Goin’ Down to South Park 11.07.07: Guitar Queer-O
Quite the title. No questions tonight cause I’m tired.
Stan and Kyle are quite good at this “Guitar Hero” game. Randy Marsh asks his boys what the deal is, and I’m impressed how good the fake game looks. As Randy plays a real guitar, the boys make fun of him and say they’re too young to play the real guitar. “Real guitars are for old people.” Nice line from Cartman. Oh yes, an allegory about how kids should be playing real instruments instead of fake ones.
Randy sucks at the game, and then the boys score 100,000 points. The game calls them rock stars as the doorbell rings. Charles Kincaid from the Kincaid talent agency wants to help the boys get 1,000,000 points.
Stan and Kyle are given the opportunity to go to a Hollywood party. They even get to meet Denver Broncos’ quarterback Jay Cutler. “There’s more coke and sex inside.” Hilarious. Stan and Kyle figure life won’t suck as hard anymore. Both go back to practicing. Kincaid clearly shows a bias toward Stan. Stan and Kyle are now broken up as a duo.
Thad Jarvis, who looks hilarious with his hair plays with Stan, and they are quite good together. Kyle confronts the new partners, and Stan decides to buy his old partner Kyle out. This is… so damn emotional. The band is broken. Just to think, drugs had nothing to do with it.
The rest of the episode takes a hard look at what happens when a band breaks up. Kyle goes back to his roots at a bowling alley where he can get free Fresca’s. Stan becomes addicted to “Heroin Hero” and learns the true value of friendship. There is a payoff that I really don’t want to spoil for you because it really is the only highlight of the episode. Oh boy, does it make up for the rest though.
The 411: The first twenty-one and a half minutes weren't funny at all. I mean, this was one of the more forgettable episodes I've ever seen. This is what happens when Butters and Cartman aren't prominently featured. The ending really saved what was a pedestrian episode. I think there is a lot to be said about a game like "Guitar Hero" but the jokes just felt way too easy and didn't really make me laugh that hard. The ending and what Butters' last line adds a full point to what I was orignally going to give a bad score.
