Taylor Swift Gets #1 On Record-Breaking Billboard Digital Songs Chart

January 3, 2013 | Posted by Joseph Lee

Taylor Swift also took #1 on the Billboard Digital Songs Chart with “I Knew You Were Trouble”, topping a record-breaking week for the chart. 55.74 million songs were sold last week, which is the largest week for download song sales ever. It beats the previous record of 47.73 million on the Dec. 28, 2008 edition of the chart. The sales week is due to music download gift cards being redeemed after Christmas. The week before, 25.50 million songs were sold.

Last year in the first full week after Christmas, there were 46.42 million songs sold. The week before that, there were 38.25 million sold. However, 2011 had gift card impact spread into two separate weeks, while 2012 had most of it in one. This is because Christmas fell on a Sunday in 2011, the final day of Soundscan’s tracking week. In 2012, Christmas was on a Tuesday, which means all of the gift card impact is on the week that ended on December 30. The post-Christmas week digital song sales bring the year’s total to 1.336 billion, up 5% compared to 2011 (1.271 billion).

Here is the top five largest unit gains among the top-selling songs:

1. Taylor Swift – “I Knew You Were Trouble” (221,000 last week; 361,000 unit gain)
2. PSY – “Gangnam Style” (116,000 last week; 284,000 unit gain)
3. Bruno Mars – “Locked Out Of Heaven” (226,000 last week; 271,000 unit gain)

5. Rihanna – “Diamonds” (141,000 last week, 224,000 unit gain)

A record 48 songs sold over 100,000 downloads last week. Only ten did last week. Until now, the record was 39 songs selling over 100,000 in a given week (December 26, 2010).

Taylor Swift’s “Trobule” takes #1 with 582,000 sold, up 163%. This is the fourth-largest sales week ever for a song and the second highest for a song that wasn’t debuting. Flo Rida’s “Right Round” still has the record when it debuted with 636,000 on February 28, 2009. At #2 is Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (623,000; 9/1/12) followed by Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok (610,000; Christmas 2009). “Trouble” is one of seven songs to sell over 300,000 downloads.
