December 18, 2012 | Posted by Joseph Lee

In an interview with Metal Hammer (via NME) Metallica promised that their next album will have more guitar solos. Drummer Lars Ulrich said the new material is “heavy”, “energetic” and “crazy”.

They will release the follow-up to Death Magnetic in 2014.

Ulrich said: “The stuff that we were banging out yesterday, it felt heavy, it felt energetic, it was loud, it was fast, it was rocking, it was crazy. The snare drum was on there and there were guitar solos, in case anybody was wondering. What we’re doing now certainly sounds like a continuation of where we left off four years ago.’

Rick Rubin will produce the album. Ulrich said of this: “I love Rick, we all love Rick. We’re in touch with Rick constantly. We’ll see where it goes.

Metallica recently released their live DVD Quebec Magnetic recently, and announced that they have set up their own record label, Blackened Recordings. They have taken ownership of their master recordings, including every current album and video they recorded. They will release all future albums under the label. This is the end of their relationship with Warner Music Group, which lasted for 28 years.

In a statement, the band said: “You may have heard us say it once or twice or a thousand times before, but it’s always been about us taking control of all things.

Metallica’s last album was in 2011, when they worked with Lou Reed for Lulu.
