Frankie Edgar Says Charles Oliveira is a ‘Very Dangerous Opponent’

June 30, 2013 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

Frankie Edgar recently spoke with MMAjunkie about his fight with Charles Oliveira at UFC 162 and more. Check out the highlights:

On being in his first non-title fight in three years: “It’s definitely a mental test, and it makes you tougher, I think,” Edgar told “I dealt with it before in my amateur wrestling career. I took second in high school state (wrestling tournament), I took second in high school nationals, I missed being an All-American by an overtime match. So that’s what I felt like – a lot of these fights were almost like taking second place. I’ve been there before and I could’ve packed it in, but I chose not to. That’s just what I’m doing here. I’m working my way back, and I’m keeping things positive.”

On Oliveira: “I think he’s a very dangerous opponent. When he first came in (to the UFC), people were talking about him being the next big thing. So just because he had a couple setbacks himself doesn’t mean he doesn’t have the talent and the ability to be one of the top guys in this weight class.”

On his strategy: “I prepared to be able to handle everything. I’m confident in my jiu-jitsu and my preparation for this fight with his jiu-jitsu. So wherever we go – if we go down, I’m going to go for it. But I’m going to put myself in the best position to win and we’ll see what happens.”

On wanting to break his winless streak: “I always try to think of the positive and think of the moments after the fight and walking in victory lane, so to speak. And that’s something I’m looking forward to.”
