UFC 200: Real Winners and Losers

July 11, 2016 | Posted by Jeremy Lambert

UFC 200 was this past weekend and you probably didn’t think it was all that great because that’s what the consensus seems to be. Let me tell you how you should feel about the event and breakdown the real winners and losers from the event.

Winner – WWE

Everyone said this was a bad idea. “Brock is going to get knocked out and may not even compete at SummerSlam. How does that help WWE?” Even if Brock did get KO’d, WWE still got paid for this fight and they got some good promotion as well. And what do you know, Brock is some superhuman cyborg who beat Hunt. Now, thanks to one fight, Brock’s stock is way up again after it cooled dramatically during the Dean Ambrose feud. WWE has a megastar on their hands again. Will they screw it up? Probably. I wouldn’t be shocked if Randy Orton beats Brock at SummerSlam just so Vince can have Orton stick it to Brock one more time (remember when Brock was the youngest champ ever but Orton took that claim from him after the Brock/WWE dispute?) because that’s the kind of guy Vince is. For the moment, WWE came out of this thing a huge winner. They made money, they got some promotion, and Brock looks like even more of a monster when he returns. Whether or not they capitalize on all that remains to be seen.

Loser – Daniel Cormier

Cormier is a guy who does nothing wrong but fans don’t like him. Vince would definitely push him to the moon. Cormier didn’t fail a drug test and ruin the main event, but his fight purse was cut in half because he went from the last fight on the card to the third fight on PPV. Tangent, did Meisha Tate and Amanda Nunes receive a higher purse for being in the main event? Probably not. Anyway, Cormier made less money and was boo’d out of the building for fighting a smart fight and not risking anything. Cormier had everything to lose and almost nothing to gain by standing with Anderson Silva. The dude lost half his money, can you blame him for turning in half a fight? Jones is the real villain here, but once again Cormier looks like the bad guy because, while he doesn’t do anything wrong, he does everything wrong.

Winner – Colors

Did you notice that fighters were able to put some color on their shorts? Now we’ll hopefully never run into the issue of two fighters wearing virtually identical shorts and having virtually identical haircuts and bad tattoos. Not only did we see yellow, blue, red, etc… shorts, but we had a GOLD MAT! It looked more like mustard and was a complete eyesore, but everyone complained about the lack of colors, so Dana gave everyone colors. QUIT COMPLAINING!

Loser – Rumors and Moments

Rumor had it that Brock was going to use his WWE theme for his walk-in and his entrance was going to be special. Rumor had it that Conor McGregor was going to cut a promo on the Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar winner and Nate Diaz. Rumor had it that Ronda Rousey was going to face-off with the winner of Miesha Tate vs. Amanda Nunes in the cage. Rumor had it she ain’t got your love anymore. Honestly, it was a pretty dull night. Outside of Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg telling us that the card was special and historic, nothing felt all that special or historic. The crowd was pretty dead (or mic’d poorly), Brock didn’t go crazy on the mic and bury sponsors or hint at sexing his wife, there was no highlight reel knockout or submission. It just felt like another UFC event except with fighters you’ve heard of.

Winner – UFC 202

UFC 200 and UFC 202 were supposed to go to buyrate war. 200 was a stacked card and a landmark event that would easily do the biggest buyrate in company history. UFC 202, featuring the rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz, was supposed to challenge and possibly surpass that buyrate. With the removal of Jones, UFC 200 took a huge hit and now it’s almost certain that UFC 202 pulls the bigger number. Also, Nate Diaz had the best line of the night when he said, “If this was war, he’d (McGregor) be dead and I’d own all his shit.” In two minutes, Diaz managed to outshine everyone on the UFC 200 card.

Loser – Ronda Rousey

Not only did Travis Browne, Rousey’s boyfriend, get destroyed by Cain Velasquez, but Rousey’s big money fight went right out the window in the main event. The fight will draw, because Rousey is the draw, but a rematch with Holly Holm or a third fight with Miesha Tate would’ve done big business. Instead, she’ll be facing Amanda Nunes. Maybe. It’s possible that Holm faces Nunes first and gets the title back as Rousey takes her sweet time to return. It’s also possible that Nunes isn’t afraid of Cristine ‘Cyborg’ and is willing to fight her. As it stands, if Rousey returns, she’ll be facing a relatively unknown fighter and everyone will expect her to win. It’ll be like nothing has changed.

Winner- Recently Destroyed Champions

There were a lot of questions surrounding Jose Aldo and Cain Velasquez. Would both of them actually show up un-injured? Was Aldo’s chin shot? Was is more than sea level that hindered Cain’s performance? They passed any and all tests with flying colors. Cain looked like the animal that ran through the heavyweight division, not only Browne to do much of anything in the cage. Aldo picked apart Frankie Edgar and showed elite defense throughout the fight. Aldo has earned another fight against McGregor and has a fake belt to prove it while Cain will most likely fight the winner of Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem because, really, who else is there?

Loser – Jon Jones

The UFC put no respeck on Jon Jones name this past weekend. Jones was named the #1 UFC fighter of all-time by FS1’s little countdown show, but somehow, he’s not part of the UFC’s history. In the video that played at UFC 200 that showed the history and evolution of the UFC, Jones wasn’t mentioned once. He was also left for dead in the pre-fight video prior to Daniel Cormier vs. Anderson Silva. Throw in the fact that he spent three months training and didn’t fight, made no money, and will be banned for two years and yeah, Jon Jones is finish and done.
