Demetrious Johnson Gives His Thoughts on John Dodson

December 24, 2012 | Posted by Jeffrey Harris

Earlier this month, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson hosted a Q&A session with fans prior to the UFC on Fox 5 weigh-ins. Johnson will next face top contender John Dodson in the main event at UFC on Fox 6 on January 26. Here are some highlights:

On how he’s not looking for avenging his previous loss to Dominick Cruz in a “super-fight”: “I think that fight was a great fight, and Dominick is a great champion, and I hope he has a great recovery for his ACL. It was a great learning experience, and I think I found my home at 125 (pounds). Now, let’s say two years down the road, I’m cleaning house in the flyweight division and Dominick is doing the same thing at bantamweight, and the UFC is like, ‘We’re going to do [Georges St-Pierre] vs. Anderson Silva, but we’re also going to do Johnson vs. Cruz superfight.’ Then maybe it will make sense.”

His response to the flyweight division limited and how with only 15 fighters in the division at the moment, many of them are potential opponents for Johnson: “I don’t want to say it’s limited. We have great talent out there. Let’s say the next fight is Chris Cariaso vs. John Moraga, and the winner of that doesn’t mean I’ll fight that guy. I’ll go fight the guy he beat up, too, because that’s still an opponent out there for me. And they’re still looking for new talent, as well.”

His thoughts on his next opponent, John Dodson: “The one thing Dodson does so well when he fights people is that he keeps a lot of distance. When somebody does that, he dictates the fight. I think I have good fundamentals and good footwork, so that negates all the stuff that people try to do to me.”
