Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC 213. I’m Robert Winfree, here for the second consecutive night, providing you with updates on all of the action just as I see it. Well we got hit with some really bad news at around 3:30 pm eastern time, women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes fell seriously ill over the last week and wound up in the hospital today and is unable to compete. So the fight between Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko is off, which really sucks. Of course the original main event was to be bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt taking on TJ Dillashaw, which Garbrandt was never really down for given a back injury and those two are hopefully going to fight a little later this year. That’s also on the heels of losing Donald Cerrone vs. Robbie Lawler about a week ago, and it says something that despite those this card is still pretty good. The new main event crowns, in my eyes, the best middleweight in the world as Yoel Romero takes on Robert Whittaker with an interim belt on the line. Also heavyweights will be fighting, Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum meet in a rubber match as they jockey for a possible title shot, also in a really compelling lightweight bout Jim Miller meets former champion Anthony Pettis. This event comes to the world from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA with Jon Anik, Brian Stann, and Joe Rogan on commentary.

And in your regularly scheduled programming note, Nevada has not adopted the changes to the unified rules of MMA (which incidentally need a new name now that they’re no longer unified) so anything other than the soles of your feet touching the mat makes you a grounded opponent and the language around scoring isn’t as clarified as the new criteria.

Trevin Giles is making his UFC debut here, he’s undefeated and had very successful runs through Legacy FC and RFA. Giles is trying to remain perfect and announce himself as a fighter of note in the still rebuilding light heavyweight division. James Bochnovic brings an eight fight winning streak into his UFC debut, he’s also looking to make a big first impression on the UFC audience. The odds favor the unbeaten Giles at -280 against +220 on Bochnovic.

Light Heavyweight Bout: James Bochnovic (8-1, 201 lbs.) vs. Trevin Giles (9-0, 204 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Bochnovic is four inches taller and has a whopping seven inches of reach on Giles. Touch of gloves to get us going. Bochnovic showing the jab, Giles lands a leg kick. Giles circling around the edge of the cage, Bochnovic lands a leg kick. Bochnovic lands a left body kick. Leg kick from Bochnovic then another left body kick. They clinch up and Giles lands a knee that might have hit the groin but Bochnovic waves it off. Giles spins Bochnovic and hits a double leg into the guard of Bochnovic. They trade some punches without much on them, Giles land a right while posturing through a triangle attempt. Giles passes to side control and lands a couple of knees to the body. Bochnovic trying to bridge off of the cage but Giles pulls him away from it. Bochnovic rolls to his knees, Giles into the ride position. Giles lands a couple of punches while moving towards the back. Giles lands some good blows, Bochnovic up but Giles pulls him down easily and is back in side control. Giles grinding an elbow into the face. Bochnovic bridges and is back up but Giles hits a German supelx and lands a couple of rights. Giles into half guard, he’s riding well, and lands an elbow before Bochnovic gets full guard. Giles stands and falls with a couple of elbows before the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Giles, borderline 10-8

ROUND TWO: Touch of gloves for the second round. Giles lands a bit of a right. Bochnovic circling but he’s visibly slower and has some swelling on his right cheek. Giles lands a bit of a left hook then a jab. Giles lands a left to the body. Bochnovic tries and fails on a double leg and Giles gets the ride position. Giles pulls Bochnovic over, he’s going for a north-south choke but Bochnovic is hand fighting to keep the grip from becoming a thing. Giles bails on that and lands an elbow and moves towards mount. Bochnovic rolls to his belly, Giles riding and punching from the ride position. Giles lands some elbows to the body, Bochnovic scrambles up but grabs at a guillotine as Giles takes him down again. Giles passes to mount, gets the back and lands a right. Giles has Bochnovic is flattened out, he’s rolling back and forth but he’s getting pounded on, he actually goes out from a couple of lefts to end this one.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Trevin Giles via KO, punches, at 3:54 of Round 2

Solid debut from Giles, who normally fights down at middleweight. Bochnovic is still down as they read the time on that finish. Giles on the mic now. He says the win feels great and he’s happy to be here and enjoy Vegas. He knew Bochnovic was fading in the second and he knew he’d slow him down and get the win.

Here’s the finish, just clinical stuff from dominant position. His riding was impressive as well, though that’s left out of this clip. Also Bochnovic conscious as the doctors wheel him out so good to see that.

Cody Stamann brings a seven fight winning streak into his UFC debut here, he’s trying to enter his name among those up and coming prospects. Terrion Ware is also making his UFC debut on the back of a three fight winning streak and looking to make a good first impression. Of note, both men are normally bantamweights but took this fight on somewhat short notice. Stamann is the favorite here at -275 against Ware’s +215

Featherweight Bout: Cody Stamann (14-1, 145 lbs.) vs. Terrion Ware (17-4, 145 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Ware has two inches of height and a significant six and a half inches of reach on Stamann. Stamann double jabs then lands a bit of a right. Ware lands an inside leg kick. Ware lands a leg kick. Stamann lands a short left hook then they trade in close. Stamann lands a leg kick but eats a left. Ware lands a low leg kick, and also lands a long right. Stamann hits a double leg into the guard of Ware. Ware able to kick him off and stand up. Ware has an elbow strike mostly blocked. Ware lands a couple of punches, eats a bit of a knee though and they clinch. They trade knees, Ware lands one low and we’ve got time for him to recover. Replay shows a glancing shot, Stamann walks it off quickly. They reset at distance and Ware slips a right. Stamann lands a bit of a left hook, Ware backs him all the way into the fence. Ware lands a jab then a right and avoids a single leg. Ware is really finding a rhythm here, lands a leg kick as well. Stamann lands a leg kick. Ware lands a right to the body. Stamann hits a double leg into the guard of Ware. Ware fighting for wrist control. Ware tries to kick Stamann off, Stamann is able to get back on top though. Stamann passes to half guard. Ware to full guard, tries to stand again but Stamann keeps him down. Stamann lands a few punches while standing over Ware to close the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Stamann but there’s a case for Ware

ROUND TWO: They touch gloves for the second round. Stamann eats a left hook. They trade leg kicks. Stamann lands a knee, he’s timing a knee to the head well when Ware dips his head. Ware lands a combination. Stamann baits another right and ducks under to hit a double leg into the guard of Ware. Stamann lands a left, Ware kicks him off and rolls to his knees, Stamann into the ride position as Ware stands. They trade body shots in a clinch, Ware lands a couple more to the head and they break. They clinch again and trade then break, these two aren’t playing around so far. Ware lands a right. Ware blocks a head kick. They trade a few jabs, Stamann lands a bit of a right. Ware lands a right to the body, then one to the head. Ware starting to push Stamann into the fence, lands a leg kick but Stamann returns it. Stamann hits a double leg again into the guard of Ware. Ware back up, Stamann lands a bit of a left as they do. Stamann tires a single leg, Ware blocks it and lands a couple of rights. Ware lands a right to the body but Stamann hits another double leg, this time he lands in half guard. Stamann lands a few punches and hammer fists as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Stamann, 20-18 Stamann overall

ROUND THREE: They touch gloves again. Stamann lands a double left. Ware trying to back Stamann into the fence. Ware lands a bit of a right. Stamann lands a leg kick. Stamann lands a front kick to the face, Ware lands a right. Ware catches a body kick and lands a bit of a right. Stamann lands a left hook to the body then one to the head. Stamann blocks a head kick. Ware lands a right to the body. Ware is starting to tee off a bit here. Stamann gets hit a few times then lands a double leg into half guard. Stamann lands a couple of short blows, Ware moves to the fence and wall walks but Stamann has a rear waist lock and pulls him back landing in side control. Stamann moves into full mount. Ware gives up his back, well at least a hip, and Stamann is landing some blows. Ware gets back to half guard but he’s struggling to get up. Stamann lands a series of punches, Ware back up but Stamann holding a waist lock. Ware breaks the grip, they trade wildly for a bit then Stamann hits a double leg and swings wild from top position as time expires.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Stamann, 30-27 Stamann overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Cody Stamann via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27 x2)

Not bad from both guys considering short notice. Stamann gets an interview, he knew he’d get here eventually and should have been here sooner and calls himself one of the best bantamweights in the world. He puts over Ware as a long guy with good punching but he knew he could bait him forward and wrestle him down.

Jordan Mein returned from a brief retirement in December of last year in a losing effort, he’s on a two fight losing streak overall and is pretty desperate need of a win to assert that he’s still a fighter worth keeping around. Belal Muhammad has gone 2-2 in the UFC and is coming off of a win, he’s looking for his first UFC winning streak and to find a degree of consistency that he’s been lacking to this point. Muhammad is a slight -140 favorite against +110 on Mein.

Welterweight Bout: Jordan Mein (29-11, 170 lbs.) vs. Belal Muhammad (11-2, 170 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Mein is an inch taller and has an inch of reach on Muhammad. Touch of gloves to get us going. Some range finding kicks from each man early. Muhammad tries a double leg, Mein is able to block it. Mein lands a couple of leg kicks. Muhammad lands a right. They clinch up, Mein trips him down but Muhammad scrambles up before he gets on top. Mein lands a leg kick. Muhammad lands a body kick, Mein lands another couple of leg kicks. Mein with another leg kick, Muhammad lands a bit of a left. Mein lands to the leg again. Muhammad tries another double leg, can’t finish it but lands a bit of a left high kick as they separate. Both guys still struggling with range a bit, Mein sniping at the lead leg with near impunity. Muhammad gets the clinch, gets the back standing and pushes Mein into the fence. Muhammad lands a couple of short lefts and knees to the body and thigh. Muhammad lands a couple of short elbows as the round closes.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Mein

ROUND TWO: Mein is bleeding around the inside corner of his left eyebrow from those elbows. They trade some leg kicks, commentary is astonished by the lack of attention paid to that cut. Mein lands a leg kick, Muhammad follows it back with some punches. Muhammad dives on a double leg to get the clinch and has Mein on the cage again. Muhammad lands a few short elbows. Muhammad elevates and slams but has no control so Mein escapes and we’re upright again. Mein lands a leg kick. Mein lands a bit of a right after slipping a jab. Muhammad lands a body kick. Mein lands a left to the body. Another couple of leg kicks from Mein land. Muhammad lands a right to the body, he’s trying to turn up the pressure here. Mein with another few leg kicks. Mein tries a double leg, can’t finish it and they break. Muhammad working the lead hand now, and bull rushes into another clinch. Muhammad with some knees to the thigh and body. Muhammad tries a takedown, is able to dump Mein and get on top for a bit. Mein had double butterfly guard, Muhammad passes to half guard and lands some short blows. Muhammad tries for mount, can’t get it and lands another couple of short punches and elbows to close the round.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Muhammad, 19-19 overall

ROUND THREE: They both miss lefts to start the final round. Muhammad pushes for a double leg, Mein hits a switch but can’t get out of the clinch and Muhammad drives him back into the cage. Muhammad with some more knees to the thigh, Mein lands a couple to the body. Muhammad slips to the back with a waist lock. Mein grabs a double wrist lock, rolls through and nearly gets on top but Muhammad scrambles up and drives him back to the mat with a double leg. Muhammad to the ride position, he’s after the back and has both hooks in now. Muhammad to a body triangle, he’s trying to set up a choke now. Muhammad can’t get under the chin, he’s landing a few short blows to try and open up the choke. Muhammad lands some rights to the body. Mein to his knees, Muhammad still holding the back. Muhammad loses the body triangle but is holding a waist lock as he pushes Mein into the cage again. Muhammad lands a couple of knees towards the head. Mein able to get another double wrist lock, they roll through and Mein hits a single leg into a sitting position against the cage. Muhammad back up and time runs down in the clinch.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Muhammad, 29-28 Muhammad overall

Well that was, well it was there. Muhammad does not get an interview.

Thiago Santos just snapped a two fight losing streak, he’s trying to get another winning streak going and possibly return to the top fifteen rankings. Gerald Meerschaert is on a seven fight winning streak as well as being 2-0 in the UFC, a win here would be the biggest of his career and could see him move towards a top ranking as well. Santos has an edge in the odds to the tune of -170 while Meerschaert pays at +140.

Middleweight Bout: Gerald Meerschaert (26-8, 184.5 lbs.) vs. Thiago “Marreta” Santos (14-5, 186 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Meerschaert is an inch taller and has an inch and a half of reach on Santos as well. Meerschaert fighting southpaw. Santos will switch to southpaw occasionally to set up a high kick. Meerschaert lands a bit of a left, he’s lunging to close distance though. Santos lands a leg kick but Meerschaert gets close and hits a double leg. Santos kicks him off and eats a left as they separate. Meerschaert gets the clinch again and has Santos on the fence. Meerschaert trips Santos down, lands some lefts as he regains his feet and keeps Santos on the fence. Meerschaert lands an elbow and drops for a double leg, switches to a single but can’t control Santos. Santos sprawls free and stands then lands some hard punches that drop Meerschaert. Santos on top now, Meerschaert trying to get some control over Santos. Santos stands free and makes Meerschaert stand as well. We get an eye poke to Meerschaert and he’s got time to recover. Santos is bleeding from the forehead, and the replay confirms the eye poke. The doctor is in to check the eye, he’s got no problem with it continuing. That cut on Santos is pretty long, it’s around the temple so unlikely to stop things but that’ll need stitches afterwards. We’re back to fighting, Meerschaert lands a bit of a left. Santos lands a left then a knee to the body and a leg kick. Meerschaert grabs a kick, tries to pull guard but can’t secure it before Santos escapes to his feet. Santos has a head kick blocked. Santos lands a bit of a left. Meerschaert lands a bit of a left, Santos pushes at him but misses. They trade lefts in close, Santos lands a body kick. Meerschaert walking Santos down now. Santos misses a right, Meerschaert gets a waist lock but can’t finish a takedown before the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Santos

ROUND TWO: Meerschaert tries a double leg quickly, he can’t secure it but lands a left and avoids a high kick as Santos regains his feet. Meerschaert tries a low single leg, Santos avoids it and lands a series of punches. Santos into the ride position and lands some rights before Meerschaert rolls to half guard. Santos after an arm triangle, he gets to the ride position as Meerschaert rolls to his knees. Santos keeps landing some punches, Meerschaert regains his feet finally but eats a knee to the body. Santos sprawls easily and lands a heavy left on the mat. Meerschaert is moving just enough to keep this thing alive, he finally stops and Santos lands enough hammer fists to prompt the stoppage.

Santos looked pretty good there, and gets an interview now. He says there’s no mystery about his game, he’s a striker but he’s been working hard to round out his game. Asked who he’d like next he tries broken English to call out Gegard Mousasi for a rematch. Rogan asks what would be different in a rematch, he says he just needs a good camp for it as he took the fight on short notice the first time. He closes by thanking his coaches, the UFC, and the fans.

A couple of quick highlights, once Santos could reliably stop the takedown he just abused Meerschaert.

Chad Laprise (11-2) took this fight on somewhat short notice, he’s gone 4-2 in the UFC and is coming off of a win after hitting a two fight skid. Laprise is trying to keep that positive momentum going here and make a move back towards a higher level of competition. Brian Camozzi (7-3) lost his UFC debut and is trying to get the all important first UFC win under his belt here. Laprise is a massive favorite, one of the biggest on the card, -800 while Camozzi’s +500 payout has to be tempting to those degenerate gamblers out there.

ROUND ONE: Camozzi is four inches taller and has a whopping seven inches of reach on Laprise. Some feinting early from both men. Camozzi misses a high kick, Laprise lands an inside leg kick. Camozzi lands a leg kick. Another leg kick from Camozzi. Lparise jabs the body then lands a right. They’re both just missing but as soon as one of them dials in this could be over. Both men are throwing with some bad intentions. Camozzi lands a body kick. Laprise dancing on the outside, Camozzi lands a leg kick but Laprise lands a left hook counter. Laprise lands a leg kick. Larpise lands a bit of a one two, still figuring out the range though. They trade a bit in close, Laprise has a notable edge in hand speed. Laprise jabbing the body now to set up some other offense. Laprise lands a solid leg kick. Overhand right lands for Laprise. Camozzi trying to press forward but he’s following more than cutting off Laprise. Camozzi lands a leg kick and a bit of a right. Laprise lands a bit of a right, then they trade leg kicks. Laprise misses a few punches but lands a spinning back kick to the body. Camozzi lands a leg kick but Laprise catches it and takes him down. Camozzi has full guard, Laprise can’t get any offense off before the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Laprise

ROUND TWO: Camozzi showing the jab here, Laprise lands a bit of a left high kick. Camozzi lands a leg kick then eats a straight right to the body. They trade some rights, Laprise lands a right to the body. Camozzi is showing a standing knee towards the head, given the height difference it’s a real threat. Laprise lands a bit of a right after taking a body kick. Camozzi is pressuring forward but Laprise has a decent read on him and is moving and countering well enough. Camozzi lands a couple of rights. Camozzi’s general out put is starting to wear on Laprise a bit, he’s also cage cutting more this round. Laprise lands a bit of a left but eats a body kick. Camozzi lands another body kick. Camozzi lands a bit of a leg kick, Laprise has just stopped really countering at this point. Laprise tries to come forward, misses a right then a spinning back fist. Laprise lands a leg kick and they both miss a few punches as time runs down.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Camozzi, 19-19 overall

ROUND THREE: Both men come out jabbing, Camozzi lands a bit of a right. Camozzi lands a leg kick. Laprise checks a leg kick. Laprise lands a right to the body then a leg kick. Laprise lands a right to the body that hurts Camozzi. Laprise lands a series of body shots, Camozzi crumples against the fence, Laprise keeps swarming him and the ref has to save Camozzi.

The Final Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Laprise for his work this evening. Laprise on the mic now. He says he was working on body shots all camp given how long Camozzi is in the torso. He says he feels better at welterweight than he did at lightweight. He wants to fight Mickey Gall in Edmonton later this year, says Gall has never faced a real opponent in his whole life then thanks the crowd.

Lovely timing on the open torso of Camozzi as well as punch location, Laprise then swarms him for the finish with more body shots. Really good finish from Laprise here.

Travis Browne (18-6-1) is in a really bad spot, he’s just 2-5 in his last seven fights and is currently on a three fight losing streak. Despite that Browne retains a top ten ranking (heavyweight, am I right) but he has to win here as a four fight losing streak could end not only his time as a top heavyweight but his time in the UFC as well. Aleksei Oleinik (51-10-1) has gone 3-1 in the UFC and is on a really good overall run of 12-1 over his last thirteen fights, he’s coming off of the first Ezekiel choke finish in UFC history. A win here would be the biggest win of Oleinik’s career and could move him into the top ten of the division. Despite his recent skid Browne is the favorite here at -250 while Oleinik’s comeback stands at +195.

Heavyweight Bout: #9 Travis Browne (247.5 lbs.) vs. #14 Aleksei Oleinik (241.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Browne is four and a half inches taller but Oleinik has an inch of reach on him. Touch of gloves, Browne opens southpaw and lands a body kick. Browne switching his stance frequently at this point, he’s circling while Oleinik tries to corner him. Oleinik lands a bit of a right. Oleinik lands another right. Browne with a lot of kicks early, he lands a knee to the body. Browne lands a leg kick. Oleinik pushes into the clinch and gets Browne on the fence. Browne lands a knee to the head, Oleinik lands a few punches to the body before they break. Browne wobbles Oleinik with a left hook, they trade and Oleinik slips to his back and Browne follows him down. Oleinik back up, still wobbled though. Oleinik lands a bit of a right. Browne circling here, Oleinik drops Browne with a right. Browne back up and they’re clinched , Oleinik pulls him down, Browne back up and Oleinik lands rights to the body from the clinch. They jockey for position a bit, Oleinik lands another right as they break then some heavy rights to the body before Browne gets a clinch. Browne pushes free and circles away. Oleinik catches a knee and takes Browne down. Oleinik into side control quickly and is trying to set up the scarf lock. Browne moves to his knees and Oleinik has his back now. Oleinik flattens him out and looks for the choke. Oleinik across the face just cranking as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Oleinik

ROUND TWO: Oleinik lands a jab to the body then a right. Oleinik back to pushing forward and throwing punches. Browne circling, trying to keep his back off of the fence. They clinch, Oleinik lands some rights to the body before they break. They clinch and trade body shots then break. Browne lands a bit of a head kick. Oleinik lands a couple of hooks and drives Browne into the fence. They trade more body shots, Browne with knees and Oleinik with punches. Oleinik lands a right to the head, Browne spins him and gets a body lock takedown, Oleinik nearly reverses him but Browne keeps top position. Oleinik has guard and is landing punches. Oleinik tries for a triangle, bad decision and Browne moves to side control. Oleinik back to his knees, holds a single leg, spins to the back and drags Browne down. Oleinik has the ride position, now the back and lands some punches to try and set up the choke. Oleinik across the face again, he’s content to just squeeze the face here. Oleinik keeps squeezing, he adjust his angle a little and the compression gets to Browne who taps.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Aleksei Oleinik via Submission, rear naked choke, at 3:44 of Round 2

Big win for Oleinik there, he gets an interview now. He says the fight was difficult because he’s a grappler not a puncher, he tries some English which is appreciated though the translator seems off put. He says he doesn’t feel like a good puncher but he has a good punch, he dedicates the win to his wife who’s his all. He thanks American Top Team, thanks some family for coming out, says he loves MMA fans. Asked about Browne’s decision to take him down he says he was hoping Browne would do that but didn’t think he would. He says he tried to get an Ezekiel choke but Browne was ready for it so he modified it. He closes by saying again that he loves all MMA fans regardless of their nationality, which gets a pop from the crowd.

Here’s the finish, interesting angles on the choke but the commentary team does a better job of explaining it than I can.

Rob Font is 3-1 in the UFC and has cracked the top fifteen recently, Font is trying to both defend that spot and move up in the rankings. Douglas Silva de Andrade is 2-1 in the UFC and on a two fight winning streak, he’s hoping to crack the top fifteen with a win here and start moving up in competition towards the top of the division. Font has the favor of the odds here at -325 to +250 for de Andrade.

Bantamweight Bout: #15 Rob Font (13-2, 135 lbs.) vs. Douglas Silva de Andrade (24-1 1 NC, 134 lbs.)

Font lands a long right to the body then de Andrade defends a takedown. They split jabs, Font’s looking for an angle and a reaction. De Andrade eats a wicked combination and a knee to the face but took an eye poke after that ended. We’ve got time, and a replay confirms the eye poke as Font was pushing off after landing the knee. The doctor has no problem with de Andrade continuing, and they touch gloves to restart the action. De Andrade lands a straight right, Font lands a leg kick. De Andrade lands a left body kick. Font lands a bit of a right then a leg kick, Font seems to be finding his groove. De Andrade lands a left hook. Font gets a clinch, knees the body then lands an elbow before de Andrade slips free. De Andrade lands a left hook, eats a counter knee. Font lands a right then a right to the body. Font lands a stepping knee, grabs a guillotine as de Andrade gets a takedown but time runs out before the situation can progress.

ROUND TWO: Touch of gloves for the second round. They both show jabs early, Font still pushing forward. Font lands a body kick. Font lands a right uppercut, he’s looking very smooth now. Font slipping and landing while de Andrade is swinging a bit wild. They trade leg kicks. Font lands a bit of a right. Font lands a left at the end of a combination. De Andrade lands a leg kick but Font pushes him back off of it. Font lands a bit of a left, de Andrade has a right blocked. De Andrade lands a straight right. Font lands a looping right. Font lands a stepping knee to the body, he’s becoming a little reliant on a particular combination, I wonder if de Andrade can get a read on it. Font lands a jab, gets a Thai clinch and lands some knees to the body before de Andrade gets free. Font lands a clubbing right that hurts de Andrade. Font swarms with knees and a body shot, de Andrade fires back and Font hits a double leg into side control. De Andrade holding the head, bails on that to try and escape, Font holding a front head lock while de Andrade is on his haunches. Font grabs a guillotine, de Andrade tries to slam out of it but he lands on the wrong side and can’t get his neck free before he has to tap.

That’s why you don’t try to just slam out of a guillotine attempt, you frequently just make the position worse for yourself. Font on the mic now. He says the opportunity to be on PPV was great and he plans on staying here. He says he was giving de Andrade too many opportunities to hit him in the first round but after that he felt good and is happy to get the win. He talks us through the finish and says he heard de Andrade gagging a bit and that he landed on the wrong side so he really went for it.

Anthony Pettis is a former lightweight champion, but despite his ability he’s hit a really rough patch. Pettis is just 1-4 in his last five fights, is coming off of his first ever TKO loss when he took on Max Holloway at featherweight. Pettis just went 1-1 at featherweight and missed weight for the Holloway fight, he’s moving back to lightweight here. Pettis hasn’t won at lightweight since 2014, if he wants any kind of chance at reclaiming the title he once held he has to win here. Jim Miller has been with the UFC since 2008, he’s coming off of a loss when he took on Dustin Poirier which snapped a three fight winning streak. Miller is closing in on the end of his career, but he can prove he’s still got some gas in the tank here and get what might be the biggest name value win of his career. Pettis enjoys favored status, -230 to a potential +180 payout for Miller.

Lightweight Bout: Jim Miller (28-9 1 NC, 155 lbs.) vs. Anthony Pettis (19-6, 156 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Pettis is two inches taller and has an inch and a half of reach on Miller. Miller fighting southpaw, Pettis will switch his stance. Miller lands a low inside leg kick. Miller lands a straight left then another inside leg kick. Miller lands a bit of a left off of a brief clinch. Miller again working the inside leg kick. Miller blocks a high kick. Pettis lands a body kick. Miller misses, Pettis misses a counter. Miller again with that low inside calf kick, and another one. Pettis lands a body kick. Pettis lands a right. Miller lands a body kick, Pettis returns it. Miller with an inside leg kick, Pettis hurts Miller with a body kick. Pettis tries to swarm, lands some good blows but Miller fires back. Pettis lands a one two, his straight punches are landing. Miller lands a bit of a left after eating a couple of punches. Pettis lands a hard body kick. Pettis lands a spinning back fist. Pettis lands a jumping body kick. Miller is too stationary here, he needs to move forward because when Pettis is going forward he’s at his best. Miller lands a bit of a right then a body kick. Miller eats a head kick, not enough time for Pettis to follow up though.

ROUND TWO: Miller lands a bit of a left, he’s pressing forward early. Miller lands a body kick. Pettis misses a couple of head kicks, Miller kicks out his leg on the second and gets on top. Pettis trying a triangle choke, Miller pulls out of it though. Miller postures through another triangle attempt and lands a hard couple of lefts. Miller is bleeding from the head after that high kick. Miller lands an elbow, Pettis might be bleeding now. Miller lands a glancing left. Pettis is keeping his guard closed mostly, he rolls and Miller has his back with both hooks in. Pettis tries to turn into him, they scramble and Pettis is on top now. Pettis lands a couple of short elbows. Pettis is in half guard now and looking to pass. Miller thinks about a leg lock, Pettis stands, lands a leg kick and goes back into the half guard. Pettis to side control now. Miller tries to roll, Pettis flattens him back out. Pettis lands a knee to the body. Miller to his knees, Pettis has the back now with both hooks in. Pettis gets his first lightweight win since beating Gilbert Melendez, and gets an interview. He says he felt good here and says he just went to featherweight chasing a belt and it didn’t go his way. He says he loves not having a weight cut and had a lot of fun in this fight. He says he feels a lot better in his natural weight class, wishes his daughter a happy birthday to close out his mic time.

Daniel Omielanczuk is on a two fight losing streak and barely holding on to a top fifteen ranking. He’s trying to snap that losing streak here and avoid the dreaded three fight skid that has led to the release of so many fighters. Curtis Blaydes has only lost to Francis Ngannou and is coming off of a No Contest, originally an injury related win for him, and is looking to crack the top fifteen with a win here. Blaydes is a prohibitive favorite, a massive -750 against a tempting +475 payout for Omielancuzk.

Heavyweight Bout: Curtis Blaydes (6-1 1 NC, 257.5 lbs.) vs. #15 Daniel Omielanczuk (19-7-1 1 NC, 248 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Blaydes is four inches taller and has six inches of reach on Omielanczuk. Touch of gloves to get us going, Omielanczuk fighting southpaw. Omielanczuk lands a bit of a left. Blaydes goes for a double leg, and they wind up clinched on the fence. Some knees from Blaydes, one of them goes low so we’ve got time. Omielanczuk is good to continue and we’re restarted at distance. Omielanczuk lands another left. Blaydes lands a body kick. Blaydes bulls into the clinch again and they trade some knees. Blaydes lands an elbow as well, then drops for a double leg, and bails on that to retain the clinch. They trade a few blows as they break apart. Omielanczuk lands a bit of an inside leg kick. Body kick from Omielanczuk. Blaydes goes for another double leg, winds up stalled on the fence. Blaydes should probably switch to a snap single leg, Omielanczuk is standing a little side on towards him keeping him from getting to his hips. They trade a bit in the clinch then break apart. Blaydes really needs to maybe time a takedown better, he seems to psych himself up for the lean and charge rather than read what Omielanczuk is doing. Blaydes lands a jab, eats an inside leg kick. Blaydes lands an inside leg kick. Omielanczuk wings a left to the body. They both miss, Blaydes tries a takedown as Omielanczuk kicks but nothing comes of it. They get close and swing, Omielanczuk lands a knee to the face as Blaydes ducks for a clinch. Blaydes lands an elbow as he separates. Omielanczuk lands a bit of a left. Blaydes after another double leg, and again nothing comes of it. Seriously man, adjust, at least try a single leg from distance. They trade lefts as they break the clinch. ROUND THREE: Blaydes lands an inside leg kick and avoids a left. Omielanczuk buzzes Blaydes with a left. Omielanczuk lands a left, he’s trying to force a brawl. Omielanczuk lands a jab. Blaydes tries a double leg, and I’ll give you one guess as to what happens next. Blaydes trying a single leg against the fence, Omielanczuk wont go down though. Blaydes lands a right as they break. They’re both pretty well gassed at this point. Omielanczuk lands a left to the body. Omielanczuk lands a clubbing left. Blaydes misses, Omielanczuk misses, and I want to watch basically anything else. Blaydes lands a couple of jabs, Omielanczuk lands a body kick. They trade power hand punches. Blaydes fails on another double leg. Omielanczuk tries a low single leg, Blaydes sprawls and lands some elbows to the body. Omielanczuk still has the leg and is looking to get him down. They scramble back up and both spend ten seconds sucking wind after that exertion. They both miss power hand punches again. Omielanczuk misses an ugly wheel kick. Omielanczuk lands a short right hook as the last blow of the fight.

Blaydes gets an interview, because we didn’t see enough of him already I guess. Blaydes says he should have done better and that Omielanczuk was ready for his wrestling. He says he beat Omielanczuk at his own game, I’d disagree with that. He says he’s got to work on his hands and wasn’t comfortable with Omielanczuk as a southpaw.

Remember when this card had momentum? To try and reclaim some of that we get highlights from Gaethje vs. Johnson from last night, to be fair that fight was all kinds of awesome.

Fabricio Werdum is a former UFC heavyweight champion, he lost that title to Stipe Miocic but is coming off of a win over Travis Browne. Werdum is trying to get another shot at the heavyweight title with an impressive win here. Alistair Overeem is coming off of a win over Mark Hunt, before that he lost a title fight against Stipe Miocic. In fact the only guy to beat both of these men recently has been Miocic. Overeem is trying to earn another shot at the title as well. This is actually a trilogy fight, these two are 1-1 to this point, for those interested in that. Overeem is a slight -140 favorite against +110 for Werdum.

Heavyweight Bout: #3 Alistair Overeem (42-12 1 NC, 253.5 lbs.) vs. #1 Fabricio Werdum (21-6-1, 239 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: These two are the same height while Overeem has three inches of reach on Werdum. Biggest difference is the weight in favor of Overeem, just under twenty pounds. Overeem switches his stance frequently, Werdum opens with a jumping knee that misses badly. Overeem circling early, his hands are very low. Werdum misses a couple of kicks. Werdum lands a bit of an inside leg kick. Overeem lands a left high kick, Werdum pushes into a clinch. Overeem gets Werdum on the fence. Overeem pulls free without incident. Both guys looking to snipe here. Werdum lands a bit of a right and misses a high kick. Overeem avoids a couple of punches. Both men feinting a lot, they don’t want to make a bit error. Overeem lands a bit of a right and Werdum slips, Overeem lands a leg kick before Werdum regains his feet. Werdum lands a body kick. Overeem lands a one two combination. Overeem misses a left. Werdum lands a body kick. Overeem is trying to bait Werdum into breaking his stance and chasing, basically trying to kind of set up the same finish Miocic used against Werdum. Overeem sprawls on a bad takedown attempt. Overeem lands a stiff jab then a right to follow it up. Werdum lands a front kick to the body. Werdum misses a rolling thunder kick, just for comedy, and the round ends.

Overeem lands a heavy body kick, Werdum catches it and pulls guard. Overeem stands and makes Werdum get up. Overeem avoids a couple of punches. Overeem lands a bit of a left. Overeem lands another body kick, Werdum returns it. Overeem lands a straight left that stuns Werdum, they clinch and Werdum pulls guard again. Overeem stands out of his guard again. Werdum lands a body kick. Overeem avoids a looping right. Overeem lands a counter left then a jumping body kick. When Overeem decides to go he looks very smooth. Werdum lands a bit of a right. Werdum lands a one two then a knee from a clinch, Overeem is down but Werdum tries a guillotine and Overeem gets free and is on top. Overeem pulls free and we’re at distance. Werdum lands a couple of punches, Overeem is still wobbly. Werdum hits a double leg into the guard of Overeem. Werdum landing a few hammer fists but Overeem is stalling him out. Not sure I’d go 10-8 in the third personally, but I’m not sure it’s objectively all that wrong either. Overeem on the mic now. The crowd is booing. He puts over Werdum as a great fighter, he though he took the first two while Werdum obviously got the third. He says he was worried in the third, but reiterates that he had the first two and puts over Werdum again and talks about how much he respects him. He says the hard work continues, he failed to get the belt last time but he wont stop working until he gets the title.

They air this really incredible promo for UFC 214, focusing mostly on Jon Jones and his journey both good and bad. Tremendous video piece.

Yoel Romero is one of the premier middleweights in the world, he’s yet to taste defeat in that weight class and is undefeated in the UFC as well. Romero is coming off of a crazy flying knee knockout win over Chris Weidman and has only gone to decision twice in his career. Romero is trying to claim the interim title here and secure a date for the real one further down the line. Robert Whittaker has also never lost at middleweight, he’s on a seven fight winning streak overall and is coming off of a big win when he stopped Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the second round. Whittaker is also trying to secure a shot at the middleweight title with a win here, and the winner here is arguably the best middleweight in the world. The odds closed here as a -115 pick ’em.

Middleweight Bout: #1 Yoel Romero (12-1, 185 lbs.) vs. #3 Robert Whittaker (18-4, 184.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: These two are the same height and have the same reach. Biggest difference is age, Romero is 14 years older than Whittaker. Romero fighting southpaw. Touch of gloves to get things going. Romero again lands a front kick to the thigh. Whittaker staying light on his feet so far, Romero patiently finding opportunities. Whittaker lands a front kick to the body, Romero lands a body kick. Whittaker lands a jab. Romero with that stomp kick to the knee again. Romero misses a hook kick. They get close, Romero gets a takedown but Whittaker is back up and they jockey in the clinch then break. Romero tries a flying knee, blocked and they clinch, Whittaker blocks a body lock takedown attempt and they wind up on the fence. Whittaker breaks the grip and spins free. Whittaker lands a bit of a jab. Romero lands an inside leg kick. Whittaker lands a front kick to the body. Another front kick from Whittaker. Whittaker lands a right, Romero tries a double leg but Whittaker whizzers and stays upright. Romero lands another inside leg kick. ROUND TWO: Whittaker said his left leg is trashed between rounds, those thrust kicks to the knee did some damage. They touch gloves for the second round. Whittaker bouncing around. Whittaker lands a bit of a head kick. Romero lands a bit of an absurdly athletic superman punch. Whittaker avoids a side kick to the knee but he’s a little compromised on that leg. Romero lands a jumping knee to the body. Romero hits a knee tap takedown into the guard of Whittaker. They’re stalling out a bit, Whittaker just holding on and Romero isn’t breaking his grip. Romero gets some posture but can’t pass. Whittaker tries a sweep but Romero gets his back. They’re up and Romero has a waist lock, Whittaker gets to the fence. Romero knees the body. Whittaker turns into him. Romero gets the waist lock again and trips Whittaker down, Whittaker back up again and they’re still clinched. They trade some knees to the thigh. Really good fight there. Whittaker on the mic now. He says that was the most agonizing fifteen second announcement of his life but getting the decision was awesome. Asked about the knee, he says that kick aggravated an injury he sustained in camp. He says he knew Romero would capitalize on his weakness if he saw it, he says he couldn’t get his jab going because of that injury. He says the issue was structural. Asked on the eventual Bisping fight, he says they were supposed to fight earlier and he feels their destined to fight. Bisping on the mic, says the fight was awesome but the interim title makes him sic, he throws down the middleweight belt and says he can fight him for it. Whittaker says Bisping is the champion and a veteran and he looks forward to fight. He says that he’s sorry Bisping got sick at the belt, but if it came in necklace form he’d wear that instead.

Romero gets an interview as well. Romero says the fight was very close and he can’t argue with the judges in this case. Asked if he saw the knee injury he knew he’d hurt it but he couldn’t find the right moment to exploit it. He says if he lost it’s still part of God’s plan and thanks God for this as well. Asked where he thinks he fits in he’s here and he’s here to fight. He says he’ll never give up.
