this news. It seems as though Molyneux has been with Lionhead Studios and Microsoft for as long as I can remember. I’ve always enjoyed the Fable games but never thought there were anything earth shatteringly amazing. That being said, there is a definite storyline and progression that has been followed throughout the story and Lionhead Studios has created quite the immersive world.

Molyneaux has been a longtime advocate of the Xbox and has played a major and personal role in making the Fable series a success. His departure to go to a startup company does intrigue me though. I’ll be keeping an eye open to see what games Molyneux is involved in, in the future.

Thanks for checking in for your weekly dose of gaming news. Before closing everything up, I wanted to make an offer to the readers. I’m looking to get a better banner for this column, and my photoshop skills are lacking to say the least. If anyone wants to try their hand at making a new banner for Around The Gaming World that would be great. If I pick your banner I’ll give you a section in one of my future columns for you to talk about whatever gaming issue you want. Just something to consider if you can do photoshop and want to rant about games.

I have to say, I have been very impressed with Mass Effect 3 so far. I’m only about 11 hours into the game and I’m maybe ¼ of the way through the game. This one is shaping up to be a long game. I’m looking to start playing some multiplayer to up my readiness level and see how much of a difference that makes.

If anyone else wants to play some multiplayer on Mass Effect 3 feel free to hit me up on Xbox Live. My gamertag is Spidey616. I need to up my galactic readiness level and I’m told multiplayer helps a lot.
