USADA Confirms Yoel Romero’s Failed Drug Test

February 8, 2016 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

The USADA confirmed today that Yoel Romero tested positive for a banned substance. USADA rep Ryan Madden told MMAjunkie that Romero tested positive for an undisclosed substance that is on their banned list following his UFC 194 win over Jacare Souza after Romero’s manager admitted to it in a recent interview.

“Given that Mr. Romero has publicly discussed his case, we can confirm that he did test positive for a prohibited substance,” Madden said. “At this time we are investigating the circumstances surrounding his positive test to determine the appropriate outcome, in accordance with the rules. It is also important to remember that there is a full and fair legal process to handle the adjudication of any case, and all athletes are provided full due process before any decision is reached.”

Romero’s manager Malki Kawa had said that Romero’s test was the result of a contaminated supplement that he did not name. He had said it had been tested by the Romero’s team and USADA.

Kawa says that he expected a formal decision by the end of the week on any repercussions for his fighter.
