Star Trek (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) Preview
The new action-packed and exciting new Star Trek videogame based on the newly rebooted hit movie franchise will be hitting consoles early next year. But at E, we got a special first look at the game in an elaborate viewing theater modeled after the hallways of the starship Enterprise. The video for the behind closed door preview of the game was in 3D and on an exceptionally large digital flatscreen television, so the picture looked fantastic and it did look great in 3D as well. The new game features a new story composed by the screenwriters of the new Trek movies, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and also writer of the God of War franchise, Marianne Krawczyk. But the real key is the announcement that the entire Enterprise cast from the 2009 movie and its sequel due out next year will all be reprising their roles in this game including Chris Pine as James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock.
The demo begins on the bridge of the Enterprise. The Enterprise is answering a distress call on New Vulcan. The Vulcans who have survived the destruction of their home planet have founded a new colony on another planet. Kirk and Spock go to the transporter room and get some new phaser weapons from Scotty (once again played by the living legend Simon Pegg). Kirk and Spock are beamed to a base outside the planet’s surface. They walk right into mayhem as the Vulcans inside the base attack Kirk and Spock who set their phasers to stun to knock them out and Spock even uses the Vulcan nerve pinch. The Vulcans have apparently been infected with some sort of venom. The gameplay showed how you can use the tricorder device to examine downed Vulcans and parts of the environment. Spock and Kirk go further into the base to investigate where they encounter the villains of the game, the newly designed reptilian race from classic Star Trek lore known as the Gorn! Kirk and Spock are soon attacked by many Gorn, but fortunately you are able to use the tricorder to mark targets and the Enterprise targets torpedo shots on your enemies in a drone-like attack. But soon more Gorn prepare to attack in their ships as the demo ends.
The game continues to look a lot better. I was excited by the footage I got to see from the game last year, and now we get to see a more complete, polished version of the game here complete with the Gorn who I’m very excited about making a return to Trek in this game. The game will feature co-op 1 or 2 player action between Kirk and Spock. Who ever you don’t play as will be controlled by CPU AI. It looks like you will get to play with some fun updated versions and gadgets of Trek mythology.
Star Trek is set for an early 2013 release on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
