Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 2.10.16 – The Hunt is On (Season 2, Episode 3)

OFFICIAL RESULTS
– Kobra Moon defeated Bengala @ 2:45 via submission [DUD]
– Jack Evans defeated Drago @ 7:21 via pin [**¾]
Non-Title Last Luchadore Standing Match: Fenix defeated Champion King Cuerno @ 11:25 [***¾]

– We get the usual quality video package to open the show.

Bengala vs. Kobra Moon: We have a new (older and fatter) Bengala for season two. I think it’s Ricky Marvin, Twitter seemed to think so as well; no matter, he was not god here. This felt completely awkward and clunky. Bengala was slow and didn’t work well with Moon early, and Moon seemed too interested in doing snake like moves as the match never really got going. Bengala ate knees on a moonsault and Moon locked in a dragon sleeper and that was all. Not a good match at all, and Moon didn’t look impressive at all. I honestly can’t believe that they ran that on TV, it did no one any favors.

– We see Catrina in her office, and she is speaking to Fenix. He wants revenge against King Cuerno. He wants to destroy Cuerno, Muertes and Catrina.

– After a commercial, we go back to a Millennia ago to a native child in front of a fire. We then see presumably the same person as a grown man, and then Aerostar appears. Not only can this motherfucker fly, but he can also time travel! They discuss the Gods not returning for 1,000 years and Aerostar takes off into the stars. The tribes need to be reunited.

– Back in present day to the arena as King Cuerno works out. Catrina appears and is upset that he did not destroy Fenix. Cuerno say she did what he was told to do, and she threatens him before reminding him that they are on the same side. She wants him to kill the Fenix once and for all in a non-title, last luchadore standing match. Cuerno promised that the hunt was on and creeped on Catrina by sniffing her.

Jack Evans vs. Drago: They went fast paced almost right away, working counters and then Evans resorting to brawling. They went back and forth striking, with Evans taking some ridiculous bumps off of the strikes. Drago looked to work a submission, and Evans bit his hand to escape. They did some fun stuff here, and certainly worked hard and took some crazy bumps for such a short match, but it simply felt as if they were just doing things at times. As an athletic exhibition it was fun, and thankfully got better as the match went on. Evans countered Drago’s attempt to finish things and got a backslide with his feet on the ropes to pick up the win. Evans then declared himself the Dragon Slayer. It started rough but developed into a pretty good outing.

– We get a Texano video package. He chopped wood, spoke about his heritage and issues with Chavo Guerrero. He also got into a bar fight with masked assailants. He returns next week.

– We see Prince Puma backstage, and Catrina arrived and asked who he prayed to. She basically said Konnan died when in the casket last season, and wondered if he asked God for forgiveness. Catrina said that he will face Penagon Jr. next week, and maybe Puma will be the one making a sacrifice to his master.

Gift of the Gods Champion King Cuerno vs. Fenix: This is a rematch from episode one of this season, where Cuerno defeated Fenix to take the Gift of the Gods title. They went right at it from the start, playing off of their previous match. I thought they went to the ref counting on guys way too early, like three times in the first two-minutes. They went to the floor, where Drago missed a dive and was then whipped into the first few rows of seats. They spent a lot of time on the floor, with the ref repeatedly counting on Fenix. At this point it felt like an example of the stipulation taking away from the match, as there were too many counts on Fenix for things that usually would not keep him down for that long. Things picked up when Fenix took control and made his comeback, hitting some sweet dives and bringing the energy that the match was lacking early. Fenix headed up top, but Cuerno knocked him all the way to the floor and then hit the suicide dive of death, which always looks awesome. Cuerno then found a ladder and took Fenix’s head off with it. Cuerno set up a table and they battled. Fenix climbed the ladder (which was against the wall) and Cuerno followed, but Fenix made it to the top and over and then kicked Cuerno, who fell backwards and rode the ladder through the table…

HE’S DEAD JIM! Fenix begged the ref to count as he was perched on top of the office, and Cuerno was done. They had to fight against the stipulation at times,. But overcame to deliver a quality main event.

– We see a high security area with a lady walking. She had to use a key card entry. She is Captain Vasquez (we see a name plate) and meets with someone, officer Reyes (Rickey Reyes/Cortez of the Crew). He says he was getting close to Chavo and Blue Demon Jr. and Catrina has invited the crew back to the temple. Captain Vasquez doesn’t care about this shit; she wants to find Dario Cueto! Reyes says no one has seen him for months, Reyes wanted to bring him in when Matanza ate Bale. Captain Vasquez says she is sending someone else in. OFFICER JOEY RYAN has arrived! Captain Vasquez says that they have one mission; bring down Dario Cueto.

– End scene.

– Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Good
The 411
We started rough this week, as the first match and introduction of Kobra Moon was pretty bad. It got better with the next match and cinematics, and peaked with the main event and the post credits scene. They continue to do a good job of introducing the new characters, reintroducing old ones, and even providing some twists like the stuff at the end with Cortez being a cop. This show is so gloriously outside the box in its stories and grindhouse feel (which I love) and also delivers good wrestling when needed. They have done a good job with Catrina and the story involving her, Muertes, Fenix and the title. Cuerno may be a hunter, but he also appears as if he is about to be sick of Catrina’s shit real soon, which will add another layer to the story. This was certainly an improvement over last week, and the final portion of the show was very strong overall.
