Call of Duty Elite Releasing Alongside Modern Warfare 3

It looks like the Wall Street Journal let the cat out of the bag a bit early.

Breaking the embargo on the news by a few hours, the WSJ is reporting that Call of Duty Elite will be out this year alongside Modern Warfare 3. The system, being developed by Beachhead Studio, is the oft-rumored paid service for the series.

Not everything will be only available by pay, though. “Portions of the service will be free,” include a Groups feature similar to Facebook.

On the paid side, there will be an ability to display stats on player performances, “gauging factors such as which weapons have been most successful for them in killing enemies.” Also, the fee will include all map packs released during the year.

Activision hasn’t finalized a price yet, but said it expects it to be less than other “online-entertainment services,” such as Netflix’s $8 monthly fee. Also, the WSJ said that “players will still be able to compete against each other online without subscribing to the service.”
