Zoila Gurgel Done With Bellator, Signs With Invicta FC
According to mmajunkie.com, Zoila Gurgel (12-2) is done with Bellator and has signed a multi-fight agreement with Invicta FC.She is expected to debut at the promotion’s April 6th event, against an opponent to be named.
Gurgel was Bellator’s only women’s champion, but had been at odds with the promotion for a few reasons. In her most recent bout, which was aired on Spike.com, her husband Jorge Gurgel, called the move “borderline dumb” because she would be fighting in front of a smaller audience. Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney stated that the bout was intended to ease her transition back to the cage after such a serious injury. She lost the bout at 58 seconds of the first round via submission.
Back in 2011, there was also an issue between the two sides, Gurgel went to a fundraising website to help pay for injuries she said she sustained fighting for the promotion and was unable to pay due to a lapse in insurance. Bellator offered to pay the fighter’s medical bills, but she later said the promotion failed to follow through.
Bellator and Invicta officials could not be reached to comment on the deal.
