Mike Brown Doesn’t Think He’ll Ever Fight Again

October 10, 2016 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

Former WEC champion Mike Brown spoke with MMAjunkie about his coaching work with American Top Team and more. Some highlights are below:

On if he’d fight again: “I don’t think (I’ll fight again). I’m happy with my coaching job. I’m happy with what I do. I do miss it – I would love to fight again. But it would take me away from coaching, and I’m so committed to that now. I’m so busy. It’s just one fight after another, after another. Something would have to be neglected, and at that point it would be coaching. So I really don’t have time to do it right now – although there are parts that I do miss, and there are parts that I really love, and parts that I don’t miss, also. I would love to fight again, of course, but I don’t see that ever happening again.”

On the dirction of MMA: “It’s interesting the direction the sport is going. It’s turning more entertainment than it is sport. I have mixed feelings on that. When I was younger, too, I kind of didn’t get it that much. I kind of thought as myself as a, ‘Hey, I’m a fighter. I’m going to fight and do my best and win. When you’re the promoter, you promote the fight. My job is to fight and win.’ I didn’t probably promote myself as much as I should’ve. But I get it now. I guess I didn’t always get that, but I see how important it is. You see what McGregor has done, and nobody does it as well as he does. It just makes you realize how important that type of thing is. It’s not necessarily if you’re the best fighter, but how many tickets and pay-per-views you’re selling.”

On those who wait on title shots: “It sucks for those guys who are just waiting and waiting. And their dream is to be UFC champion, but it’s just on the shelf. It’s got to be tough for a guy like (Max) Holloway or (Frankie) Edgar, these guys who are right there on the cusp of winning that belt, or (interim featherweight champion Jose) Aldo. Again, they’re just waiting and waiting in limbo, and not sure when or if he’s ever going to come back down.”
