UFC 154’s Darren Elkins Gives His Thoughts on Fighting in the Facebook Prelims
MMAjunkie Radio spoke with UFC featherweight fighter Darren Elkins (14-2, MMA; 4-1, UFC) who faces Steve Siler (21-9, MMA; 3-0, UFC) in the opening bout of UFC 154 on the Facebook preliminary portion of the card.
His thoughts on being on the Facebook prelims: “What can I do? That’s something that’s out of my hands. The only thing I really can focus on is fighting. The rest is out of my control. I wish I was on FX or the main card, but that’s done and over. All I can do is focus on the future.”
What a victory would mean for the winner of this fight: “I think the winner has a lot of momentum going into next year and will probably get a big fight (against) a big contender guy. At least a Top 10 contender.”
On his wrestling background and how that’s helped him in his MMA career: “I’ve been wrestling since I was 4, so it’s more a thing that’s just a part of me now. It’s toughened me mentally. You go through that daily grind (in wrestling) and you go through weight cuts and you’ve got to make it every week, instead of once every few months. Injuries year-round. You just deal with the things you can deal with, and mentally you’re never out of anything – you’ve got to believe in yourself the whole time.”
His thoughts on his opponents and his recent fights: “I haven’t had any easy fights – they give me tough fights. But you know what? That’s what I’m here for. I’m here to fight. Sometimes, I’m a big underdog, but I believe in myself and I really don’t care. I go out there and I fight. I’m happy with whoever they give me. I’m just happy to be back in the octagon fighting somebody.”
