Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza Focused On Ed Herman And UFC Future
In an interview with MMA Junkie, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza (16-3 MMA, 6-1 SF) says he’s focusing on his fight with Ed Herman (20-8 MMA, 0-0 SF) in a catch weight fight at “Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine”. The event takes place at the Chesapeake Energy Center in Oklahoma City. The main card will air on Showtime at 10 PM ET after preliminary fights on Showtime Extreme at 7 PM ET. This will be the last Strikeforce show ever.
After beating Derek Brunson by knockout in 41 seconds in August, Souza was thought to be in line for a middleweight title shot at Luke Rockhold, who won the title from him in August 2010. Rockhold was then set to fight Lorenz Larkin for the title, but Rockhold was injured. Larkin went into a fight with Souza, but then Larkin was injured so Herman was named as his replacement.
On the complications surrounding his fight: “It doesn’t matter. Things happened the way they were supposed to. I’m happy with the opportunity to fight, especially against someone like Ed Herman, a very difficult opponent.”
On other UFC fighters not wanting to cross over to fight him: “It makes me happy to know that I’m known as a tough guy whose adversaries have to think twice before accepting a bout. I feel I’ve put in a lot of hard work regarding my wrestling and standup, and thankfully my submission game remains excellent due to my jiu-jitsu experience. It’s good to know that other fighters take me so seriously.”
On his plan for 2013: “My goal is fight three times this year in the UFC if all goes well. I feel they would book me for sure, based on my fight history in Brazil. Practically everyone who practices jiu-jitsu knows me, plus I do wish to fight in my own country.”
