Prince Not Happy About Maroon 5′s Cover of “Kiss”

January 26, 2013 | Posted by Jeffrey Harris

Billboard spoke with Prince who is not happy about Maroon 5′s cover of his 1986 hit “Kiss.”

According to Prince, the version of “Kiss” by Maroon 5 adds nothing new to his classic track. Regarding the cover he said: “I do pay performance royalties on others’ songs I perform live, but I’m not recording these songs and putting them up for sale. Why do we need to hear another cover of a song someone else did? Art is about building a new foundation, not just laying something on top of what’s already there.”

Prince also spoke about Madonna who he dated in the 1980′s. When asked about the end of his 20-year relationship with Warner Bros. Records in 1996, he said, “It was also about Madonna. She was getting paid, but at the same time we were selling more records and selling out concerts on multiple nights.”

Prince released a new single, “Screw Driver”, last week. There are rumors he will go on a wider tour this year, though no dates are scheduled.
