The Average Gamer 10.30.2012 Holiday Buying Guide Part I Edition
Welcome back the Average Gamer. We are at our new time slot coming at you on Tuesdays from here on out until we need to make another change.
Its only been a few days since the last time I posted and not much has changed. I have beaten all of the bosses in Borderlands 2 and each side quest is 100% complete now. There was one minor hang-up, Master Gee. I was in a party of three and beat this boss after a fifteen minute battle. Well, as I beat him, my game locks up and the game freezes. I restart and the other two have the mission complete but not me. So, I have to do that again.
Top 5 List
So with a shortened week comes a new top five list. This week is top five reasons the NHL is dead to me.
5. Their season seems to be continuous all year long
4. The most popular player barely played last year.
3. The commissioner is an asshole
2. Their team names are not original or fun.
1. Just as they get into a popular groove they lockout again.
Holiday Shopping Guide
Halloween is just about here and we are getting close to holiday shopping time. I am going to take the next four weeks and outline some holiday shopping suggestions on games, consoles, and accessories. This week I am going to outline a few shops to check out and deals to take advantage of. If you have any other suggestions on locations or anything please feel free to toss them in. These are just my personal experiences. I once picked up the Xbox 360 on launch day using these same techniques and ideas.
Trade In Value
Every few weeks, Best Buy will match one hundred percent of your trade in credit that you bring in. This week for example is one of those weeks. If you have any games to trade in take advantage of it while you can. This is a great chance to stock up on holiday shopping cash through gift cards. While you are there, if you plan on purchasing Halo 4 or Call of Duty Black Ops, place a pre-order and after you purchase the game, you will receive a twenty dollar rewards certificate. I strongly encourage you each to pay the fifteen dollars as well and become unlocked gamers rewards’ members. Finally, on Black Friday, expect some decent game and movie deals here. Don’t rush to be the first in line at whatever crazy time in the morning they will open. I normally make it to Best Buy around eight or nine am and even though the line to check out is insane, there are plenty of games and movies left. Be sure to pick up a few of these as well as they are well worth it. Another great benefit of the Gamers Club Unlocked is they have a sixty day price match guarantee on their games. This is great if you think a game will drop in price but don’t want to wait.
Amazon’s deals of the hour is always a great place to pick up a few decent games or movies as discounted rates. Last year the new Assassin’s Creed game was only twenty dollars in the hour it was going. On top of this, Amazon has some pretty sweet deals on games in general. If you sign up for Amazon Prime as well, you can get great deals on shipping as well. I am a prime member for the instant streaming as well as the discounted shipping. I am sure there are plenty of other benefits to it, but these are my favorite. Be sure to check out this site during Cyber-Monday.
Last year Walmart really threw its hat into the gaming ring on Black Friday. There were several top title games that were marked down to twenty dollars. Some of the games included Gears of War 3, Need for Speed the Run, Assassin’s Creed, and WWE. These titles normally don’t drop within a month of release yet, Walmart somehow pulled that off. Another great thing about Walmart is their return policy is much nicer than other stores. If you give a gift without a receipt they will normally take it back and give store credit. Good luck getting that from other stores out there during the holiday season.
Shop around as much as possible before hand. Each store is going to offer great deals and offer extras with major releases. This week the WWE game will release. Best Buy is giving the DX DVD or Blu-Ray. This is a great benefit and great extra gift. It will make you look like you spent way more than you did.
Do some research online. A great website is cheapassgamer.com. It is free to register for and even better, it posts deals and ads each week. Feel free to start a chat asking about a certain deal and other gamers will point you in the right direction. This is a great resource for finding cheaper games that you are looking for.
Alright boys and girls, that is it for this week. Next week we will jump in with part two where we get into specifics about titles, consoles, and accessories. Please feel free to toss your favorite stores or websites down below in the new comments section.
Also, if you are interested in writing for 411mania, please let me know. I am looking for columnist and news reporters for the games’ section. In addition to just writing for an awesome site, you will also be given great opportunities like attending E3, being able to review titles, and also being invited to press events. This is a great opportunity for gamers who are looking to become writers in any field one day as well as anyone looking for a new hobby. The columns can be PC related, genre related, or whatever you would like. If you are interested, please email me at [email protected]
Have a great week everyone.
