Hip Hop Herald 10.17.12: Nelly’s Bus Raided, BET Award Show Cypher Reviews, More
Welcome one and all to the Hip Hop Herald. The column will deal with anything related to hip hop whether it be underground, mainstream, or the new-age pop infused rap (you know the stuff Timberlake and Timbaland make). We will cover news, opinions, release dates as well as feature some music and of course videos.
Be for we start, be sure to check out some of our exclusive interviews as well as follow me on Twitter.
We will start off this week off with a funny commercial featuring Snoop Dogg, covering his hit track “Drop It Like It’s Hot” for the snack hot pockets. Its actually a good commercial and a good use of the track and Snoop.News
Nelly Involved In Drug Bust
Main news this week, involves Nelly and the fact that his tour bus was raided by police and herion, marijuana, and a loaded gun were discovered on board. After the incident, Nelly went on record to point the blame at a member of his staff, stating that he had no idea those materials were on board his tour bus.
“Certain stuff we can say and certain stuff you can’t say until all that is cleared,” he said. “We got pulled over and things were noticed as far as K-9 abilities and things went in stages from there. It was kind of wild…When they asked, ‘Whose is this,’ I can tell you who it ain’t.”
“It ain’t a good spot to come through with anything you ain’t supposed to have,” Nelly said. “Everything happened so fast. It’s one of those situations where you’re squinting your eyes like, Is this really happening?…There was no way I would jeopardize what Nelly has built for the last 14-15 years being in the situation I was accused.”
This is a tough situation, in that it is hard to determine who the materials actually belonged to or who brought them on board, however, it is still hard to believe that Nelly had no idea that the materials were on board. At the end of the day it is his bus, and he should be responsible for what is on board. If members of his staff are bringing banned substances on board, and putting his career in jeopardy, he should take a closer look at who he is hiring as staff.
It feels more and more to me that Nelly and company have chosen a fall guy, and it would be very unfortunate if someone else had to take the fall and possible jail time for something Nelly did.
The BET Awards show was last week, and one of the highlights is the great BET Cyphers that are put on this year was no different, and we have the complete lineup of Cyphers to go through.
We will start out with the “Man with the Iron Fists Cypher” which featured RZA on the boards and Angel Haze, Joey Bada$$, Driicky Graham, Childish Gambino, A$AP Rocky spitting verses.
Almost everyone did a great job with this Cypher, however, I have to think that Childish Gambino gets the nod barely edging out Driicky Graham. Angel Hazes came really hard as well and I was surprised as I have not really heard of her before. ASAP Rocky was by far the worst and somewhat got exposed compared to the rest of the emcees in the group.
Next we have the Cypher which featured Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, Ab Soul, and Sarkodie.
Talib Kweli absolutely killed this cypher again showing that he is still one of the best on the mic today. While I was a little disappointed by Jean Graes verse.
Next we had the “Grand Hustle Cypher” (T.I., B.o.B, Iggy Azalea, Chip, Trae Tha Truth)
While this cypher was good, there was really no stand out emcee. They all came correct, but no one really stole the show.
Next we had the “RAW” Cypher which featured Mac Miller, Mystikal, Schoolboy Q, Hopsin and Sprite Hot 16 Winner Jay Bird the Purdi Boi.
I have to say that Jay Bird The Purdi Boi really came hard and I may actually give him the edge in this cypher. I will actually look for some of his material after this cypher. While Mac Miller wasn’t great, he was not the worse person in this cypher, as that nod would go to Mysitkal. How in the hell did he get invited to his?
Moving on to the main two cypher this year, we first start with the “West Coast Cypher” which featured Snoop Dogg, E40, DJ Quik, Xzibit, Kurupt, Kendrik Lamar, YG.
I feel that his cypher had the best mix of old and new artists and really everyone came hard. Probably have to give the nod to E-40, who really came with some good lines here, but again all artists gave it a good go.
Lastly we had the Ruff Ryders Cypher which featured Mook, Cassidy, Eve, DMX
This would have to be the most disappointing cypher of me. DMX gave a weak verse that was mostly dubbed out due to him cursing. He really took a long time to really say nothing. Maybe him and Mystikal should be in a Cypher together next time?
Well, all in all the cyphers exposed me to some new artists that I will check out and the West Coast Cypher really seemed to fire on all cylinders. Hopefully they BET can keep coming through with more big name artists as well as some up and comers in next year’s addition.
Release Dates & Album Updates
Mac Miller has announced that his next album will be released in 2013, with the project being titled Watching Movies With the Sound Off. Additionally he has been hard at work with Pharrell Williams on a collaborative EP, titled Pink Slime, which should be released by the end of the year. Miller is an interesting topic, as I feel he really is a mediocre rapper at best, but he seems to have given homage to enough hip hop legends to gain the approval and co-sign of a lot of big names. Maybe these two albums will surprise me and we will be able to see the growth of Mac Miller.
E-40 continues to produce material at an alarmingly fast rate, with two new albums with Too Short being released on November 6th. 40 recently released the tracklistings for the two albums which are as follows:

8. Bout My Money (feat. Turf Talk)
9. Say I (feat. Wiz Khalifa)

12. One Foot (feat. Sugafree)
13. Check That Bitch
15. Lemme See You Twerk (feat. Dolla Will & Decadez)
17. Cali (feat. Wifey & DJ Upgrade)
E-40 is coming off a great showing on the BET Cyphers and both albums look good in that they stay true to both 40 and Too Short in terms of content and guest spots.
We have a somewhat slow week in terms of releases this week, but a big week next week with releases from Vinnie Paz, Styles of Beyond and Kendrick Lamar. Hearing the recent singles from Kendrick Lamar have anticipation from his album building, as well I was given a promo copy of the Styles of Beyond record, and can tell you that it is a great album. It is a shame that the record company shelved the Styles of Beyond album for so long, but we should have a full review of that release next week, but I encourage any fans of the group to pick up the album, which is being self released, to show the big record labels that they really don’t know at all what fans want.
