[PODCAST] D&D 5e Actual Play – Eberron: Heirs of Destiny 05

We were a couple of players short this week on Eberron, but we still managed to hammer out a decent plot-filled episode! Exploring all manner of things, from the job we were assigned to do, to one of the brothers’ burgeoning magical powers. Which is actually what I want to talk about.

So, a lot of the times in D&D campaigns, when traditionally non-spellcasting classes suddenly gain access to spellcasting, there is never really a lot of focus put onto the whys and wherefores of the acquisition. It’s just accepted as writ, and suddenly the character knows all of this stuff and exactly how it all works. Mechanically that’s fine, but narratively? Well, that’s kind a boring way to go about it, isn’t it?

I much prefer having a reason behind it. Either the magic is coming from somewhere, or it’s something you’ve been training in for a while and have just now gotten the hang of. A level 3 fighter doesn’t just suddenly decide “Oh, I’m going Eldritch Knight.”, it’s a process they’ve been building to, and has suddenly paid off. Or, it is a random happenstance, and how you react to SUDDENLY I’VE GOT MAGIC POWERS is part of the story. At least, that’s what I try to explore in this session. Hopefully it comes across.
