The Hip Hop Herald 03.16.11: Young Buck To Jail, Raekwon & Rza, 50 Cent Has No Class And More

March 16, 2011 | Posted by Bill Wannop

Welcome one and all to the resurrection of the Hip hop herald. The column will deal with anything related to hip hop whether it be underground, mainstream, or the new-age pop infused rap (you know the stuff Timberlake and Timbaland make). We will cover news, opinions, release dates as well as feature some music and of course videos. So without any further ado, let’s start things off right with a banging freestyle courtesy of Apathy:

Music Intro

Apathy, who has been on the come up for a minute, completely destroyed that DJ Premier beat. Apathy is currently nearing the completion of his album ‘Honkey Kong’ which features original production from DJ Premier.

Young Buck is Claiming Innocence on Felony Gun Charges
More bad news for former G-Unit member Young Buck as he is facing a 10 year bid after being indicted on Monday, March 7th. The Tennessee native was found to be in possession of a .40 caliber pistol and ammunition, which is a serious offence for a convicted felon. Buck has pled not guilty to the charges and has been released on $100,000 bond after surrendering his passport.

Buck has had nothing but trouble these past couple years, from being convicted for stabbing a man who punched Dr. Dre at the 2004 Vibe Awards, to his beef with 50 Cent, where he basically had his albums shelved for years. Buck has some great talent and hopefully this is just a big misunderstanding and he can get back to focusing on music. If Buck is found guilty he will likely be remembered for all the stupid things he did in order to throw his career away instead of his music.

Foxy Brown To Release First Double Female Hip Hop Album

Word has come out from Foxy brown’s camp that her album that has been three years in the making will be the first ever double album released by a female emcee. The double album will feature one album of hardcore hip hop while the other album will be more Dance-hall rock. The album titled “Black Roses” still does not have an official release date but Foxy is said to be slaving in the studio to get it completed

Brown really has been the silent female act recently amidst all the Nicki Minaj/Lil Kim squabbles and may in fact be the one to watch out for if her album actually drops sometime this year. Nicki Minaj has got the spotlight pointed directly at female emcees again so hopefully Brown can capitalize on that resurgent popularity and put out a good album. It remains to be seen if she is able to pull off a double album, but I am always excited to see more female rappers adding to the genre.

Raekwon Still Wants Rza Production On Future Wu-Tang Albums

Despite the release of his recent album Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang which was a conceited effort by Raekwon to prove that the Wu-Tang can survive without any help from the Rza, Raekwon stated that he would still want to have Rza produce on future Wu-Tang albums:

“We would definitely have to govern it,” Rae said, in regards to RZA taking the production reigns. “But more or less, we would definitely have to seek other ways of making it more classical. It’s just all about RZA being able to not work as hard as he has to.”

That is a sigh of relief for many fans after the recent conflicts between the two stemming from the release of the latest Wu-Tang album in 2007.Raekwon verbally attacked Rza after the release of “8 Diagrams” and claimed that the group just laid down there vocals, after which Rza flipped the script and changed the beats. In any event it is good to see that even with the critical acclaim of his recent album Shaolin vs Wu-Tang that Raekwon is open to work again with Rza. While Rza can be a little outlandish with his beats sometimes, there is no denying that he was the major force that really brought the Wu-Tang clan to the forefront, with his classic Wu-Tang sounding beats.

Nas on Nelly Furtado’s New Album
Multi faceted singer Nelly Furtado announced that she has enlisted Nas for a track on her upcoming album. Furtado has been involved in some of the biggest songs in hip hop working with Timbaland as well as Justin Timberlake, so it should be interesting to see what she and Nas can come up with. Even though I am usually disappointed, I am always excited when a great rapper gets the chance to guest on a mainstream type song, with the thought that they can come correct and open more people’s eyes to the world of hip hop.

In other Nas news, in an interview done while on tour, Nas stated that he is eager to work more with Damian Marley, and that he has started work on his next album, which as of right now is untitled. Nas also stated that the work he has put into the new album has pushed back any possibility of seeing a Lost Tapes 2 in the near future.

Fifty Cent Will Do Anything For Attention

In a bit of news that proves what 50 Cent will do to keep his name in the headlines, 50 tweeted some distasteful remarks about the devastation in Japan. 50 tweeted the following:
“Its all good Till b*tches see there christian louboutins floating down da street shit gone get crazy.”

“Wave will hit 8am them crazy white boys gonna try to go surfing.”

“Look this is very serious people I had to evacuate all my hoe’s from LA, Hawaii and Japan. I had to do it. Lol”

He realized later that he was being offensive and tweeted:

“Nah this is nuts but what can anyone do about it. Let’s pray for anyone who has lost someone.”

“Some of my tweets are ignorant I do it for shock value. Hate it or love it. I’m cool either way 50cent”

It is one thing to attack any rapper and celebrity out there with a hope of getting media attention, but to make fun of the disaster for shock value is completely different and out of line. 50 Cent might be finally realizing that his best years are behind him, and he is doing anything he can to try and get the spotlight pointed back his way. 50 Cent even went as far as to allude to a possible beef between himself and mentor Dr. Dre, stating that he may in fact record a diss aimed at Dre. When asked for a comment Dr. Dre had no clue of the alleged beef.

Fifty Cent is said to be currently in the lab working with David Guetta on a track for his on again, off again album Black Magic. Guetta has helmed some of the biggest dance hits in recent years working with Kid Cudi, Flo Rida, Akon and the Black Eyed Peas, so if anyone can he is the man to bring Fifty back into the clubs. For the good of mankind and rap in general let’s hope that Guetta produces a flop.

Tracklisting Revealed for Snoop Dogg’s Doggumentary

The latest Snoop album is set to be released at the end of the month and the track listing to the CD has finally been revealed. Originally slated to be named Doggystyle 2, Snoop changed the name of the album to Doggumentary, most likely to not turn off fans of the classic original album, if his sound is more mainstream friendly.

1. Toyz N Da Hood (Feat. Bootsy Collins)
2. The Way Life Used to Be
3. My Own Way (Feat. Denaun Porter)
4. Wonder What It Do
5. My Func House
6. Peer Pressure
7. I Don’t Need No Bi*ch (Feat. Devin The Dude & Kobe)
8. Platinum (Feat. R. Kelly)
9. Boom (Feat. T-Pain) (Prod. Scott Storch)
10. El Lay (Feat. Marty James)
11. We Rest In Cali
12. Gangbang Rookie (Feat. Pilot)
13. This Weed Iz Mine (Feat. Wiz Khalifa)
14. Wet
15. Take U Home (Feat. Too $hort, Kokane & Daz Dillinger)
16. Sumthing Like This Night (Feat. Gorillaz)
17. Superman (Feat. Willie Nelson)
18. Eyez Closed (Feat. Kanye West & John Legend)
19. Raised In Da Hood
20. It’s D Only Thang
21. Cold Game (Feat. LaToya Williams)

From the look of the track listing the album appears to be more of the pop-rap Snoop Dogg of recent years and less of the gangsta Snoop from Doggystyle so it is probably good that he changed the name. While I am not expecting much from this album based on his recent releases Snoop usually has a couple bangers, so I am interested in hearing Gangbang Rookie (Feat. Pilot), This Weed Iz Mine (Feat. Wiz Khalifa), Take U Home (Feat. Too $hort, Kokane & Daz Dillinger), and Eyez Closed (Feat. Kanye West & John Legend)

Tracklisting Revealed For Wiz Khalifa’s Album Rolling Papers

The album is set to hit stores March 29.

The tracklisting for Rolling Papers is as follows:

“When I’m Gone”
“On My Level” — ft. Too $hort
“Black and Yellow”
“Roll Up”
“Hopes & Dreams”
“Wake Up”
“The Race”
“Star of the Show” — ft. Chevy Woods
“No Sleep”
“Get Your Sh**”
“Top Floor”
“Fly Solo”
“Rooftops” — ft. Curren$y

It surprises me somewhat that there is only 3 guests listed and none of them are real big stars in the rap world. This could indicate one of two things: either Wiz and his label believe that his album can stand on its own, and there was no need to include high profile guests to help bear some of the load, or Khalifa and label believe too much in his own hype and with 2 huge singles on the radio (Black & Yellow, Roll Up) didn’t feel the need to waste the money on guests. It will be interesting to see which way it goes, and I am interested in hearing what Khalifa can put out.
