REM’s “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It” Had a Huge Increase Of Sales Last Week
Billboard reports that REM’s “It’s The End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” had a huge increase in sales and airplay last week thanks to 12/21/12, the Mayan-predicted date for the end of the world.
The song originally hit #69 on the Hot 100 in 1988. It climbed this past week from 3,000 to 19,000 (up 612%). It re-entered the Rock Digital Songs chart at #18 and Alternative Digital Songs at #14. Airplay also increased. It had 135 plays in the US on December 21 among the 1,200 stations tracked for the Hot 100. That’s up from 50 on December 20 and 18 on December 19.
KENZ Salt Lake City played the song eight times on December 21, and didn’t play it at all earlier in the week. KENZ uses the nickname “101.9 The End.”
Calgary, Alberta Canada alternative station CFEX (X92.9) played the song “156 times in a row by our count” last week, according to the station’s Twitter account.
