Hip Hop Herald 02.13.12: Grammy Results, King Gordy Shot, Album News From Eminem, More
Welcome one and all to the Hip Hop Herald. The column will deal with anything related to hip hop whether it be underground, mainstream, or the new-age pop infused rap (you know the stuff Timberlake and Timbaland make). We will cover news, opinions, release dates as well as feature some music and of course videos.
Be for we start, be sure to check out some of our exclusive interviews as well as follow me on Twitter.
This weeks music intro comes from this weeks Grammy awards and features the performance by Justin Timberlake, which includes a special appearance Jay-Z!
The annual Grammy awards were held last Sunday and we have the full list of winners below. It a pretty timid night, and I have highlighted the rap/hip hop related awards categories. Jay-Z and Kayne mostly cleaned up, which was to be expected and I guess was somewhat warranted given the list of other nominees. I say this every year, but the Grammy committee is so out of touch with hip hop music that the whole category is a joke. The fact that Drake won rap album of the year for Take Care was laughable (but I guess it is slightly better than 2 Chainz winning).

King Gordy Shot Multiple Times
In some sad news, Detroit rapper King Gord is in the hospital following an alleged robbery in which the rapper was shot 5 times. Not much has been revealed regarding Gordy or his current condition, with the only real updates coming from Tweets from Bizarre.
“King gordy.. get well my nigga.. I’m praying for u… I’m on way back know to the d,” wrote Bizarre.
Gordy is a artist that does not get a lot of press due to his content, so it is a little sad that he has to get shot to make headlines. While I have been somewhat indifferent to Gordy in that I don’t love his music but don’t hate it either, hopefully he is able to make a full recovery and get back to making the strange and bizarre music that he is known for.
Release Dates & Album Updates
Quite a bit of new album updates this week, as we will start with Lupe Fiasco, who announced on the red carpet of the Grammy’s that his new album will be titled Tetsuo & Youth. Lupe stated that he has put the music he had planned for the sequel to Food & Liquor 2 is the safe so to speak. Lupe stated:
“A lot of the music we did for it, we’re just kind of putting in the safe. We’re starting with a new album that’s called Tetsuo & Youth. It’s a different angle and twist,” he said.
Tetsuo is a reference to the 1989 Japanese cult classic Tetsuo: The Iron Man. Fiasco’s last album, Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Pt.1, was nominated for Best Rap Album at this year’s Grammy Awards and lost to Drake’s Take Care.
Lupe Fiasco is a crazy artist in my eyes, in that he is never sure of what is wants to do, changes his mind on a whim, always tries to force his opinion on you and then blames everyone when things do not work out. But he sure can rap…
After most people had dismissed the idea as just a rumour, Big Sean commented again that G.O.O.D. Music’s Cruel Winter compilation album is still coming out.
“Yeah, I hear it’s coming,” said Sean in an interview with Jenny Boom Boom about the project. “I don’t want to spill the beans. I’m pretty sure, I’m pretty sure you’re gonna get it soon, sooner than you think.”
“You know, who knows?” added Sean, before running down a list of projects G.O.O.D. Music fans can expect. “It’s gonna be an awesome project and like I said, you’re gonna get my project, you’re gonna get Pusha T’s album later on this year, Teyana Taylor’s album, Common.”
I don’t have much doubt that this project will be released, mainly because it does not take much effort, just a couple verses from each artists, and it will sell well. Hell if Kayne searched his music vault he could probably release the album tomorrow if he wanted…
It looks like a ballpark release date has been given for the new Eminem album, which, by all accounts, will drop this year, with the tentative date being around Memorial day.
During an interview with Billboard.com, Shady Records president Paul Rosenberg said that Em will release the project post-Memorial Day and that listeners can expect it soon.
“We fully expect to be releasing a new Eminem album in 2013. He’s been working on it for some time,” he said. “It’s safe to say that it will be post-Memorial Day at some point, but we’re not exactly sure when. We’ve got some dates locked in for him to perform live in Europe in August, so we’re trying to see what else lines up.”
This makes complete sense as Eminem will be prepping for a world tour, and the end of Summer is usually a good time for new music to drop. Eminem is the master of marketing in that he is always sure to get out of the spotlight for a large amount of time before re-appearing and dropping his album. He is a master of not getting himself over-exposed unlike 50 Cent and Lil Wayne. When Eminem drops a new album, the world is ready and wanting another Eminem album.
That does it in terms of new album news. As always the rest of the dates can be seen below:
