UFC to Hold 2 PPV Events in August

March 21, 2009 | Posted by Dan Plunkett

As previously reported, the UFC will be going to Philadelphia on August 8, but there is more to that than originally thought. As first reported by Dave Meltzer, and confirmed on popular MMA forum The Underground by UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertita, the UFC will go to Philadelphia on August 8 for UFC 101 and Portland on August 29 for UFC 102. The Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira fight previously reported for UFC 101 will be the main event of UFC 102. The UFC is working on a main event between BJ Penn and Kenny Florian for the lightweight championship for UFC 101, though nothing is official at the moment.

The Forrest Griffin vs. Thiago Silva fight was originally reported to be held at UFC 101, however due to the recent revelations of there being two PPV’s in August, and Forrest’s relationship with Randy Couture, it is unclear when the fight will take place.

UFC 101 is currently slated for August 8 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the Wachovia Center. The likely fights for the event so far are:

UFC Lightweight Championship: BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian
Melvin Guillard vs. Thiago Tavares

UFC 102 is currently scheduled for August 29 in Portland, Oregon, at the Rose Garden. Here is the card at the moment:

Randy Couture vs. Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira
