August MMA Q&A: Ronda Rousey, CM Punk, Condit/Lawler

August 14, 2015 | Posted by Jeremy Lambert

Usually I run these Q&A columns the week before a UFC PPV, but since the UFC decided to hold their PPV on August 1st, I missed out on previewing the card. Had I previewed the card, I would’ve said the following: “Rousey will win in 30 seconds, I don’t know who these TUF guys are, and the Nogueira Brothers and Shogun should stop fighting.”

I’ll now take questions.

Is there anyone who can challenge Ronda Rousey at 135?

No, not at 135. The only person who can challenge Rousey is Cris “Cyborg” but that fight will never happen because even though Dana says it will do 2.5 million buys, he won’t make the fight unless “Cyborg” can make 135.

Why would he throw away a 2.5 million buy PPV over 10 pounds or less?

Because Rousey is the champion and her title, like all UFC titles, is super important. As the champion, Rousey doesn’t have to move up in weight, “Cyborg” has to move down. Just like everyone wanted Anderson Silva to move down to 170 to fight Georges St. Pierre and how they wanted Jon Jones to move down to 185 to fight Anderson. Oh wait.

Weren’t those potential Champion vs. Champion fights?

Yes, just like Rousey vs. “Cyborg” would be a Champion vs. Champion fight if UFC just merged with Invicta, a company they own, and awarded her the UFC Women’s Featherweight title, the same way they awarded Rousey the UFC Women’s Batamweight title when they merged with Strikeforce.

There’s no reason why “Cyborg” and Rousey can’t meet in the middle at 140. If the fight is truly a two million buy PPV (it isn’t, but it’s definitely over a million) then Dana White should be fired for incompetence if he can’t make the fight happen.

So do you think the fight will happen?

No. UFC has a rich history of not making superfights happen and until they actually deliver on one of them, I see no reason to believe that they can actually put the fight together.

Is Joe Rogan a pussy or a real man for crying while interviewing Ronda Rousey?

Fear of looking like a pussy was never a factor for Mr. Rogan.

Is Mauricio Rua back?

I said I’ll take no questions about the light heavyweight division until Jon Jones returns.

Is Rodrigo Nogueira done?

He was done after the second Frank Mir loss. Everything since has just been further contributing to brain damage. I know that Dana says he wants him to retire and Nogueira sounds like he’s ready to retire, but in six months I’m sure he’ll start feeling good and he’ll want one more fight against someone like Mirko “Cro Cop” and Dana will make it happen because the promoter is not your friend.

Have you ordered your Reebok fight kit yet?

No. I have been begging Reebok to make a Chuck Liddell fight kit for me to purchase, but they have yet to reply. I guess they don’t want my $95.

Why do people keep fighting Rousimar Palhares?

Because they want a story to tell their grandkids.

Do you think WSOF was right for stripping him of his title?

No. If Jake Shields’ arm was really hurt from Palhares holding the submission too long then he wouldn’t have been able to punch him with that same arm after the fight was over. And I believe Palhares when he says that Shields was greased up. This man knows when other fighters are greasing. It’s one of his many powers.

Why are fighters still leaving it in the hands of the judges?

I’m not sure. It seems pretty easy to just finish a trained professional, but I guess it’s harder than it looks. Maybe all fights should be to the death, Georges, and I’m not joking. That way the judges are completely taken out of the equation.

Are there any good fights left in August?

Max Holloway vs. Charles Oliveira is a good fight and it’s five rounds. They are both young and on a roll right now. It should be an outstanding fight and it’s a shame no one will see it.

How come Carlos Condit is getting a title shot over Johny Hendricks and Tyron Woodley?

Because VIOLENCE!

Hendricks and Lawler have fought twice, and while I’ve never seen either fight, I heard they were pretty good. But Hendricks has no personality. Woodley is a boring fighter with no personality so I don’t know why anyone wants to see him fight for the title.

Georges St. Pierre was a boring fighter.

But he was Canadian and talked with a funny accent so we all loved him. We’re very accepting of Canadian stars in MMA, we’re less accepting of black stars. I’m not saying MMA fans are racists, but the majority of them are white juiceheads.

Anyway, Condit has a decent personality, but more importantly, he brings THE VIOLENCE. You know who else brings THE VIOLENCE?

Robbie Lawler?

ROBBIE LAWLER. Lawler vs. Condit has the potential to be the most violent fight in MMA history. Did you see what each man did to the nose of their opponents in their last fight? Lawler saw what Condit did to Thiago Alves’ nose and was like, “that’s cool, but watch what I do to Rory’s” and then he went out and re-arranged Rory’s nose so bad that even Rich Franklin’s nose was like, “damn.”

Besides UFC 189, what else happened in July that I should care about?

Michael Bisping picked up a win to move one step closer to a title eliminator fight, which he’ll no doubt lose, TJ Dillashaw remained the champion at 135 and continues to look awesome, Stephen Thompson threw a cool kick, and Todd Dufee threw the worst punch ever before getting knocked out by Frank Mir.

Frank Mir still fights?

Not only does he still fight, but he’s won two straight fights by KO and is in the conversation for greatest heavyweight of all-time.

What does that mean?

It means if we started a conversation about who the greatest heavyweight of all-time is, after awhile, we’d probably name Frank Mir. It’s like Dana saying that a fighter is “in the mix” for a title shot.

When is CM Punk going to fight?

Never.

WHAAAAAAAAAAT?

I’m convinced that he’s never going to fight. He said it himself, he made more money on his WWE per diems than most of the UFC roster. Even though he’ll be one of the higher paid fighters based on name alone, he’s not in the sport for the money. He’s there because he says that he loves the sport, but I bet he doesn’t love getting his ass kicked everyday in the gym. It’s a humbling experience, and, have you ever seen a humbled CM Punk? The guy has a huge ego, which is fine because any great in any sport has a huge ego, but I don’t think he can handle his ego being bruised.

Right now, Punk is just your typical keyboard warrior who tranes UFC.

I’ll take one more question.

When is Samer Kadi coming back?

When the UFC stops fixing fights.
