Game Plan Japan News Report 05.03.12

May 3, 2012 | Posted by Ernest Lin

Konnichiwa and welcome to another Game Plan Japan! Every week I will be bringing you the top stories about games from a small country named Japan. Some games I report on you will know of. Other games you will never have heard of and will never make it stateside. Sincerest apologies for the lack of Game Plan Japan last week & the delay this week! The past two weeks have been the busiest and worst of my college career (I am currently still very sick). I want to thank my editor, Adam Larck for his understanding and letting me temporarily halt GPJ until my important course work was finished!

In much happier news, I received my confirmation e-mail for E3 2012! That’s right – I’ll be in Los Angeles this June to cover the event, along with 411mania’s Jeffrey Harris. Also I am leaving to study abroad in Japan in two weeks and will be flying directly to LA from Tokyo for the expo. This will be my first E3 so I am really excited, even if I’ll be jetlagged!

Persona 4 Golden for PS Vita Arriving in North America This Fall

Atlas has finally confirmed that Persona 4 Golden for PS Vita is making its way to North America this fall. I was getting a little worried that a release outside Japan was not happening and what a shame that would be! Unlike Persona 3 Portable for PSP, Persona 4 Golden will be significantly improved over its console predecessor without anything cut! It is set to be one of PS Vita’s best games as it is an enhanced and expanded version of the original Persona 4.

How much of an improvement is Atlus bringing? All the graphics and sounds have been remastered to take advantage of the PS Vita’s hardware. Furthermore, players will have new Personas to collect. There is even a new character along with additional story events, anime cutscenes, and 1.5 times the amount of voiced dialogue. Especially interesting is an online “dungeon rescue” feature that can be used when you are about to die in the TV world. By activating “dungeon rescue” you will contact players in real-time for so they can come to your aid.

Persona 4 Golden is set for a Japanese release on June 14th.

Platinum Games Founder & Resident Evil Creator Shinji Mikami Unveils Zwei Game

Like Ridley Scott has with his upcoming summer film Prometheus, Shinji Mikami is returning to the genre he helped define. His new game is codenamed Zwei and will be serving as its executive director. The game is still in the very early development despite work beginning in 2010. A specific platform has not even been decided yet though it will most likely be the PlayStation 3 & Xbox 360. Mikami commented on “Zwei,” saying, “I’ve found my focus and once again I’m striving for pure survival horror. I am being very hands-on to see that the quality is there.”

On top of that, this will be Mikami’s first game at his new Tango Gameworks development studio. Tango Gameworks parent is Zenimax so expect Zwei to be published by Bethesda.

First Trailer for Metal Gear Solid HD Edition (PS Vita) Shows Off Touch Controls

Some of the touch controls and details of Metal Gear Solid HD Edition are shown off in this first trailer Konami released earlier this week. Players will be able to utilize the touch screen to switch inventory items and weapons, compensating for the PS Vita’s lack of secondary shoulder buttons. The touch screen can also be used to peer around corners and zoom a weapon’s scope.

Metal Gear Solid HD Edition for PS Vita packs the full editions of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3. What this means is its MGS 2 is identical to the Substance edition, which added VR missions. Likewise MGS 3 is actually the Subsistence edition – complete with user-controlled camera and the series very first games: Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Lastly, Metal Gear Solid HD Edition includes Transfarring and cloud save support, as I detailed a few weeks back.

Metal Gear Solid HD Edition will be released in Japan on June 28th with a worldwide release later this summer.

Dead or Alive 5 Breast Physics & Clothes Transparency are Character & Costume-Specific

In a recent interview with, Dead or Alive 5 director Yohei Niibori revealed how Team Ninja is evolving the series to be even more realistic: by having the breast bounciness and transparency of clothes be specific to both the character and costume she wears! Sounds like players will be able to change the amount of bounce they like to see in even more ways to hopefully distract opponents!

Project X Zone Trailer Gives First Glimpse at its Fast-Paced Insanity

Here’s your first look at the Capcom, Sega, & Namco Bandai 3DS RPG collaboration in action. Plus, additional characters have been announced! From Capcom, Hsien-Ko (Darkstalkers) and Frank West (Dead Rising) join the fray. Meanwhile, Sega is brining Sephyr & Leanne/Reanbell from Resonance of Fate to Project X Zone. From Namco Bandai, Alisa Ilinichina Amiella and Soma Schicksal from God Eater will be in the game. For previously confirmed characters and more information, check out one of my previous columns here.

Pokémon Black & White 2 Trailer Release & 3DS-Specific Apps In-Production

In my opinion, Nintendo had a strong opportunity to push even more 3DS sales had they made Pokémon Black & White 2 specific to their latest handheld. On the other hand, Nintendo will have a huge potential market for them as there are still millions of DS units out there and the 3DS’s backwards capability. For those of you who did hop on to the 3DS, you will be able to download 2 3DS specific apps related to the two new games. One is called Pokémon AR Searcher and is an augmented reality shooting game. The really cool aspect of the Pokémon AR Searcher is any Pokémon you catch in it will carry over to your Black 2 or White 2 game! This app will be released the same day as the new Pokémon games on June 23 and cost 300 yen.

A few weeks later on July 14, a new Pokédex app will be available to download on the e-Shop. It is an updated version of the previous Pokédex 3DS app and costs 1,500 yen.

As of now, there is no word on a release of these apps outside of Japan, however, chances are high. Both are a piece of cake to localize.

Grand Knights History North American Release Cancelled

On Tuesday, Xseed Games contacted Siliconera regarding the cancellation of Vanillaware’s Grand Knights History (PSP) release in North America. A lack of development resources needed for localization was cited as the reason. Vanillaware already is hard at work on Dragon’s Crown, which will be published by Atlus who gained rights from Ignition. Sorry to all the fans who will just have to import or hope for a fan translation patch.
