Derek Brunson Says Chris Leben is a Great Matchup For Him

December 28, 2012 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

Derek Brunson recently spoke with MMAjunkie about his fight with Chris Leben at UFC 155. Check out the highlights:

On his matchup with Leben: “It’s a great fight stylistically. Obviously I’d like to have more time to prepare. I took it short-notice. But I did a lot of preparation even when I didn’t have fights (lined up).”

On losing out on a spot in TUF because of his Strikeforce contract: “This producer came up, and she had tears in her eyes. She was like, ‘This is the worst news I ever had to tell somebody.’ She said she was sorry. ‘We tried to work it until the last minute, but we just couldn’t get it done.'”

On taking a bout with ShoFight, which he lost by split decision: “It was stupid, and I didn’t even want to take the fight … but I needed to make money. So I took the fight. I did everything I could on four days’ notice. I dominated the kid every round.”

On the risk of taking the fight with Leben on such short notice: “I don’t really look at it like that. A fight is a fight. The UFC is the standard and the biggest organization, and everybody dreams of getting to the UFC. But at the end of the day, when you get in that cage, it’s time to fight. I get excited about fighting Chris Leben, but it’s not like, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s Chris Leben!’ … But when it comes to jitters, it doesn’t matter. He’ll be across the cage from me, and it’ll be time to go.”
