Lundell MMA coach Ricky Lundell spoke with MMAjunkie about Carlos Condit’s fight with Demian Maia at UFC on FOX 21. Some highlights are below:

On being glad Condit decided against retirement:“Carlos Condit is looking incredible right now. He’s openly discussed with everybody that he understands that the fight game only lasts so long. That being said, he’s going after the best fights right now he can possibly get. He wants the big fights, the strong title-contention runs, and he’d like to hold that belt again. He’s definitely in a spot where he’s ready to fight.”

On Condit’s fight with Maia: “This is a big fight. It’s exciting. It shows who the No. 1 contender is in the division, and there’s not a better time for Carlos Condit because he’s at the pinnacle right now with his career and his ability.”

On Maia: “Demian Maia, he’s fun to get ready for because I like to challenge myself as a coach. He’s so great at the jiu-jitsu aspect of the game. That’s really what gives him his ability inside the octagon now. He was kind of in and out, kind of running a bumpy road, then he got back to his jiu-jitsu game, and now he’s flourishing once again. Getting ready for him is a challenge for the entire (Jackson-Winkeljohn MMA) team, it’s a challenge for Lundell MMA team, and we’re excited about what that means. There’s a lot intricate things that Demian does. You have to be ready for his underhook series game. You’ve got be ready for his shots. You’ve got to be ready for the way he lures people in. But Carlos is ready for every single one of those things right now.”
