TeamUKKOT14BlocPartyKOT14
King of Trios 2014 First Round Match
TTeam UK (Mark Andrews, Pete Dunne & Damian Dunne) vs. The Bloc Party (The Proletariat Boar of Moldova, Mr. Azerbaijan & Prakash Sabar)

Azerbaijan and Andrews exchange wristlocks. Azerbaijan shoulder blocks Andrews to the mat. He pulls the straps down but turns into a dropkick from Andrews. Boar and Damian tag in. Damian’s running shoulder tackles do nothing. He tries a wheelbarrow but gets planted into the mat. The Boar drops him with a Fame-Asser. Team UK takes him down with some tandem offense. Sabar comes in but gets caught in a Romero Special from Andrews. He launches Sabar into a powerslam from Pete. Azerbaijan knees Pete from the apron. Boar holds onto him. Sabar accidentally hits the Boar. He does however give him a spinwheel kick, allowing the Bloc Party to take control. Azerbaijan mimics a lot of Road Dogg offense during this period. Sabar however misses a Bronco Buster. Pete gives him a pump-handle Complete Shot and tags out to Andrews. He comes in with a springboard crossbody to Azerbaijan. He follows with a standing twisting splash. Boar breaks the cover. Team UK hits Boar with double enzuigiri’s and a dropkick. Damian hits him with a running knee strike for two. Pete and Andrews take Azerbaijan and Sabar to the floor. Boar slams Damian off of his shoulders.Azerbaijan gives Damian a pump-handle slam. Sabar comes off the top with a splash for two. Damian drops Sabar and Azerbaijan with a DDT/Complete Shot combo. Pete throws some clotheslines at Azerbaijan. He runs up the ropes to avoid a corner attack. Boar however Gores Pete, then Damian. Andrews avoids a Gore sending Borar to the floor. He follows with a tope con hilo. Pete enzuigiri’s Azerbaijan out. Sabar spin kicks Pete and gets two with a small package. Pete uppercuts Sabar into a German suplex from Damian. Andrews capitalizes with a shooting star press for the pin at 10:39. Team UK impressed right out of the gate and brought energy and excitement; exactly what you want in an opening match. Azerbaijan’s Road Dogg offense was pretty amusing. The Bloc Party were serviceable foes. **½

The Shard says he hasn’t been the same since he lost the Campeonatos de Parejas. If there’s ever a time to shine, it’s tonight. Jigsaw says The Shard needs to keep his head in the game. 17 tells Jigsaw that he decides what they’re doing. Jigsaw and Shard concede.

GEKIDO jump Knight Eye for the Pirate Guy before the bell. Kimberlee and Roger are pitched to the floor as 17 puts the boots to Steel. After a suplex he tags in Shard. He nails a running leg lariat for two. Roger rolls Shard into a low enzuigiri. He sends Shard out with a Code Breaker and follows with a suicide dive. 17 and Kimberlee trade some vicious forearms. She takes him down with a tornado DDT. She spin kicks Jigsaw as he runs in. Kimberlee comes off the top with a headscissors! Steel and Roger joust Jigsaw in the corner. Shard knocks down Kimberlee. He avoids a joust and German suplexes Steel and Roger simultaneously! Kimberlee headscissors Shard to the floor. 17 cuts off Kimberlee’s dive with a palm strike. He rocks her with forearms as she lay on the mat. His GEKIDO teammates help him keep Kimberlee at bay. The Shard’s hubris gets the best of him as his toying with Kimberlee allows her to fire up. Shard catches her with a superkick for two. She also kicks out of a powerbomb. She sends Shard to the floor and backslides 17 for two. 17 DDT’s Steel from the apron, allowing Kimberlee to get in a boot. Roger tags in. He forearms Jigsaw and knocks him down with a running forearm and dropkick. He enzuigiri’s Jigsaw from the apron and comes in with a springboard crossbody for two. Jigsaw wants to tag out but 17 won’t allow him. Roger goes to Walk the Plank. Jigsaw blocks it but eats a knee to and running boot to the face. 17 trips Roger. He commands Jigsaw to put Roger away. He sets up for the brainbuster. Roger shoves Jigsaw to the corner. Jigsaw gives him a bicycle kick. He stops himself on a superkick! Shard trips Jigsaw and brings him to the floor. 17 trips Jigsaw. He locks on an overhead wristlock and wraps his legs around the arm, causing Roger to tap out at 14:25. Kimberlee and Roger looked great in this match. Kimberlee and 17’s exchange and her taking a beatdown during the heat segment were highlights of the match. I also enjoyed them playing up the fact that Jigsaw and Roger are brothers without being too overt. This was a great re-debut for Knight Eye and a nice way to rehab the GEKIDO who seemingly have lost some steam. ***

After the match Roger tells Jigsaw that he’s not his brother. 17 and Shard left earlier, so Jigsaw is left alone in the corner dejected.

SpiritSquadKOT14OdditoriumKOT14
King of Trios 2014 First Round Match

Johnny throws punches at Grimsly, taking him down with a flying forearm. He mocks Qefka as he comes in, then dropkicks him to the floor. Bodhi airplane spins Johnny into a suplex. Kenny drops Bodhi with a spinebuster. Grimsly enzuigiri’s Kenny. He goes for the Bed of Nails on Mikey but eats a tornado kick from Johnny. Kenny and Mikey hit a tandem top rope legdrop/splash for the pin at 8:04. Grimsly proved himself to be the shining star of his team. This was really all about the Spirit Squad though who successfully endeared themselves to the crowd. The wrestling itself was alright. **

SpectralEnvoyKOT14TheFloodKOT14

Volgar breaks the pin. Hallowicked drives his shoulder into Volgar’s mid-section repeatedly. He super snapmares him into a Perfect neck snap from Mantis. Hallowicked lands a Swanton Bomb. Frightmare hits Kneecolepsy. Jacobs and Kingston drag Volgar out. Hallowicked and Mantis dive onto Jacobs and Volgar. Frightmare tope con hilo’s onto Kingston. Troll wants a dive, forgetting he is tied up to the post. Deucalion and Delirious come out. Deucalion sicks Delirious onto Mantis. Delirious sends Mantis back into the ring. Kingston hits the Backfist to the Future. Jacobs gets the cover for the pin at 10:00. The ending was expected, but also successful in making The Flood look lucky to have won and keeping the Envoy strong. The action was fine but the middle portion was somewhat meandering. **½

Team Old Fashioned is in the back. Jervis Cottonbelly says he’s wanted to bring a lady into the fold for quite some time. Fontaine agrees, which is why they recruited the first lady of Gentlemania, Thunderkitty, for their team. Cottonbelly thinks she could use some finishing lessons. Fontaine says she is a little rough around the edges. Thunderkitty says she’s up past her bedtime, she missed her TV shows, and skipped bingo to come to this fight. She’s ready to put down the Devastation Corporation.

OldFashionedKOT14DevCorpKOT14
King of Trios 2014 First Round Match
Old Fashioned (Jervis Cottonbelly, Marion Fontaine & Thunderkitty) vs. The Devastation Corporation (Max Smashmaster, Blaster McMassive & Flex Rumblecrunch)

Sidney Bakabella is in the Devastation Corporation’s corner. Cottonbelly is overwhelmed by the screams of the Dev Corp members. Smashmaster pushes him to the floor with his feet. Thunderkitty comes in. Smashmaster does not take her seriously. He sends her into the ropes as she tries to lock up. McMassive and Fontaine tag in. Fontaine wants McMassive to put up his dukes. He then stomps on McMassive’s foot and ducks his punches. McMassive angrily throws him into the corner in a double choke. Thunderkitty tags back in. McMassive slaps her in the face. She charges but Fontaine and Cottonbelly hold her back. Rumblecrunch tosses Fontaine up so he comes crashing down in the mat. The Corporation isolate Fontaine from his partners, getting some illegal help from Bakabella in the process. Fontaine slips to the floor after getting mauled in the corner by all three Corporation members. Cottonbelly suffers the same fate. Thunderkitty finally gets in strikes, chopping up McMassive. She chops up Rumblecrunch too. She charges both of them in opposite corners. McMassive accidentally boots Rumblecrunch. Thunderkitty gives McMassive some shots to the chest and clotheslines him to the floor. She headbutts Smashmaster and gives him a bodyslam! She drops an elbow. Rumblecrunch picks her up and gives her a fallaway slam. Cottonbelly puts him in a crucifix. Fontaine dropkicks Rumblecrunch to assist Cottonbelly with a crucifix pin. He kicks out at two. McMassive whips Cottonbelly so hard to the corner that he hits the floor. The Death Blow connects on Fontaine (after Smashmaster slips on a first attempt) giving the Corporation the win at 9:36. The build up to Thunderkitty getting her chance to shine was well done, as was allowing the Corporation to look like a formidable team. This was fun, though that finish was a little dicey for a moment. **¾

Jagged finds himself being worn down by the BDK in their corner. Cube tries to steal a pin from Ares which does not make Ares happy. He blind tags himself in when the BDK attempt a Hart Attack. Ares gets in Cube’s face. Meanwhile, Matthews and Peck drag Nøkken to the floor. Ares notices Jagged charging. He moves and Jagged knocks Cube down. Ares tries a roll-up. Jagged counters with an Oklahoma Roll for the pin at 7:11. Short but sweet. The action was continuous and they got the idea that there were issues with Cube and Ares across very well. **¼

Ares argues with Cube. Cube slaps Ares in the face! Ares goes to throw a punch but Nøkken blocks it. He drops Ares with a sit-out reverse piledriver! Cube takes off his head – it’s Jakob Hammermeier! He says the last time we saw Jakob he was suffering after multiple disappointments. He says all the disappointments began with Ares who always overlooked him. Jakob reveals he now has control of the Eye of Tyr and has Nøkken under his control. He says it’s time for Ares to face reality. He calls Ares the real disappointment and says that Jakob now has taken control of the BDK. Jakob reveals he made a deal with some devils to get the Eye of Tyr (which to remind you, was originally in control by Ares’ father). He doesn’t reveal what the deal was, but says all the wrongs that have befell Jakob will be made right by the BDK.

He dropkicks Hernandez to the corner and follows in with a forearm. He snaps off an armdrag. Hernandez picks up Icarus after Icarus’ attempts a sunset flip. Icarus takes down both Hernandez and Homicide with a London Bridge. He fakes out a dive. LAX regroup on the floor. Hernandez catches Angelosetti’s tackle attempt and holds him up in the air for a very long time in a stalling suplex while Guerrero and Homicide stop Icarus and Hatfield from interrupting. Homicide drops Hatfield with a Complete Shot. Icarus tornado DDT’s Homicide. He follows him (and Hernandez) to the floor with an Asai moonsault. Hatfield and Angelosetti drop Guerrero with the 3D for the pin at 19:57. These teams had a fun dynamic, though I feel like Hernandez got the short end of the stick when it comes to time in the ring. The crowd was really into the Golden Trio which helped the flow. It could have been truncated and been a more tight package, but this was still solid stuff. ***

Chavo gets on the microphone. He says it’s a breath of fresh air to see that indie wrestling is still alive. He says the Golden Trio kicked butt tonight and calls them future stars.

CHIKARA students and rookies Kid Cyclone, Equinox III & Create-A-Wrestler II make their way to the ring. Cyclone introduces themselves to the crowd as the Greenhorn Militia. He asks the fans who remembers the Latvian Proud Oak, misses the Estonian Thunderfrog, and still loves Kobald. The fans cheer for each name. Cyclone wants to know why in Revere, MA when the Thunderfrog was left laying his mentors went and sold t-shirts. He wants to know why their champions are out here trying to win more gold. He says that’s fine, as the GHM is here to do the dirty work. With that, he calls out Deucalion. He gets the fans to chant “coward.” Out comes their trainer and mentor Hallowicked who tells them to leave. Cyclone tells the crowd he proved to everyone that Deucalion is a coward as he leaves.

ColonyKOT14ColonyXFKOT14
King of Trios 2014 First Round Match

This is a rematch from “You Only Live Twice.” Fire Ant avoids a charge from Arctic. He dropkicks him to the entrance ramp. Worker Ant follows him to the floor with a double axe handle. Fire Ant runs the ropes and sends Orbit to the floor with a headscissors. Silver Ant dives after him. Fire Ant comes off Missile’s shoulders with a Deja Vu. All three Colony members hit stereo suicide dives. Worker Ant throws some kicks at Arctic. He squashes him with a twisting splash. He lifts Missile up into a uranage slam, then slams Arctic onto him. He looks for the GTS on Arctic when Orbit clips out his leg. Arctic cracks his snowboard onto Worker Ant’s leg while Missile distracts referee Bryce Remsburg. With his leg in bad shape, Worker Ant is helped to the back. Missile tosses Silver Ant off the stage and to the floor. He then sends him into the ring post. Orbit throws Fire Ant into multiple rows of chairs. With Silver Ant out and Worker Ant being tended to, Fire Ant has to fend for himself against the evil doppelgängers. When he avoids some offense and is about to tag out, Missile pulls Silver Ant off of the apron so he and his teammates can continue to wear down Fire Ant. Fire Ant manages to stack up all three Xtreme Force members in the corner. Silver Ant comes in with a dropkick to Missile. He gives Arctic a Michinoku Driver. Missile breaks the pin. He kicks out Missile’s leg and delivers an antzuigiri. From the apron Silver Ant headbutts Missile. He springboards in and drops him with a tornado DDT. Orbit breaks the pin. Silver Ant suicide dives onto Arctic. Fire Ant hits Orbit with the Yahtzee Kick. He tries a tornado DDT. When Orbit counters he Burns Down the House. Silver Ant frogsplashes Orbit. He then puts on the CHIKARA Special. Missile breaks it up. Silver Ant wants a DDT. Missile catches him with a Northern Lights suplex. He wants another but Silver Ant locks on a Guillotine. Missile gets the second Northern Lights suplex. Silver Ant floats through and goes for a triangle choke. Missile picks up Silver Ant and powerbombs him into the corner. Silver Ant catches him with a trianlge choke in the ropes. Again Missile powerbombs him into the corner. He knocks Silver Ant to the floor. Fire Ant tries an apron headscissors but Missile powerbombs him back into the ring. Arctic gives him a Codebreaker and Orbit a back cracker. Missile’s diving headbutt is only good for two. Arctic rips off a turnbuckle pad while Orbit rips off another. Missile goes to launch Fire Ant into the exposed turnbuckle but he slides off. Worker Ant limps his way back out! He tosses Orbit and Arctic off the apron. Missile shoves Bryce Remsburg into Worker Ant. Worker Ant backdrops him to avoid a powerbomb. He goes for the GTS when Arctic cracks his snowboard over Worker Ant’s head! He still manages to kick out of Missile’s pin anyhow. Worker Ant trips Missile into one of the exposed turnbuckles. The GTS would do it but Orbit pulls Bryce out of the ring. As Orbit and Arctic are arguing with Bryce, the Colon launch Fire Ant onto them with the Antapult. Missile falls victim to the Ant Hill, giving the Colony the win at 17:22. This was the best match of the night in terms of in ring action and storytelling. Worker Ant’s injury was not only good storytelling for this match, but carries over into the next round (at least) as well. The Colony: Xtreme Force did a tremendous job playing up their villainous ways, and the callbacks to their first match with the exposed turnbuckles was a nice touch. A fitting way to end the first night. ***¼

The final score: review Good
The 411
King of Trios returned with somewhat of a whimper. With a lack of outside talent, it was important for the in ring action to be a home run in order to entice not just CHIKARA fans, but those who check in with the company annually specifically for this tournament. The matches were all good, but nothing that's worth going out of your way to see. It's a fun, easy watch, but not the strongest show to get fair weather or none fans back into the company. For CHIKARA fans however, they did a good job incorporating current stories and storylines into the action.
