Rian Johnson Says Star Wars: Episode VIII Will Pick Up Right After The Force Awakens
Star Wars: Episode VIII will skip the longstanding tradition of Star Wars films taking breaks between chapters. Rian Johnson spoke with USA Today and revealed that the film will pick up right where the previous movie left off, with Rey meeting Luke Skywalker on Ahch-To island.
“I don’t want to skip ahead two years, I want to see the very next moment of what happens,” said Johnson. He added that Rey and Luke’s relationship is a key aspect of Episode VIII and that “a large part of the movie” will deal with why Luke is there as well as his purpose moving forward.
“Part of what’s she’s dealing with is the realization that she has this power and this gift,” Johnson said. “She’s taking her first step to coming to terms with this thing inside her that she never knew was there and is just starting to reveal its potential.”
Star Wars: Episode VIII is written and directed by Johnson and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It will star Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis alongside new cast members Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran. It releases on December 15th.
