Eddie Alvarez Is Up to Fight Conor McGregor at Welterweight

Eddie Alvarez spoke at a Q&A (via MMAjunkie) about his title win over Rafael dos Anjos and more. Some highlights are below:

On his family’s reaction to his title win: “My first text was from my 8-year-old. He got a little ahead of himself. He texted me and said, ‘Dad, we’re rich.’ I said, ‘Do you know something I don’t know?’”

On a possible fight with Conor McGregor: “I started my career at 170. Actually, I wouldn’t have to make the cut, so I’d actually appreciate that if he made it at 170. I don’t like going to 155; I do it because everyone else does. It just means we’ll have a better training camp, more power, and it will be a little more enjoyable. 100 percent, I’d fight McGregor at welterweight.”

On not being interested in a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov: “I’ve fought every top guy. When I came in the UFC and was ranked No. 10, I fought all the guys in front of me to get to this guy. I didn’t fight No. 30, No. 25, No. 40, No. 50 and then say I want a title shot. I said I want to fight that guy because he’s the best, that guy because he’s better, that guy because he’s better than him, then I want to fight the champion. That’s what you do when you want a title shot – you fight the best guys that are in front of you. You don’t fight No. 30, No. 50, No. 40, rack up a great record and then say, ‘I want a title shot.’”

On being called out by others: “I fight the best, [Nurmagomedov] fights the rest. That’s how that goes. Tony’s calling me out, Khabib’s calling me out. When you win the belt, everyone calls you out, just so you know. I’ve got my own agenda. I’m trying to get this fight.”
