Hip Hop Herald 12.05.12: Ryan Leslie, Nicki Minaj/Hot 97 Beef, Dr. Dre, More
Welcome one and all to the Hip Hop Herald. The column will deal with anything related to hip hop whether it be underground, mainstream, or the new-age pop infused rap (you know the stuff Timberlake and Timbaland make). We will cover news, opinions, release dates as well as feature some music and of course videos.
Be for we start, be sure to check out some of our exclusive interviews as well as follow me on Twitter.
We start this week off with a little holiday cheer from none other then DMX, as he performs his rendition of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. This video is hilarious and it is amusing to see just how into it DMX gets.
Ryan Leslie Ordered To Pay $1 Million Reward
Back in 2010 Ryan Leslie had his laptop stolen, which had all of his recordings on it. Wanting to not lose everything, Leslie offered up a $1 million reward for anyone that found and returned the laptop. Wouldn’t you know it, a German man tried to cash in on the reward by returning the laptop to Leslie who then took back his reward offer.
Ryan Leslie gave an account of the events that transpired. “Eventually, somebody did return that backpack to me. And when I looked in the hard drive to access everything that I had lost, the music just wasn’t there. The hard drive wouldn’t mount. I couldn’t access anything. A year later, the same gentleman [who returned my backpack] – I don’t know if it was because he misunderstood what the million dollars was for – he filed a lawsuit in federal court in New York City, demanding that I pay a million dollars for the music I never got back.”
In the court have since made their ruling siding with the German man and ordering Leslie to pay the reward. Armin Augestein the man who found computer while walking his dog spoke on the jury’s decision:
“I’m very happy … that the American judicial system, which is so totally different from ours, functioned so well with a jury that are not professionals and are laymen,” he said in German through his lawyer Steven Thal. “No one forced him to make an offer of so much money for a finder’s fee… It seems like he believes that that which he promised, he doesn’t have to live up to.”
Leslie plans to appeal the decision. This is a tricky situation and I have to somewhat side with the jury and the German man who found the laptop. Leslie issued a reward for the laptop returned. He never placed in stipulations on the condition of the laptop or whether the reward is only good if all his music was still on the hard drive. I fully believe that Leslie would have not given the reward whether all his recordings were on the laptop or not.
This story is just more evidence that you should always back up your work…
Nicki Minaj Demands Hot 97 Stop Playing Her Music
Nicki Minaj is back on the attack against Hot 97 again, months after this years Summer Jam fiasco with the station, Nicki has announced that she doesn’t want the station playing anymore of her music.
Hot 97’s director, Ebro, explained that the most recent tiff with Minaj began after he said that Rosenberg’s comments ruined her career when her rap-heavy Pink Friday Roman Reloaded: The Re-Up only moved 36,000 units upon its release. According to Ebro, the YMCMB starlet called him from overseas, insulted him and demanded he never play her music on air again.
“I said, ‘Rosenberg ruined Nicki Minaj’s career’ – evidence suggests based on this Re-Up release, the things [Rosenberg] said about her being pop and selling out and making that pop music came back to haunt her,” he said. “Now, she puts six rap records on this album and it didn’t sell…I get the phone call, the international number pops up, I answer the call, it’s my friend Nicki Minaj, who then starts to proclaim how I’m fake. She used every woman’s stab she could – ‘I thought you were a man, you’re a cornball, I thought we were friends, you’re fake, everyone told me you were fake’…I said, ‘Nicki, I’m helping you. I’m keeping you in the Hip Hop conversation. This Hip Hop thing’s a competition; you’re either ringing, or you’re not, and just like I said yesterday, i love you, boo and I’ll dust you off and make sure this thing is popping off again.’ And she goes, ‘Don’t ever play my music again’…of course we are [still playing Nicki Minaj], I love Nicki Minaj.”
This is a strange story and if Nicki Minaj thinks that Hot 97 has that much stroke in terms of rap music and artists popularity, she is crazy. Traditional radio is somewhat of a dying medium, and even though Hot 97 is heard by a large number of listeners, the rest of the country and the world does not have access to it and does not hear their opinions. Minaj should just leave well enough alone. There are many other reasons why Nicki’s latest album was not flying off the charts, mainly the lack of a big hit single, as well as the quality of the tracks and that fact that it seemed like a quick cash grab to coincide with her American Idol publicity.
Dr. Dre Is Highest Paid Musician
Forbes magazine has released the list of the Highest Paid Musicians of 2012, and somewhat surprisingly Dr. Dre is leading the list making $110 million. Off the top of my head I would have never picked Dre, but after considering that most of those earning came from his Beats Headphones line, it makes much more sense. While Dre has been quiet on the making music aspects, he has stayed busy running his label and continuing to make Beats Headphones the top headphones in the world.

As well we have yet another release date for 50 Cents Street King Immortal, which now looks to be released on February 26. The album has had many many release dates and who knows whether this date will stick or not. Regardless 50 has managed to keep his name in the media with his recent beef with Floyd Mayweather, who he claims owes him $2 million.
50 recently explained the beef and debt to Power 106:
“[Mayweather] changed his mind…as he was actually going in to jail, he asked me to help him with Mayweather Promotions,” Fif recalled. “As he actually got in and I took a look, I realized there is no Mayweather Promotions: there’s no LLC, there’s no seals, there’s no ‘incorporated’…technically, Floyd is a Golden Boy fighter [for Oscar De La Hoya's promotion firm]. He fights on every Golden Boy card, they do all the footwork…so when he says, ‘Help me with Mayweather Promotions,’ and it’s not there, I go, ‘Okay, I know what he means: he wants me to put it together for him.’ So I do TMT Promotions, I get it all the way together…he comes home, and there’s the, ‘Let’s get Floyd back in pocket’ campaign that goes on, where there’s $300,000 chains being bought and buying him the new Lambourghini…and I’m sitting there going, ‘When are you going to give me the money?’…It’s about [$2 million owed] at that point. When he finally does bring up the actual situation, he acted like he didn’t know anything. Like, ‘I didn’t tell y’all to do that.'”
He added, “That’s not Floyd [on Twitter or Instagram dissing me]; Floyd don’t Tweet…he’s got somebody next to him. See, everybody around him is co-dependent, so they gonna roll with what he says regardless…they’ll tell him what to say. As soon as he gets confused, he’s gonna go, ‘Okay, okay, um, just call out [50 Cent].'”
