BJ Penn Says Rory Macdonald Got Him Motivated to Get in Shape For Their Fight

November 28, 2012 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

BJ Penn recently spoke with MMAjunkie about his upcoming fight with Rory Macdonald at UFC on FOX 5 and more. Check out the highlights:

On Macdonald’s disparaging tweets about Penn’s physique: “That really lit a fire under my butt…We took my belly off. I think the best thing for me was the fight getting postponed.”

On being pushed by Macdonald’s rising reputation: “I realized I can’t do this forever, so I might as well make the most of it. Everybody says he’s going to be a champion soon, so ending up fighting somebody like Rory, it wasn’t a tough decision.”

On his fighting spirit: “Fighting is still not a sport for me. I don’t know if I should be saying that on a conference call. Fighting is still a fight for me. It always has been. I’m not a great athlete that can play any sport. But one thing I could always do is … fight back. This is a fight. This isn’t putting a ball in a hole. This has always been a fight for me, and I just love it when it’s that way. I love it when my opponent says that: He’s fat, I’ll end up killing him, he’s nothing, this and that. It’s all wonderful. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
