Around the Gaming World News Report 04.27.12

April 27, 2012 | Posted by Chris Ferrell

Hey everyone, welcome to the latest installment of Around The Gaming World. If this is your first time checking in I try to cover some of the major stories for each console in addition to news, which in my opinion, is the news of the week.

I LOVE the GoW series, own them all, play them all regularly. For some reason, Im not digging the prequel thing right now. IF it turns out to be just something to keep the fans happy until the REAL game comes out then fine Ill play along.

I’m interested in the prequel idea but mostly because I haven’t played the games. It would make a good starting point for me. Did GoW 3 end with a cliffhanger, or something that would build to a 4th game? If so, I’m sure Sony will push out GoW 4 in a couple years.

1. So first of all you start this column off as a liar. We both know that you don’t know any females let alone have any females friends that also play video games.

2. The fact that you watch True Blood makes you a pansy and proves that I have more testosterone in my ball point than you do in both of your balls.

3. So what does surprise you? It seems like nothing does, or at least that’s what you imply by your over use of the term “I’m not surprised.”

You probably got your Xbox from Rent A Center after seeing Hulk Hogan endorsing them on those cheap commercials with one of the worst quarterbacks to ever be inducted in the HOF.

Don’t get me started on WVU either.

I get the feeling I know you from somewhere… just not sure where. Contrary to popular belief I do have some female friends, I guess I’m breaking the nerd stereotype. True Blood can be a good show I am a season behind though.

And now, it’s on to the news!

Coming Soon To Your Xbox, Skype – Located within a recent job posting over on the Microsoft Careers site, the company lists some interesting information:

“Skype is seeking a motivated Software Engineer with an unrelenting drive for working on and solving customer-based issues. As a member of the Skype Xbox Engineering Team in London, you will have a strong technical background developing client and/or embedded software.

Microsoft made it no secret they had plans for Skype after having purchased the service. It makes sense for them to bake Skype directly into the Xbox 360. Many Xbox consoles have the Kinect peripheral and this should make it easy for video chatting. Even if they don’t make use of the Kinect I don’t see any reason why Microsoft couldn’t leverage the controller and headset combo to allow voice chat.

A lot of people don’t realize that the Facebook video messaging is built upon the Skype service. What I think would be really cool, is if Skype for Xbox allowed you to video chat with your Facebook friends. It is probably wishful thinking on my part, but you have to admit it would be cool to see.

New Call of Duty Coming Soon – The reveal date for the next Call of Duty has been announced.

The next entry in the series is set to be revealed during the NBA playoffs on May 1 on TNT.

The rumor is that the next game will be by Treyarch and may have a setting in the future, but we’ll find out on May 1.

I’m going to say something that’s probably going to be unpopular. I really just don’t care much about the next Call of Duty game. Don’t get me wrong, the game is still alright, I’m just bored with it. Nothing really changes each year, you just get new multiplayer maps and a new campaign. You have the same weapons and the same gameplay style. I would love to see something fresh and new in the Call of Duty franchise. If the game is set in the future, maybe some of these future weapons will get me interested in the game again.

Uncharted 3 Game of the Year Edition – Developer Naughty Dog has announced that they will be releasing a GOTY edition of their hit Uncharted 3. The GOTY version includes a whopping 14 DLC items. This includes:

Classic Skins Pack 1-3: 25 multiplayer skins.
Multiplayer Accessory Pack: Includes Killzone 3 skins and accessories
Flashback Maps 1 and 2: Eight remade maps from Uncharted 1 & 2
Drake’s Deception Map Pack: Four multiplayer maps.
The Fort Co-Op: Takes place in the fortress from Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.
Co-Op Shade Survival: Fight against the Djinn cooperatively.
Doughnut Skin Pack: Five “fat” skins,
Rogues Skin Pack 1 and 2: Skins of 14 enemies..woo.

Currently, no release date has been set for the game.

They are putting a ton of DLC into this GOTY edition of Uncharted 3. If I hadn’t bought Uncharted 3 and it was on my buy list I would be purchasing the GOTY edition. Combine a fun game with tons of DLC and new customers will certainly be interested.

However, if I had purchased Uncharted 3 shortly after the release and then purchased the bulk of this DLC I would be a little frustrated. If you’ve done that you have more than likely spent over $100 on this game and now all of that is being released a year later for much less price. GOTY editions of games seem to punish the early adopters. They spend a ton of cash to get on board with a game early and then a year later the game and all the DLC is wrapped up in one pretty little package for a cheaper price. In all honesty, the prevalence of these GOTY games has made me hold off on some games because I know if I wait a little while I can purchase a version that contains all the DLC.

No Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Perks For You – First BioWare changed the multiplayer perks missions to being biweekly. It was also announced that BioWare and Sony have not yet reached an agreement to allow the multiplayer challenges to take place on the PlayStation Network.

I have no problem with BioWare shifting the multiplayer challenges to every other week. They are still happening often enough that gamers will stay interested in the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer. However, it really sucks for the folks on PSN they aren’t getting to experience these challenges. They are a lot of fun, but more importantly successfully completing a challenge allows you to receive newer weapons and perks much quicker. Hopefully BioWare and Sony are able to come to some sort of agreement and get these multiplayer challenges on PSN. Right now PC and Xbox gamers are having a lot more fun than their PS3 compatriots.

Nintendo is Hurting – The company today released the results of its fiscal year that ended March 31 and revealed that revenue slid 36.2 percent compared with the previous fiscal year. Nintendo ended its year with revenue of 647.6 billion yen (about $8 billion), versus over 1 trillion yen in the prior year.

Due to sluggish sales, Nintendo posted a net loss for the year of 43.2 billion yen ($532.5 million). In the prior year, it had generated a profit of 77.6 billion yen.

The writing has been on the wall for a while that Nintendo is in trouble. The sales of the Wii have been steadily tapering off and to stimulate sales of the 3DS Nintendo dropped the price. Right now, Nintendo loses money on every 3DS they sell. Combine this with less emphasis on games for the Wii and it becomes a bit more understandable how Nintendo can be operating at a loss for the first time ever. That doesn’t even factor in the fact that casual gaming such as iOS and Android games is becoming more and more popular.

The troubles of Nintendo remind me a lot of how Sega eventually lost out in the console war. Like Sega, Nintendo is one of the stalwart companies from the early days of gaming. Sega created the Dreamcast which was innovative and unique for its time. Nintendo is much the same with the motion controls on the Wii and 3D handheld gaming with the 3DS. As good as the Dreamcast was people at large just didn’t have much interest in it, and despite releasing some really good games the console flopped leading to Sega eventually exiting the console market. My worry is that the Wii-U could be Nintendo’s Dreamcast. An innovative system that just doesn’t catch on in part due to price and competition.

Gamers used to buy Sega systems for the console specific games and characters. It was blasphemous to consider the fact that one day they might be playing a Sonic the Hedgehog game on their Nintendo console. If the Wii-U is not successful we could all be playing Mario or Zelda on the PS4s and next-gen Xboxes in a few years

Leisure Suit Larry HD meets its Kickstarter goal – Replay Games should have no issue finishing up work on Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards. With only six days left on the Kickstarter campaign, the $500,000 goal has been met.

I didn’t pick this news because it was specifically about Leisure Suit Larry. While the old Leisure Suit Larry games are funny, that isn’t the most interesting part of this story. I think it’s pretty innovative to use a site like KickStarter to get the backing to produce this game. It doesn’t rely on one of the big game studios like Activision or EA. More importantly it keeps the game and power over the development of it in the hands of a small group of developers.

Honestly, I think this could be an interesting new method for funding and developing new indie games. If a game is of interest to the public at large they have a chance to help fund it and in turn gain some perks. Does that mean the game will come out and be awesome? No, that’s the risk you take when you invest in a project. You could end up getting nothing, or you might help to fund the creation of a game you will love.

Thanks for checking in for your weekly dose of gaming news. It should be interesting to see how some stories, such as the next version of the Xbox and PS3, progress over the next week. As always, please make use of the comments to let me know what you are thinking. Feedback is always welcomed.

Pardon me for a moment while I shamelessly self promote. I recently joined a podcast as one of the weekly host. The podcast is entitled All Things Good And Nerdy. With a name like that we have to cover video games. I’m looking for suggestions on game topics you would want to see/hear discussed by a group of nerds. Let me know in the comments below. If you’re interested in checking it out the audio is on iTunes just search All Things Good And Nerdy. But seriously, send me discussion topics, I’d love to hear what people want to hear about.

If you find yourselves bored on Xbox Live, send me a message. I’m always looking to put together a good team on the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer to tackle some gold challenges. Without a good team you just get your ass kicked.
