Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 10.19.16 (Season Three, Episode 7)

OFFICIAL RESULTS
Lucha Underground Title Match: The Monster Matanza Cueto defeated Killshot @ 4:05 via pin [***]
For a Unique Opportunity Match: Drago defeated Fenix and Aerostar @ 8:45 via pin [***½]
– Prince Puma defeated Mil Muertes @ 8:50 via pin [***¾]

– We get the usual slick opening video package.

– Vampiro meets with Prince Puma, and wished him luck in his match with Muertes. Vampiro was about to offer assistance, but Puma refused that and said he would rather die by Muertes’ hands than live by Vampiro’s. Vampiro then predicted that Muertes would die by Puma’s hands.

– Dario arrived to spin his dial of doom, and this week’s challenger for Matanza’s title is Killshot.

Lucha Underground Title Match: The Monster Matanza Cueto vs. Killshot: Killshot is STILL selling the injuries from the weapons of mass destruction match. Matanza bull rushed Killshot at the bell and just destroyed him with clotheslines and then tossed him around. Killshot tried to use his speed, and appeared to start a run but Matanza caught him and hit some side back breakers. Killshot tried to take control by bending the fingers and wrist of Matanza in ways they don’t go, but Matanza hit a head butt and another suplex for a near fall. Killshot again fired up with a series of kicks, got cut off when he went up top. Killshot teased the tombstone off the ropes, but Killshot escaped and laid in licks in the corner, but missed the double stomp. Matanza decapitated him with a running elbow, and then the wrath of the gods finished Killshot. The Monster Matanza Cueto defeated Killshot @ 4:05 via pin [***] That was an excellent sprint, and a perfect example of making the best of the time you have. Monster moves from Matanza, great comebacks filled with fire and resilience by Killshot and a molten crowd made this work.

– Post match AR Fox (playing the man Killshot thought died when captured in war) arrived. Killshot thought he was seeing a ghost and was relived to see him and they hugged. Fox then kicked him in the face and started to beat him down. Fox laid him out with a straightjacket fisherman’s buster and stood tall before dropping his tags on him and saying, “you left me for dead.”

– We get a white rabbit teaser.

– Dario arrives and announces that in four weeks, AZTEC WARFARE returns! No one has come close to defeating Matanza, and he doesn’t think anyone here can beat him. So to give Matanza a real challenge, Matanza will defend the tile in the match and he will enter at #1. Dario then says he wants Fenix to have the chance to enter at #20. Fenix, Aerostar and Drago will have to fight, and the winner gets #20 in Aztec Warfare. But there is a twist; the losers are OUT of Aztec Warfare.

For a Unique Opportunity Match: Fenix vs. Aerostar vs. Drago: Aerostar and Drago started, they worked a fats paced back and forth. Fenix then entered the fray, and that led to them doing some three way spots and Drago being sent to the floor. Fenix hit the superkick to Aerostar, and then a springboard arm drag. Drago back in with the high cross, and then Aerostar hit the meteora on him. great pacing here as Aerostar hit a 6619, and sent Drago to the floor. Fenix then destroyed him with a superkick and Fenix’s mouth and nose and busted up. Aerostar hit a great step up dive on Fenix, and then Drago followed with a suicide dive. Fenix and Drago returned to the ring, Aerostar hit a German for 2 as Aerostar broke it up with a double stomp. Aerostar hit a series of boots and then Fenix caught the high cross, but Aerostar turned it into a DDT for a near fall. Drago planted Aerostar with a powerbomb, Fenix broke it up with a superkick and the hit the shotgun dropkick on Aerostar. They battled in the corner, and Drago arm dragged Aerostar off and then Fenix hit him with the double stomp. Back stabber by Aerostar gets 2 on Fenix. They all traded strikes center ring, Aerostar had a slip and then got taken out with a superkick. Fenix looks as if he lost some teeth; they then worked a three way submission spot. Fenix hit a running boot to Drago and a superkick to Aerostar. Drago then hit a destroyer on Fenix, and then the blockbuster DDT on Aerostar and he wins the match. Drago defeated Fenix and Aerostar @ 8:45 via pin [***½] That was a hell of a little three way match right there, it was chaotic in a good way, and while a little sloppy at times, kept a great pace and the crowd was into everything they did. Drago winning was a nice surprise as I think many felt Fenix would walk away with the win, but Drago is official at #20 for Aztec Warfare and the others are out. The other thing to ponder is if this will cause issues with the trios champions, as two of them lost the chance to fight for the Lucha Underground Title. Dario is a magnificent asshole, always messing with friends. This was all great.

– Backstage, Drago is looking in a mirror and Kobra Moon arrives. She says she expects him to win the title and bring the title back to the tribe. He says he left the tribe a long time ago and will not return. Creepy Vinnie, eating some pizza, arrives and says he thought this was the men’s room.

– Johnny Mundo says he needs to be the champion and tells Dario he is desperate. He has Dario’s briefcase from season one, and it’s still full of the money Dario paid him, well $93,000 of it (he had to pay off some issues with an internet photo). He wants a match with Sexy Star, and Dario says he gets the Gift of the Gods Title shot next week.

Mil Muertes vs. Prince Puma: Puma attacked right away, using strikes and a mix of speed but Muertes cut him off and beat him down in the corner. Puma hit a kick and then a springboard high cross, Muertes then got sent to the floor and Puma hit a suicide dive. He then followed with a beautiful over the top dive. They brawled on the floor, where Muertes took out Puma with a great looking spear. Muertes then beat him down with a chair and then they brawled into the crowd, with Muertes keeping control. Muertes returned to ringside, and that gave Puma the chance to recover and hit a wild dive out of the bleachers onto Muertes.

Puma tried to drag Muertes back into the ring, and hit the running shooting star press for a near fall. Puma hit a kick to a charging Muertes, and then missed and rolled through the 630. Muertes then hit the snap slam, which got 2. Muertes cut off the Superman punch with a straight right, and followed with a chokeslam, which got a good near fall. Muertes signaled for the end, but Puma escaped the flatliner with elbows and a kick to the face. Muertes tossed him back to the corner and hit repeated corner clotheslines, but Muertes then missed a charge and posted himself. Puma hit a series of kicks and hit the 630 and scored the win! Prince Puma defeated Mil Muertes @ 8:50 via pin [***¾] That was a really good main event, these two guys work well together, broke away from a lot of their standard stuff and the action played off of the feud well. Puma finally gets some revenge for losing the title at Ultima Lucha, but with it being 1-1, I sense that this is far from over, and I am perfectly fine with that.

– We see Rey Mysterio discussing his feud with Chavo, and asked a mystery person where he will stand with the family if he battled Chavo. Chavo Classic was the man he was talking to, and asked Rey if he was sure that the fight was the only way. Rey then said that either Chavo has to leave or he does.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

The 411
This was a great show this week, with three quality and different matches that all delivered, and everything flowing together seamlessly. This is the kind of show I had been waiting for, the wrestling delivered, they set up Aztec Warfare and advanced angles. Big thumbs up this week.
