From Chronicle To Venom?
“Chronicle” director Josh Trank is being tapped to helm Sony’s “Venom” spinoff from its wildly popular and successful “Spider-Man” franchise. Trank is in serious discussions to take control of the project and direct the film which focuses on Venom, an alien symbiotic life form that bonds with a host in order to survive and is one of the more vicious villains in Marvel lore. The “Venom” project has been kicking around for awhile, but it appears Columbia is essentially starting from scratch, with a new writer being brought on for the project and Topher Grace (who played him in “Spider-Man 3”) not expected back in the main role. Jacob Estes (“The Details”) has reportedly turned in a script portraying Venom as more of an antihero and less as a villain, but it now appears that the studio is not looking to redeem the villainous character in any way.
There is no word on release date, casting or what Columbia/Marvel’s plans might be for Spider-Man and Venom.
One of the really depressing aspects of Spider-Man 3 (out of many) was how badly Raimi, Grace and company dropped the ball on the introduction of Venom. It was what everybody was looking forward to and the villain many wanted to see in the Raimi films, but it just didn’t work. I actually don’t mind Topher Grace…but he had the biggest chance he ever had at a big movie career and it just didn’t happen for him. I don’t know if Venom can be a movie all on its own without involvement from Spidey, but I guess we’re going to find out. It’s a huge opportunity for Trank, whose Chronicle is one of the breakout hits of the past year. I am intrigued to see what Trank can do with a big budget superhero movie, but ultimately who they cast as Venom will be the biggest factor. Casting…it matters.
If You Smell What The Rock Is Cooking
If I were John Cena, I’d probably be able to work in a “Tooth Fairy” joke somewhere in here. But seeing as I’m not nearly as creative or hilarious, I’ll stick to news. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (for the two 411 readers who need the name spelled out) is on his way to something of a banner 2012. Not only is he headlining WrestleMania 28 in his hometown of Miami, but he’s also had a box office smash hit in the first couple months of the year (one in which he was heavily promoted as being a star). “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” just passed $270 million worldwide, a good total considering the original “Journey” film topped out at $242 million. Now comes word from Heat Vision, that New Line is moving forward with “Journey 3” which is expected to be the continuation in a new franchise for the studio. Finally it appears a studio is going to tap into Jules Verne’s extensive catalog of work beyond just the most well-known “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” “The Mysterious Island,” “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” and “Around the World in Eighty Days.” Director Brad Peyton stated:
“I grew up a fan of Verne, so I know a lot about the mythologies. ‘Mysterious Island’ was one of eight or nine really seminal works. I know we’ve just scratched the surface of what we can do. This one’s going to be a lot bigger. We’re going to go to a completely different world. It’s just going to be a bigger experience, and we’re going to grow the mythology. ‘Journey 2’ was about rebooting a franchise; now it’s about making the seminal work in the franchise.”
“Journey 3” is being fast-tracked by the studio for an expected 2014 release. They’ve already gotten deals done for the film’s producers, director Brad Peyton and writers Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn to return. There is no word on deals being done for cast members, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Johnson, Vanessa Hudgens, Michael Caine and/or Luis Guzman come back for another film. It may be harder to get Josh Hutcherson – who is the only cast member to appear in both “Journey” films – back for another entry as he is starring as Peeta in “The Hunger Games” trilogy (with the two final films still to be shot). Kids will have to settle for the “Peck Pop of Love” (or whatever it’s called).
In other good news for Dwayne Johnson, he’s also signed, on to star in Brett Ratner’s “Hercules” and Anthony Russo’s intense action thriller, “Ciudad.” “Hercules” is Ratner and screenwriter Ryan Condal’s take on Steve Moore’s 2008 graphic novel, Hercules: The Thracian War.” ARTINFO, describes the graphic novel the following way:
“The 144-page graphic novel depicts how Hercules, the anguished son of Zeus, and his six fellow mixed-sex Greek mercenaries are commissioned by King Cotys of the Odrysae to fuse the warring tribes of Thrace (comprised of parts of modern Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey) into the ancient world’s most ruthless and bloodthirsty army. Cotys, though, is treacherous and has his eyes set on conquering Greece and Olympus itself…”
Production on “Hercules” is set to get underway in New Zealand in October. As for “Ciudad,” Deadline reports the project is “based on the upcoming Oni Press graphic novel that the Russo Brothers co-wrote with Ande Parks. Set in one of the most dangerous and corrupt cities in the world, the thriller will star Johnson as a black market mercenary hired by a Brazilian drug lord to rescue his kidnapped daughter.” It is the first feature film for the Russo brothers since “You, Me and Dupree” with the two working on comedies such as “Arrested Development,” “Community” and “Happy Endings” in the meantime. It is their first attempt at hard-core action. No word yet on release date or the rest of the cast.
Anyone who thought The Rock’s movie career was declining or that he needs the WWE or WrestleMania to jump-start his career is either ignorant or delusional. The fact of the matter is that nobody in Hollywood works harder than Dwayne Johnson. He’s worked hard to become a better actor, he goes above and beyond when promoting his movies and he has accepted roles and films that run the gamut. And he’s been doing it as part of his strategy to build and grow his movie career for years. He’s a movie star and, at this point, is an actor who Hollywood can lean on in any number of films – whether they be family comedies, effects-driven action movies or more mature adult thrillers. He is more than likely going to follow up major box office hits like Fast Five and Journey 2 with a highly successful main event at WrestleMania and another box office hit later this summer in G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
Status of Cloverfield 2
“Cloverfield” writer Drew Goddard has provided something of an update for the proposed sequel to the 2008 monster-movie hit. Goddard told Shock Til You Drop:
“I’m in, I’m ready to do it. Someone call J.J. and tell him to get moving, but because Matt and J.J. and I have been fortunate enough to be busy, it’s hard syncing our schedules up. We’re all very passionate about returning to that world.”
When asked if there was an idea about what to do, he added: “If you asked each of us what we wanted to do, you’ll get three different answers, which is how the first film was. The aesthetic of ‘Cloverfield’ benefits from that. Three voices pulling it. Look, nothing would make me happier than to get the three of us in the room to get started. But you’ve got this Star Trek thing…”
Goddard himself is headed to Texas to debut his film, “The Cabin in the Woods,” (produced and co-written by Joss Whedon) at SXSW, while Abrams is currently shooting his “Star Trek” sequel.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the original Cloverfield and can’t say I’m looking forward to a sequel. The whole shaky-cam gimmick was too much and has gotten out of control in Hollywood since. I’m actually looking forward to the individual projects from all three men. There is good buzz around The Cabin in the Woods and it is likely to be one of the hits of the South by Southwest festival. Abrams meanwhile is not allowed (by me) to do or think about anything else until Star Trek 2 comes out. Period.
Universal’s Ouija Back From The Dead
Honestly, nothing has given me more pure joy in writing this column for the last five months than when I get to update Hasbro projects. They just all sound so ludicrous and there is this general sense that literally ANY Hasbro product can be turned into a big, huge, blockbuster film. There’s also a ton of them making their way through the usual Hollywood back-channels. It’s been so long now that we seeing previous projects being resuscitated and brought back into the early stages of production. The newest of these is “Ouija,” a project that Universal sort of loudly gave up on a number of months ago, but now has decided to bring back to life – albeit in a cheaper, smaller-scale form. According to Variety, the project has been brought back from production purgatory and will be vastly different from the one originally conceived.
Now with a 2013 release, “Ouija” will now be a scaled-down genre film with a budget of only about $5 million. That is wildly different from the original plans that called for a huge blockbuster action-adventure tentpole (with McG directing) that had the big budget to match. It will still revolve around the board game that lets players “communicate” with the spirit world. Platinum Dunes producers Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller will continue to produce, along with production shingle Blumhouse (“Paranormal Activity”).
The stunning turnaround is a sign that the relationship between Hasbro and Universal – a pact that was loudly trumpeted as the start of a number of huge tentpoles but resulted in only “Battleship” being made – is healing a bit after it was announced that the toy company would shop its properties elsewhere and produce many of them on their own. “Stretch Armstrong” is now at Relativity while “Candy Land” is at Sony with Adam Sandler on-board. For now, the plot, casting and crew for “Ouija” is unannounced, although with a 2013 release on the horizon, one could imagine details coming out very soon.
Ah, Hasbro…I can’t wait to see this slate of movies. I don’t really find this all that surprising – for $5 million I’m pretty sure any Hollywood studio would let you make whatever the hell you wanted. The fact that it allows both sides to save face a bit is just a bonus. As a pared-down genre movie, a cheap Ouija is a hell of a lot less risky than a mega-blockbuster action Ouija. I never understood why Hasbro wanted to make all these tent-pole blockbusters anyway. I mean I can understand it with Battleship and a big-budget family film like Candy Land but did Stretch Armstrong, Clue and Ouija need to be those kind of movies? I never thought so. This feels like a better fit and with Blumhouse on-board to help produce, maybe they can even get some of that good Paranormal Activity mojo going for it.
Sly’s Bullet to the Head Delayed
We heard over the weekend that Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming action film, “Bullet to the Head,” had been pulled, off the release schedule and rumors abounded that Stallone himself had taken over the editing of the film from director Walter Hill (“The Warriors,” “48 Hrs.”).
Now, after a couple days, we have finally heard, from Warner Bros. as the studio is trying to quash the rumors surrounding the film’s delay. In a move that is somewhat rare, the studio and Hill are trying to quash the rumors surrounding the project by releasing a statement.
“Burbank, CA, March 5, 2012—Contrary to recent inaccurate and unfounded reports that Sylvester Stallone had taken over the editing of BULLET TO THE HEAD, director Walter Hill continues his editing of the movie. Walter Hill said today, “I’m currently finishing up and locking reels on the movie — as to the content and style of the film, Sly and I are in perfect sync. I’m delighted with the way the film is turning out and hopefully so will the audience.”
Hill recently wrapped production on the action thriller starring Sylvester Stallone, which will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.”
However, rumors still abound Stallone’s role in the editing room and the fact that the film’s original release date – April 13 – has yet to be officially replaced, leaving the film in limbo. Perhaps Warner Bros are waiting to see the box office results for Stallone’s “The Expendables 2” or maybe reshoots are needed for “Bullet.” The film is about a New Orleans hitman (Stallone) who teams with an NYPD detective (Sung Kang) to find the men who killed their respective partners.
Very strange story. Stallone can be a bit prickly about his projects and Walter Hill hasn’t really had a hit in over 25 years. One would imagine though that if Hill was being undermined or the film had been taken away from him, he wouldn’t necessarily be quoted in a statement from the studio saying “MOVE ON, FOLKS. EVERYTHING IS FINE, NOTHING TO SEE HERE!” For a movie to be pulled from the schedule isn’t all that shocking, but to be pulled (without a replacement date) a month and a half before the film’s official release isn’t great. I have a feeling we’re going to find out what’s really going on fairly soon.
Jason Segal Not To Be Involved In The Muppets 2
Star and co-writer Jason Segal is apparently not going to be involved with the newly green-lit sequel to ‘The Muppets.” Co-writer Nicholas Stoller and director James Bobin are writing the follow-up to the hit comedy and Segal has confirmed the rumors that he won’t be involved in the new film – in any capacity.
“It’s true but it’s totally amicable. My goal was to bring The Muppets back and I did that leaving them in very good hands, my writing partner and James Bobin the director. I did what I set out to do, and now I wanna pursue more human-related projects (laughs).”
He went on to say about any future involvement: “All I wanted to do was to set the stage for them to do whatever they wanted. I’m sure I’ll return in some capacity here and there, but that was half a decade of my life. Five years of hard work. I’m ready for a little puppet break.”
I really liked The Muppets and the unbridled enthusiasm of both Segal and Amy Adams was a big part of it. Segal obviously loves The Muppets (and puppets in general) and he will be missed. However, the real star of these movies is, and always will be, the Muppets themselves. They’re not irreplaceable, but you have to find the right people. I would also hope that maybe this means the next film won’t necessarily focus as much on Walter (one of the few things I wasn’t crazy about in the film) and perhaps gives Bobin and Stoller license to focus more on the Muppets, now that they’ve been re-introduced to a new generation of movie-goers.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master Is Releasing In…
All you cinephiles and PT Anderson fans will be happy with this one. Anderson’s highly anticipated new film, The Master, has long been rumored to be released sometime in 2012 and now we’ve gotten a hint from Megan Ellison (aka “The Money Behind The Movie”) that that is in fact the case. On the Twitter feed for PT Anderson fan site, Cigarettes and Red Vines,, Ms. Ellison stated:
“@cigsandredvines I know you guys are waiting on a release date for ‘the Master’, and it’s still a bit early, but I’d keep my eyes on October”
While the lineup for this year’s Cannes Film Festival has yet to be finalized or announced, it had been rumored Anderson would premier the film then. I still think it’s possible that the film could premier there (much like The Tree of Life and The Artist did) and build word-of-mouth through critics and film buffs in the months between the festival and an October release. October could also mean a premier at the New York Film Festival, where Boogie Nights and Punch-Drunk Love both had their premiers. Either scenario is a possibility at this point until we hear directly from Anderson and/or The Weinstein Company. Venice and Toronto are also possible festival premier options, but whenever the initial release occurs, rest assured that the film will be placed in contention for major awards.
Let’s Talk Batman Fashion
Let’s talk fashion. Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming recently talked with GQ about the outfits for Bane and Batman in the upcoming “The Dark Knight Rises.” GQ and some others have been particularly taken with Bane’s shearling coat, which is apparently very much a trend at the moment.
“Bane was meant to look like a cross between a dictator and a revolutionary. I designed the coat myself – it took a year. We took inspiration from a Swedish army jacket and a French Revolution frock coat and amalgamated the two. It was a pain to have made, because in LA shearling is not their sort of thing: there weren’t the tailors who could work with the fabric. It’s funny: as soon as it was finished, GQ did a feature about shearling coats, so it looked like I had copied you!”
Hemming went on to reiterate that Bruce Wayne will be wearing Armani. “Christian Bale was in Armani in the last film and I used Armani again for character reasons. Bruce Wayne is himself playing a part: that of a wealthy man who owns an enormous company and so a luxury brand like Armani seemed the right choice.”
< As for Batman’s costume, Hemming coyly states: “There’s very few changes. The only modifications are to do with the story. But I can’t tell you what they are…” As if July couldn’t get here fast enough, we’ve now been reduced to parsing quotes and clues from costume designers. I know it’s Batman and I know the suit matters…but this all simply goes to remind me that we are still four months away from this movie dropping. When it finally does, an entire cottage industry of the internet – Dark Knight Rises rumors and leaks – will disappear and a giant void will form in said interwebs. Then…let the post-Nolan Batman rumors begin.
Casablanca Heading Back To The Big Screen
God bless the folks at Turner Classic Movies and Fathom. In anticipation of the film’s 70th Anniversary and three-disc Blu-Ray/DVD release on March 27, TCM and Fathom are bringing “Casablanca” back to the big screen for one night only on March 21 at select theaters around the country. The digital presentation will also feature an introduction/featurette from TCM host Robert Osbourne. The TCM press release reads:

Some of you may roll your eyes, but I don’t care. Casablanca is my favorite movie of all time (technically I’d put it and LOTR as co-favorites) and is nearly always in the discussion of being the greatest movie ever made. There are just so many lines and scenes that can be recalled, it’s not even funny. And Bogart. This is essentially the pinnacle of Bogart’s career and perhaps the defining “cool,” macho role in Hollywood history and defined what the hard-boiled cynic type should look like on screen. Everyone bitches about Hollywood putting out trash and re-releasing retrofitted movies with a 3D gimmick. Well, here’s arguably one of the greatest films ever made, back on the big screen and probably playing in a town (somewhat) near you. Go check it out.
This week’s trailer face-off showcases the first blockbuster of the year, John Carter, and a couple of the week’s other major wide releases: the Elizabeth Olsen-starring Silent House and the newest Eddie Murphy comedy, A Thousand Words. Also being released in a limited run is the Oscar-nominated foreign film, Footnote.

No Guest#9368, Bruno is not hilarious. It’s pretty much a failure. Like The Great Capt. Smooth said, Sacha Baron Cohen certainly has the balls to do the kind of uncomfortable, ambush comedy he does. Just ask Ryan Seacrest. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I thought we all were sort of in agreement on this one. Borat was great, Bruno wasn’t. It’s okay for one movie to be great and the other not to be; not every single thing that talented, creative people do or put out is going to be equally great. I have no idea how The Dictator is going to turn out. My guess, simply going off the trailer and clips I’ve seen is that it probably falls somewhere in between Borat and Bruno. And just because he has the balls to do it and ambush people with shocking or uncomfortable things, doesn’t inherently make it funny.

That’s okay, I was just having a bit of fun. No need to apologize…I found it sort of unassumingly amusing. I basically agreed with what you were saying. The Vow has pretty much been a smash hit and everything you mentioned probably factors into that success. Plus, it looked like it was a Nicholas Sparks adaptation (even though it wasn’t) and people love and find comfort in those kinds of cosmic romances, especially women.

I know you’re being funny, but Summer of Sam and 25th Hour do come to mind (off the top of my head). Yes, Lee mostly uses black leads, but is that really a terrible thing? We can praise and criticize Lee for a lot of things, but I don’t think the race of who he casts should be one of them. The majority of his movies showcase black actors and actresses, but he’s also made a number with whites and other races as leads or important characters. Tyler Perry uses black leads in his movies. We don’t criticize him for that – we criticize him for making crappy movies. The quality of the movie is what matters. Plus, who else is casting black leads on a regular basis (other than Denzel)?

Yeah I’ll be seeing it sometime this week, even with its somewhat mediocre reviews. Who doesn’t love Dr. Seuss? It’s a shame MOST films aren’t Pixar movies. With the general reputation for quality that studio enjoys (the Cars movies being something of an exception), it’d be nice to find another studio or two that had a really great run of films. Pixar’s Brave is coming though…and it looks pretty good.

The making of, and Game of Thrones trailers gives me the same excitement I felt when I saw the Phantom Menace, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings previews for the first time. Awesome stuff
Totally agree with the trailers and previews for the second season for Game of Thrones. I don’t have HBO so I’m still catching up with the first season (I saw the first episode and parts of the next two), even though I’ve read Martin’s first two books in the series. I love the books and what I’ve seen of the show. I really liked the most recent of the show’s previews – the “Seven Devils” trailer using the Florence and the Machine song. It’s pretty frakkin’ sweet.
As for Prometheus, I’m getting more and more excited for it. I would caution everyone to wait until they’ve seen it to build expectations or question the depth of the film’s connection to Alien. Honestly, we just don’t know very much, other than what has already been leaked. Scott and company spent so long trying to dampen expectations of a “prequel” that I think most feel like you – disappointed that it isn’t more of a direct prequel. I actually think it’ll be a bit more connected than most think. Somewhere between a direct prequel and what we already know. Ultimately though, it has got to stand on its own as a film and define itself on its own terms.

For some reason, that Shasha Cohen cat just reminds me of Tom Green. Maybe it’s the stunts, I don’t know.
Hmm…interesting comparison, although they’re obviously different in their styles. They do both have a taste for the uncomfortable and disgusting, but Cohen prefers using a defined character, each with different traits and personalities. Green always struck me as playing a version of himself in nearly everything he did. I wonder what everyone else thinks of the comparison of the two.
