MMA Fighting reports that according to the USADA’s policy, Brock Lesnar and Jon Jones are facing a maximum one-year suspension for their failed drug tests, not the usual two-year suspension. This is because of what exactly was found when the tests came back positive. Both tested positive for hydroxy-clomiphene (an anti-estrogen agent) and Jones also tested positive for Letrozole metabolite, an aromatase inhibitor. The drugs are considered “specified substances” under the World Anti-Doping Agency Code.

The code states: “There is a greater likelihood that these (specified) substances could be susceptible to a credible non-doping explanation.

The WADA Code acknowledges that it’s possible for drugs like those to enter an athlete’s body accidentally, “and therefore allow a tribunal more flexibility when making a sanctioning decision.”

If an athlete is found with a specified substance, they could receive as little as a public warning. If the athlete decides not to accept the sanction, they can go to arbitration overseen by the American Arbitration Association (independent of the USADA). The figher could also chose between a single arbitrator or a three person panel. USADA has not announced what kind of sanction it will give to Jones and Lesnar.
