Hip Hop Herald 02.06.13: G-Unit Reunion, 50 Cent TV Show, Mac Miller Getting Sued By The Donald, Outkast Reunion, More
Welcome one and all to the Hip Hop Herald. The column will deal with anything related to hip hop whether it be underground, mainstream, or the new-age pop infused rap (you know the stuff Timberlake and Timbaland make). We will cover news, opinions, release dates as well as feature some music and of course videos.
Be for we start, be sure to check out some of our exclusive interviews as well as follow me on Twitter.
Two of the biggest media spotlight stealers seem to be facing off as Game and 50 Cent recently both spoke about the potential for a G-Unit reunion. Last week Game went as far as to start and online petition to try to get fans to show their support for a reunion. However, during an interview, 50 Cent said that the reunion is not likely:
“You’re not gonna get nothing back together,” he said. “I decide that. I do what I want to do. I don’t give a fuck what they talking about on a blog post.”
“Every time there was nothing going on [Game] said ‘Fuck you, 50,’ to generate some sort of new interest,” he said. “But now that doesn’t work anymore. So you gotta figure out a new way to do it. And now it’s saying, ‘We’ll get G-Unit back together!'”
This news is only interesting in that I truly believe that 50 Cent will change his tune really quick if his next album flops. If 50 doesn’t want to do it, I think it would be great if Game, Banks, Buck and Yayo got together and released a group effort without 50 Cent.
In related 50 Cent news, it appears as though he is working with feature producer Randall Emmett and Imagine TV to sell a animated series loosely based on his childhood.
The series, written by Carl Jones, is expected to be given a pilot or presentation order, focusing on “a mischievous but well-meaning boy who often tangles with his eccentric family and neighborhood.” In addition to Fif, Jones and Emmett, executive producers on the project include Imagine TV’s Brian Grazer, Francie Calfo and Andrew Jameson.
If any executive at any major networks actually pick this up then they should be fired on the spot. While this may have been a decent idea when 50 was at his peak of popularity, I don’t see how anybody cares about his enough to tune in to relive his childhood. While I give 50 props for thinking outside the box in terms of marketing his brand, this is a really bad idea.
Donald Trump Set To Sue Mac Miller
It seems that Mac Miller cannot catch a break. After settling a lawsuit from Lord Finesse based on a mixtape track, Miller now apparently has to deal with Donald Trump, who is threatening legal action over the song “Donald Trump”.
The business tycoon took to Twitter earlier today to blast the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania rapper, defying earlier statements that he was “proud of him” and that he is the “new Eminem.”
“Little @macmiller, you illegally used my name for your song ‘Donald Trump’ which now has over 75 million hits,” he wrote. “Little @macmiller, I want the money not the plaque you gave me! Little @macmiller, I’m now going to teach you a big boy lesson about lawsuits and finance. You ungrateful dog! Little @macmiller—I have more hair than you do and there’s a slight age difference.”
Trump, known for his Twitter antics, previously praised Mac for the song back in August 2011. “A lot of people are calling me about the Mac Miller rap song. Now, it’s named ‘Donald Trump.’ Maybe you should pay me a lot of money, but it just did over 20 million people, tuning into Mac Miller,” he said. “So in one way, I’m proud of him. I haven’t actually seen the language, it’s a little hard to understand on the song itself. Probably, it’s not the cleanest language you’ve ever heard, but this kid is the new Eminem. Everybody says he’s fantastic. Let’s see what it is. But the ‘Donald Trump’ song just hit over 20 million, that’s not so bad. I’m very proud of him.”
I don’t have a background in law, but I don’t think in reality that Donald Trump has any base to his lawsuit. The song did not defame Trump in any manner and its not like people could have confused the track for being something that was backed by the Donald. It is somewhat confusing to me and in reality I fully expect the issue to just disappear…
Release Dates & Album Updates
Some album updates this week starting with Drake who released his latest single, “Started From The Bottom”. After listening to the track, I have to say that I like it more than most of the tracks from his last album.
There is no real date for a new Drake album to be released, with his last album being released in November 2011. While the single may point to the fact that a Drake album may be on its way, I would not hold my breath as Young Money/Cash Money artists usually have many delays in their album releases.
It appears like an OutKast reunion is more and more likely with every passing week, as last week Big Boi stated they may have soemthign special to commemorate the 20-year anniversary of their Outkast debut Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, and might have something special in store to commemorate the milestone. During an interview with Power 106’s Big Boy’s Neighborhood, Sir Lucious Left Foot said that he and Three Stacks are “discussing some things” and that once they decide on what they plan to do, they will make a public announcement.
“We been kind of discussing some things. Once we map it out, we’ll make an announcement. But we’ll see,” he said. “It’s 20 years, man. We started out at 15, 16 years old. We made our first album when we were 17 years old. Twenty-five million records later, seven Grammys, I feel great.”
“We been making music so long together that our catalog really speaks for itself,” he said. “So if you want to branch out and do other stuff and catch different vibes, that’s cool. But it’s bigger than music. I just think of him as a serial killer, because everything he get on is sharp or whatever. When he do these records, he’ll come and be like, ‘Hey man, I’ma play something for you.’ He’ll come to my house and I’ll hear the stuff before it comes out.”
An Outkast reunion would be great and would likely be a top seller, but the only real issue with it happening has to do with the fact that Andre 3000 is really not that into making new music at the moment. Over the last couple years, Andre 3000 has been somewhat out of the spotlight only making very rare special appearance on records. It looks like Big Boi is itching to go, but Andre 3000 is the one holding everything up.
