Kevin Lee Not Pleased That Jim Miller Won’t Fight Him

August 31, 2015 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

Kevin Lee spoke with MMAjunkie about his fight with Leonardo Lee at UFC 194, his habit of calling out fighters on social media and more. Check out the highlights:

On fighters not responding to his call-outs: “Some of the guys I was calling out, like the top-15 guys, I get it: They don’t want to fight somebody who’s unknown. It’s a very high-risk fight because I’m going to win the fight. So they lose to someone like me, who’s not really as well known as them, I get it.”

On non-top fifteen fighters ignoring him: “I’m pissed at some of the veterans, and I’ll call somebody out here. I was supposed to fight Jim Miller. For an old vet like Jim Miller, I just don’t get it. The guy’s not going to be champ. A lot of these guys aren’t going to be champs, and I think they realize that, and they just want to cash in on some little fights, keep fighting the Danny Castillos of the world and squeak by and get a little win bonus.”

On those who think he goes too far: “Other fighters don’t like it? I think it’s a bunch of bullsh-t. If you’re in the fight game and you get butt hurt over a couple comments, you shouldn’t be in the fight game to begin with. I get fan backlash, people calling it disrespectful. It’s all bullsh-t to me. I really don’t care about the disrespect sh-t. We’re in here to punch each other; a couple mean words ain’t really going to hurt nobody. I don’t sugarcoat it.”

On suggesting that the UFC was reluctant to spotlight him due to his comments: “I did think that, but after time and especially after talking to them, I don’t think it’s like that anymore. The UFC is building me right now to be a star, and this is how you build stars for the long run. Sometimes I get a little ahead of myself and jump the gun, but when I step back and I think about it, they’re building me the right way, and I appreciate it.”

On not being as confident when he was growing up: “I was always told as a kid that the white boys out in the suburbs were working harder, that they were doing better, especially growing up in wrestling. That’s just kind of how we were taught, and that’s kind of how my mentality was.”

On his training regiment: “I don’t think anybody in the game trains like I do. I watch them train, and I see what they do and I’m like. I can do that sh-t way better, and I am better, and it comes out.”

On the lightweight division: “The division is wide open, especially since Rafael dos Anjos won the title. I think he’s going to lose the title to (Donald) Cerrone, and I don’t think Cerrone is champ material. I think Cerrone is someone that likes to go out and fight, but doesn’t really care about being champion, doesn’t really want to be a champion. I don’t think Cerrone will hold it very long. The division is wide open, and it’s going to continue to be wide open for the next two years. And once I step in, I’ll put it on lock. For me, it’s all going to work out for the perfect timing.”
