Scott Jorgensen defeats John Albert by submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:59 of round 1.


Featherweight bout: Nam Phan (145.4) vs. Dennis Siver (146)

ROUND ONE: Sive comes out swinging. He’s sticking his jab out there and follows up with a series of leg kicks. Phan seems to be having a difficult time countering. We have our first Siver spinning back kick. Siver has outstruck Phan 30-12. Phan hits a double jab. Siver is scoring points with a jab, jab, kick combo. Siver knocks Phan down but he gets right back up. Siver kicks him in the ribs. Phan lands a leg kick, Siver counters. Another spinning back kick lands in the gut.

SCORECARD: Siver 10-9

ROUND TWO: Siver resumes mixing up his strikes and keeping Phan at bay. Phan lands a leg kick but Siver smacks him on the chin. Phan is being busted up. Phan blocks a kick but Siver presses forward. Siver is loose in there, throwing more spinning kicks. Siver takes Phan down. He immediately gets side control. He moves to half guard and proceeds to rough Phan up with elbows and short punches. Phan is taking a lot of unprotected shots. Phan looks exhausted. Siver keeps up the relentless beating. Siver nearly mounts him. Another landslide round for Siver.

SCORECARD: Siver 10-9

ROUND THREE: Siver opens the round with a variety of kicks. Siver ducks under Phan’s counter attack and takes him down again. Siver works from half guard and tries to move into mount. He hops over Phan and gets to mount but Phan is fighting back hard. Siver is back in half guard. Siver is delivering more unprotected shots to his face. Siver almost gets a crucifix. Less than 30 seconds left and Siver is making Phan feel every moment of it. Siver takes it to the judges score cards.

SCORECARD: Siver 10-8

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Dennis Siver by unanimous decision (30-24, 30-25, 30-26.


Lightweight bout: Marcus LeVesseur (155.4) vs. Abel Trujillo (155.4)

ROUND ONE: LeVesseur hits a leg kick and then gets a takedown. Trujillo attempts to escape but LeVesseur stays with him. LeVesseur presses him against the fence. They are exchanging knees in the clinch against the fence before they are stood up by the ref. LeVesseur immediately goes for another takedown. LeVesseur is taking some punishment from Trujillo while attempting to take him down. Trujillo has actually outstruck LeVesseur in this round. The ref breaks them up again. LeVesseur eats a big knee rushing in for a takedown. Trujillo pounds on him to end the round.

SCORECARD: Trujillo 10-9

ROUND TWO: Both men swing and miss. Trujillo catches a kick and knocks LeVesseur down. He somehow gets a North-South choke! LeVesseur is able to get out of it but Trujillo is still all over him. He knocks him down again. Trujillo is in full guard. LeVesseur gives up his back. LeVesseur gets back to his feet but tries for another takedown. Trujillo gives him a vicious knee to the body! LeVesseur is covering up for dear life. The ref has seen enough and stops the fight!

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Abel Trujillo by TKO at 3:56 of round 2.

Catchweight bout (158.8lbs): Daron Cruickshank (155) vs. Henry Martinez (158.8)

ROUND ONE: Martinez rushes forward, takes a kick in the gut but presses Cruickshank against the fence. They stall out and the ref breaks them up. Martinez bull rushes him again. Cruichshank works for a standing kimura. Martinez attempts to trip him. They break apart and have a wild exchange. The clash again after Cruickshank lands a hard uppercut. Cruickshank lands a series of kicks to the body and he’s doubled over, going down fast! WAIT! Martinez comes back and punches his way out of danger! The pace slows as they exchange some half-hearted kicks. BOOM Cruickshank just nails him in the face with a hard kick! Cruickshank pounds on him but Martinez will not give up! Wow, what a round!

SCORECARD: Cruickshank 10-9

ROUND TWO: Martinez catches a kick and drives Cruickshank in the face. Cruickshank momentarily doubles Martinez over with a shot. Martinez is having some difficulty connecting with anything significant in this round. Side kick from Cruickshank. Cruickshank is landing a lot of single kicks and finally BLAMMO! He kicks straight in the head, foot wrapped around the back of skull. Lights out!

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Daron Cruickshank by KO at 2:57 of round 2.

Lightweight bout: Ramsey Nijem (155.4) vs. Joe Proctor (154.6)

ROUND ONE: Nijem comes out swinging! He pushes Proctor against the fence. Proctor holds on to Nijem’s head and forces him back. Nijem breaks off and nails Proctor with a combination of knees and punches. Nijem lands jumping front kick, sending Proctor crashing to his rear. Nijem pounces on him! Nijem takes his back. Proctor defends, reverses and grabs Nijem around the neck again. Nijem escapes and retakes his back. Proctor gets to his feet and Nijem hits him with punches and kick to the head. Proctor counters and crumples Nijem. Proctor has a chance to take this round. He stalls until the buzzer sounds.

SCORECARD: Nijem 10-9

ROUND TWO: Proctor is the aggressor to start off this round. Front kick from Nijem. The fighters clash a few times but neither of them is getting a clear advantage. Nijem has the lead in significant strikes landed. Nijem lands a pair of leg kicks. Proctor lands hard counter right. Nijem goes for a takedown but Proctor actually pulls him down. Nijem flips over into Proctor’s guard. Proctor reverses position and attempts to choke Nijem against the fence. Nijem pulls Proctor’s legs out from under him. Proctor attempts a kimura.

SCORECARD: Proctor 10-9

ROUND THREE: Nijem lands a hard body shot, followed by an overhand right. Nijem takes him down but Proctor goes for an armbar. Proctor switches to a kimura. Nijem defends. Nijem takes his back. Nijem has the lead the ground strikes. Proctor takes his back! Proctor gets a straight arm bar. Nijem gets his arm free and smashes Proctor. Proctor gets to his feet but Nijem swarms on his with rights and lefts until the round ends.

SCORECARD: Nijem 10-9

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Ramsey Nijem by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28X2).

Bantamweight bout: Raphael Assuncao (135) vs. Mike Easton (135)

ROUND ONE: Easton comes forward with a one-two combo and finishes with a spinning kick. Easton slides in and connects with another combo. Leg kick from Easton. Assuncao is evading well but can’t get much offense going. He connects with a left hook. Easton misses a spinning back kick. Easton ducks a kick but can’t take advantage of it. Hard overhand right from Easton. Assuncao tries for a last minute takedown and Easton stuffs it.

SCORECARD: Easton 10-9

ROUND TWO: Easton and Assuncao exchange leg kicks. Easton lands a hook as Assuncao throws a leg kick. Easton appears to have been punched in the eye. This is the first time he’s backed up the entire fight. They have quick exchange of strikes against the fence. Assuncao clinches up and allegedly knees Easton in the junk. And of course Rogan then goes into his bit about Thai cups…sigh. Another exchange of leg kicks. Easton attempts a takedown but it gets stuffed. Easton ducks spinning back fist.

SCORECARD: Assuncao 10-9

ROUND THREE: I apologize, my kid hit a switched that turned off the electricity in my in-laws living room and it took a few minutes for the TV to re-boot. We join the rest of this fight in progress At 1:52 on the clock the fighters are still exchanging strikes. Assuncao shoots for a takedown. Apparently he is 6-6 tonight in takedown attempts. Easton tackles Assuncao but can’t hold him down.

SCORECARD: Assuncao 10-9

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Raphael Assuncao by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27X2) .

Lightweight bout: Yves Edwards (155) vs. Jeremy Stephens (155.8)

ROUND ONE: Stephens looks for the early KO with a big right hand. He tries for a takedown. Stephens continues to the throw that right hand. Edwards lands a sneaky left. Stephens tries a jumping knee but WOW! Edwards just cleaned Stephens clock with a right hook to the chin! Edwards pounces and finishes him off with elbows.

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Yves Edwards by KO at 1:55 of round 1.


Welterweight bout: Matt Brown (170.2) vs. Mike Swick (170)

ROUND ONE: After lots of feints, Brown comes forward and throws a right. Swick is a bit tentative to start off. Brown gets a takedown. Brown attempts a D’arce choke. Swick is trying to stay composed and defend the choke. Brown gives it up. Swick works from guard now. Brown fights for a triangle and he gets it. Swick for his part is defending with his legs. Swick gets out and goes for an arm-in guillotine. Brown stands up. Brown hits Swick with a knee and we’re done.

SCORECARD: Brown 10-9

ROUND TWO: Brown throws a head kick. Brown comes forward and elbows Swick in the mush. Swick presses Brown against the fence. Brown has outlanded Swick so far. Brown counters Swick and knocks him out cold left hook-straight right combo! And so goes the Swick comeback train…right in the ditch.

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Matt Brown by KO at 2:31 of round 2.

Welterweight bout: Rory MacDonald (170.2) vs. B.J. Penn (168.2)

ROUND ONE: BJ Penn comes running across the cage, takes a knee to the chest and grabs for a single leg. They separate and MacDonald spins him around in to the cage. Penn lands a knee. MacDonald counters with a leg kick. Another leg kick from MacDonald. MacDonald is attacking the lead leg of Penn. Penn hits a straight right. Penn plants one on the chin and shoots for a single. MacDonald smacks Penn with an elbow. Left hook to the body of Penn. MacDonald tries for a single leg. Front kick from Mac Donald. Another elbow from MacDonald staggers Penn. He’s picking him apart with a variety of punches and kicks.

SCORECARD: MacDonald 10-9

ROUND TWO: MacDonald is effectively using his jab to limit Penn’s offense. Left hook to the body again and he follows with another one-two. MacDonald is slowly breaking Penn down. He’s landed more significant strikes, 49-16 to be exact. Penn lands a right hand. Front kick from MacDonald. MacDonald doubles Penn over with a kick to the chest. He does it again! Penn looks like he just wants get out of that cage ASAP. MacDonald does a little shuffle in the center of the cage. MacDonald punctuates the round with a takedown.

SCORECARD: MacDonald 10-8

ROUND THREE: Penn wants to prove he’s not out of this yet and comes running across the cage to grab a takedown. MacDonald gets to his feet and presses Penn against the fence. MacDonald falls over throwing a spinning back kick. They clinch again. MacDonald lands a double jab-straight combo. More shuffling and taunting from MacDonald #norespect. They clinch against the fence and are broken up. Left hook from MacDonald again. Less than 10 seconds and Penn has got nothing left for MacDonald.

SCORECARD: MacDonald 10-9

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Rory MacDonald by unanimous decision (30-26X2, 30-27).

Light Heavyweight bout: Alexander Gustafsson (205.4) vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (205)

ROUND ONE: Gustafsson is the first to throw. Rua content to evade. Gustafsson blasts Rua but he counters with a leg lock! Gustafsson is in trouble! He pulls free but Rua stays with him. He takes a knee to the belly before breaking free. Gustafsson gets a takedown but stands back up. Rua nails Gustafsson and pounces on him. Gustafsson gets back to his feet. Rua hangs on to his waist. Gustafsson knees his way free. Front kick to the belly from the Swede. Rua errantly hits Gustafsson in the back of the head. They clinch again before ending the round. Tough one to score folks.

SCORECARD: Gustafsson 10-9

ROUND TWO: Gustafsson come out swinging. Rua lands a hard counterstrike. Rua having some success with the overhand right. Gustafsson clinches with Rua against the fence. They are broken up. Rua swarms on Gustafsson. Gustafsson evades Rua. Rua tries a takedown but ends up with Gustafsson on top of him. They get back on their feet. Rua lands 2 hard shots! Gustafsson ducks a right hand and takes him down. They stand and clinch against the fence. Gustafsson bullies him down again. Two knees to the face from Gustafsson before he breaks away from a countering Rua. Uppercut from Gustafsson. Rua covers up and circles away to end the round.

SCORECARD: Gustafsson 10-9

ROUND THREE: Gustafsson comes forward. Rua lands a right. Gustafsson throws Rua to the mat. He takes his back Rua counters with a knee bar. Gustafsson defends and smacks him in the face. They get back to their feet. Lots of haymakers being thrown but not much is connecting either way. Gustafsson takes Rua down again. Shot to the body of Rua. Gustafsson nails him with a right. Gustafsson is looking to methodically pick Rua apart rather than blitz him and make an error. They clinch against the cage and are broken up for stalling. Gustafsson attacks the body and hits a front kick to the face. Gustafsson gets one last takedown.

SCORECARD: Gustafsson 10-9

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER – Alexander Gustafsson by unanimous decision (30-27X2, 30-26).

30-26?! Ouch number 2.


Lightweight Title bout: Champ Benson Henderson (154.6) vs. Nate Diaz (155)

ROUND ONE: Leg kick from Henderson. He misses with the next one and Diaz ties him up. They clinch against the fence. Henderson turns him around. They exchange knees and short punches. Diaz turns him back around. They are rolling along the fence. Diaz is presently outstriking the champ. Diaz lands an elbow on the break. Henderson shoots and puts Diaz on his back. Henderson stands in his guard. Henderson strikes with hammer fists. Diaz gets back to his feet. Front kick from Diaz. Henderson takes out Diaz’ legs. He tries a second time but Diaz stays up. Jab from Diaz. One-two from Henderson. Diaz pushes him against the fence.

SCORECARD: Henderson 10-9

ROUND TWO: They tie right up again and Henderson drags Diaz down. Henderson nails a head kick and then a knee to the body. Henderson knees Diaz in the the thigh. Vicious elbow over the top from the champ. They clash, exchanging strikes. Leg kick from Henderson. Diaz misses a high kick. Henderson jabs in the thigh and then blasts him in the face! Henderson is all over Diaz! Henderson keeps him pressed against the fence. Henderson smacks him and goes back to pressing him. Diaz judo throws Henderson but can’t keep him down. Diaz looks frustrated that Henderson won’t stand still and let him hit him…which is the Diaz way.

SCORECARD: Henderson 10-9

ROUND THREE: More leg kicks from the champ. Diaz is favoring his lead leg due to the damage he’s taken. Henderson takes him down again. Diaz attacks his leg. Henderson pounds on him. There’s a bit of a scramble but Henderson lands in his guard. Diaz kicks at Henderson’s legs. Henderson goes chest to chest with him but Diaz goes back to attacking his leg and tries for a submission. Henderson escapes! Henderson takes his back but Diaz defends. Diaz wraps up his leg again. Henderson gets free and stands up. Henderson clobbers Diaz! Henderson pounces on him again! Diaz is trying with all of his might to grab for a leg and tear it off but Henderson keeps defending and pulling away.

SCORECARD: Henderson 10-9

ROUND FOUR: They clinch in the center but Henderson is able to trip him and take him down. Knees to the body from the champ. Henderson bullies him down. Diaz gives up his back. Henderson takes him down again. Diaz stands up but Henderson drags him down. Diaz traps the arm and tries for another submission. Henderson pulls away and pounds on him. Henderson stands up in the guard. He punches his legs. Diaz kicks him in the chest. One more leg kick and the buzzer sounds.

SCORECARD: Henderson 10-5

ROUND FIVE: They clash in the center of the cage and clinch against the fence. Henderson works for the takedown. Big slam from Henderson! Henderson stands over Diaz and rains down elbows. Diaz stands up but Henderson is all over him like a cheap suit. Henderson tenderizes Diaz’ body. Diaz gets a takedown but Henderson dumps him off. Henderson nails another head kick! Henderson pummels him some more and proceeds to circle away, running out the clock.

SCORECARD: Henderson 10-9

OFFICIAL RESULT: WINNER AND STILL CHAMPION – Ben Henderson by unanimous decision (50-45X2, 50-43).

Good card tonight with a fun night of fights. It was a perfectly serviceable free card and I’m looking forward to more like this in 2013.
