Alexander Gustafsson Does Not Want to Wait For Title Shot, Could Potentially Replace Dan Henderson Against Lyoto Machida
During last night’s post-fight press conference for UFC on Fox 5, Alexander Gustafsson revealed that he didn’t want to wait until July or later for a title shot against the winner of the Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen light heavyweight title fight and he wanted to fight again sooner. Even more so on the UFC on Fox 5 Post-Fight Show on Fuel TV, Dana White said that Gustafsson in that case could potentially take Dan Henderson’s spot against Lyoto Machida at UFC 157.
During the post-fight show, Dana White stated in an interview regarding Gustafsson, “If I was him, I’d want to get another fight in before taking on Jon Jones. He could fight again. I’m hearing Dan Henderson’s knee isn’t better, so maybe Gustafsson should fight Machida next.” So if Dan Henderson is still injured, Gustafsson might be asked to take Henderson’s place in February.
Gustafsson during the post-fight press conference said he wanted to stay active. He said: “I want to stay active, and I want to fight. I’ll fight whenever. I was away for a long time. The last time I fought was in April, and that was too long. To wait till summer again, that would be too long. I want to fight for the belt, and if they give me one before that, it doesn’t matter. I’ll fight whoever the UFC gives me.” He also also added, “All I can say is, I’m a ready for a title shot – whoever has the belt. When I get a chance to fight for the title, I’ll be more than ready for it.”
