Cain Velasquez Picks Alistair Overeem To Win Tonight At UFC 156

February 2, 2013 | Posted by Joseph Lee

In an interview with MMA Junkie, UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (11-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC), who beat Junior Dos Santos at UFC 155 in December, has picked Alistair Overeem (36-11 MMA, 1-0 UFC) to defeat Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (17-4 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC 156.

To face Dos Santos, Velasquez had to defeat Silva at UFC 146 in May, which he did with a first-round TKO. If Overeem beats Silva tonight, he’ll get a shot at the champ. If Silva wins, it might be a different story since Velasquez beat in in their last encounter.

On Overeem winning: “I think he’ll win. I think Bigfoot’s a tough dude, also, but Overeem definitely has a great chance. He’s been one of the top guys in this sport forever now. He’s a big, strong guy with a lot of power. He definitely has a good chance.”

On if he can’t win: “I don’t know (what happens if he doesn’t win). Maybe (Nelson or Struve). We’ll see what the UFC decides and see what happens with this fight. I really haven’t thought about who it will be if Overeem doesn’t win. The UFC hasn’t said anything, either. But he’s definitely one of the best.”

On winning the belt back: “It felt good, not just to beat him (but to avenge a loss). At that time, Junior seemed unbeatable – takedown defense, his standup and boxing. All that stuff. It was definitely rewarding. It was great.”
