411’s UFC Fight Night 109 Report 5.28.17

May 28, 2017 | Posted by Robert Winfree

Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC Fight Night 109. I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for this event, and thanks to everyone who’s reading live this early in the morning. This isn’t a great card on paper but the top two fights are relevant in the light heavyweight division. Two time title challenger Alexander Gustafsson takes on another former title challenger in Glover Teixeira, the winner likely gets a shot at the title pending Jones vs. Cormier while the co-main event is a battle for a top five spot between Volkan Oezdemir and the surging Misha Cirkunov where the winner likely finds a title eliminator next. That division is in such a bad spot that the winner there could get a title shot depending on timing and injuries as well. The rest of the card is a little lackluster on paper, but the fights always have the potential to be awesome so let’s all hope that’s the way things go this time. This event was originally supposed to be the UFC’s debut in Denmark but the UFC switched it early this year to a return to the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden and has John Gooden and Dan Hardy on commentary.

For those keeping track of the regulatory madness that is MMA right now, the Swedish commission isn’t using either the old unified rules or the new ones but a hybrid of the two.

So instead of the rule in the new set that requires both palms or fists fingers from both hands are required to be down here. Of course a knee down is always a downed opponent. Someone end this insanity. Also the Fight Pass stream is a little twitchy to start things off, I double checked and it’s not Comcast this time, hopefully that’s just Fight Pass but we’ll know for sure when we move to Fox Sports 1 after the first two fights.

Damir Hadzovic lost his UFC debut a little over a year ago when he was taken out by Mairbek Taisumov, two failed attempts to book him against Yusuke Kasuya followed and now he’s looking to get the all important first UFC win. Marcin Held has gone 0-2 in the UFC losing to Diego Sanchez and a Clucky decision to Joe Lauzon, but Clucky influenced or not if he drops to 0-3 here he’ll be out of the UFC incredibly quickly, he desperately needs a win here if he wants any kind of positive momentum. The odds favor the more experienced Held at -340 to +260 on Hadzovic.

Lightweight Bout: Damir Hadzovic (10-3, 156 lbs.) vs. Marcin Held (22-6, 156 lbs.)

The Final Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Hadzovic for his work this evening. Yeah, Held was looking for an Imanari roll and fell right into that knee. No interview for Hadzovic, not sure why. Well here’s the finish if you missed it, perfect timing as Held rolled straight into the power shot. Basically identical to what happened to Imanari when he took on Joachim Hansen a few years ago.

Darren Till (13-0-1) hasn’t lost as a professional but also hasn’t fought since a draw with Nicolas Dalby in October of 2015, he also missed weight for this fight. Till needs a big performance to remind people why they were excited about him and help get past his weight gaff. Jessin Ayari (16-3) is on a heck of a run, he’s won seven fights in a row including a successful UFC debut late last year. Ayari is trying to keep that momentum going and start moving towards contender status in the UFC. Despite his weight issues Till is a moderate -340 favorite against +260 for Ayari.

We get an eye poke to Ayari so there’s time and the doctor is in to check on Ayari’s eye. There’s some blood under the eye of Ayari, that came before the poke though. The doctor has no issue with the fight continuing and we’re back to action. Till lands a body kick. Till slides away from a punch. They clinch and Ayari lands a short right as they break. Till lands one more counter left as time expires.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Till, 30-26 Till overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Darren Till via unanimous decision (29-27, 30-27 x2)

I can see Ayari getting the third as Till coasted for much of it. Till on the mic now, he was shocked that Ayari kept recovering as he’s knocked out gorilla’s in the gym with those shots. He talks about angling off in this fight as Ayari rushed in, he puts over Ayari again. He says he wants to fight tomorrow night and promises to win the belt. He speaks some Portuguese as he lives in Brazil, specifically for his daughter, then does his own translation. That wraps up Fight Pass fights, to Fox Sports 1 for the remainder of the event.

Nico Musoke hasn’t fought since January of 2015 when he was defeated by Albert Tumenov. Musoke is 3-2 overall in the UFC but that long layoff as well as coming off of a loss puts him in a near must win situation here. Bojan Velickovic is 1-1-1 in the UFC and coming off of a loss to Sultan Aliev and hasn’t won in the UFC in over a year, he needs a win as well to reassert himself as a prospect of note in the division. The Final Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Velickovic for his contributions to this event. Velickovic gets an interview after that. He says he met some awesome people from Manchester and he dedicates the win to the people who were hurt or killed in the Manchester attack recently. He worked hard for this fight, thanks his coaches and training partners for making the trip here and for all of their work with him. He was prepared to grind for three rounds if necessary but is happy about the finish and saw that Musoke gassed a little and he kept grinding away until he found the right blow.

For those who missed it, here’s the finish. They both used those same combinations repeatedly, Musoke just couldn’t get his head either down or back far enough and that right landed dead on the temple. The legs went down and it was all over but the shouting.

Reza Madadi has traded wins and losses while going 3-3 in the UFC, he’s coming off of a lopsided loss to Joseph Duffy and he’s trying to avoid the first losing streak of his career. Not sure at all how Madadi got two rounds, and Dan Hardy saw something completely different from me as he thought Madadi won. I now have to question Hardy’s visual acuity. No interview for Silva, and I need a palate cleanser after that.

Trevor Smith is 4-4 in the UFC and coming off of a loss to Andrew Sanchez, he’s trying to keep get his UFC record up above .500 again. Smith also can’t afford another UFC losing streak at this point in his career as it would cement him as a journeyman fighter. Chris Camozzi is on a two fight losing streak at the moment with losses to Thales Leites and Dan Kelly and can ill afford another three fight losing streak, much less one in his third UFC run which could easily see him cut yet again. The odds are with Camozzi at -170 to +140 on Smith.

Pedro Munhoz is 3-2 with 1 No Contest in the UFC, those losses are to top contenders Raphael Assuncao and Jimmie Rivera, but is riding a two fight winning streak having finished both of those via guillotine choke. Mic time for Munhoz. He puts over Stasiak as a tough guy but he wants to prove he’s the best in the division. He says he’ll be back in the gym next week and he’ll be ready to fight anyone in a couple of weeks.

That’s it for prelims, to the main card still on Fox Sports 1. We open with thoughts and condolences to the victims of the Manchester attacks on Monday and a moment of silence from the audience to start.

Jack Hermansson just snapped a nine fight winning streak and is 1-1 in the UFC overall, he’s trying to rebound from that setback here and prove he’s still a worthwhile addition to the UFC’s roster. Alex Nicholson is 1-2 in the UFC with one loss up at light heavyweight and a loss to Sam Alvey, he’s coming off of the loss to Alvey. He really needs a win as well to prove he’s still worth keeping around the promotion as a loss could easily send him back to the regional scene. Hermansson’s experience has him the favorite at -165 to +135 on Nicholson.

The First Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Hermansson for his work here, and would like to note they have fired the intern who did not update their tickets once the location for this event was changed from Denmark to Sweden. That arm trapping pass to mount was pretty sweet. Hermansson on the mic now. He says it’s awesome to be in Sweden, he was born there but moved to Norway and this is his first fight in Sweden. He talks about his game plan, says winning here is a dream come true and thanks the crowd. He wants to get back in the cage as soon as possible and wants a ranked opponent to match his ambitions.

This doesn’t actually show the arm trapping process but you can see Nicholson’s right arm trapped by the mount, limits defensive options and then when he gives up the back it’s all over.

Peter Sobotta (16-5-1) is 3-1 in his current UFC run and coming off of a win over Nicolas Dalby. Ben Saunders (21-7-2) is 4-1 in his current UFC run, only losing to Patrick Cote, and he’s coming off of a somewhat Cluckified decision over Court McGee. I have to retract being surprised by Sobotta’s patience, he remained measured but never really let Saunders off of the hook. My bad there guys. Sobotta on the mic now. He says everything went really good and dedicates the win to his striking coach of three years. He puts over Saunders on the mat and says he didn’t want to risk that position, he broke his left hand at the beginning of the second round but stuck with it and says he wants to move towards the top ten of the division. Volkan Oezdemir backed into a top five ranking at light heavyweight by virtue of a split decision win over Ovince Saint-Preux in a terrible fight then having two fighters ranked above him leave the promotion. Misha Cirkunov hasn’t lost since 2012, an overall winning streak of eight, and is 4-0 in the UFC with all four being finishes. Cirkunov is trying to crack the top five of the division and could find himself in a title eliminator next if he wins here, similarly attempting to get some life in a division that has been floundering for a while now. Alexander Gustafsson has been a top light heavyweight for a while now but has lost to Jon Jones, Anthony Johnson, and Daniel Cormier. Gustafsson is coming off of a win over Jan Blachowicz and is trying to get back to the title scene here, the utter dearth of top shelf contenders works in his favor but he can’t afford a loss here if he wants to possibly set a date with the champion later this year. Glover Teixeira is coming off of a win over Jared Cannonier but was absolutely starched by Anthony Johnson before that. Teixeira needs a win here if he wants another crack at the title, he’s 37 and while the division’s status could see him wind up in the title scene anyway a loss could see him relegated to high level gatekeeper status.
