Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 2.25.15

Introduction
As a reminder, this will not be another traditional recap, but instead it will be a mash up of the Rs, Instant Analysis and my usual Twitter ramblings I would do during the shows; completely uncensored and as the ideas flow unfiltered to the old keyboard. Remember, this is a review; and I am here to review the show. As always, I encourage discussion and even disagreement, just do so in a respectful manner. I will be doing the review for Raw and most PPVs and iPPVs going forward.

~ Non-Title Match: Cage defeated Champion Prince Puma @ 8:40 via towel begin thrown in [***½]

* We see a car driving, and then get the From Dusk Till Dawn effect to show that the mystery woman is tied up in the trunk.

Drago vs. Aero Star: These guys faced off on the February 4th episode, where Drago took the victory in a fun, but short match. They are both technicos, and Drago showed respect following his victory. The story is that Aero Star wants to prove himself and basically get his win back. They must have done some editing, because Striker keeps saying that they faced off last week, but that wasn’t the case. Considering when these were taped, they really should have done everything in their power to fix that. This was a really fun little opener here. They worked a rapid pace, they did their dives and the crowd loved it. They also had a really good series of pinning combos and reversals down the stretch. Aero Star hit a sunset flip bomb to the floor, and immediately rolled Drago in and hit a springboard splash to finish him off. It could have used another minute or two to let some of the stuff breathe, but I felt that it was a good way to open the show. Aero Star showed respect to Drago and helped him up; similar to what Drago did in their first meeting.

* Dario Cueto appeared, and said he wanted more. Cueto said they will spend more time together, because he makes this a best of five series with it being tied 1-1. Cueto promised a “unique opportunity” to the winner. That crafty bastard.

* We get a special video on King Cuerno

Non-Title Match: Champion Puma vs. Cage: Dario Cueto promised Cage last week that if he defeated Puma this week, he’d be next in line for Puma’s title. They are hyping this as the first time that Puma has been back in a month, and he (as the champion) is not in the main event? Not a fan of that to be truthful, but the advantage here is that you don’t know how long it will go, which if it was in the main event you would. I see both sides. This was classic speed vs. brute force match, as every time Puma would get something going the bigger and stronger Cage would cut him off. Commentary did a good job discussing that Konnan was still out injured due to Cage’s attack, and that this absence could be affecting the young champion. Puma was able to get enough going to get a solid run of offense going, and then hit a sick run up the ropes shooting star press to the floor on Cage. They worked really well together, and had a really great match considering the time they were given. They were really unloading their arsenals, with Puma playing the resilient champion perfectly. Late in the match, Konnan magically returned to root on Puma. Cage would hit multiple powerbombs and the unload with mounted strikes, prompting Konnan to throw in the towel for Puma. Puma looked great as he never gave up, Cage looked like a fucking animal out there and the sketchiness of Konnan continues to be right in the forefront. I have discussed before, but want to say again that the Konnan/Puma relationship is interesting. Konnan is obviously out for himself, attaching himself to Puma and his secret dealings with Cueto in the past are suspect. Add into this the fact that Puma has repeatedly shown to be upset with Konnan or not always buying his bullshit, and it is intriguing. Is Konnan setting up Puma for a fall to back a “better prospect”? Later, after a commercial, we went backstage where Konnan explained to Puma that he did him a favor. He says it is all about deception, and that they need to execute their plan. Hmmm….

* Sexy Star complains to Cueto about men getting involved in her matches. She wants to get revenge on the Crew, so Cueto then makes Sexy Star vs. Big Ryck next week, and promises no men will get involved or try to save her.

Pentagon Jr vs. Vinny Massaro: Pentagon Jr made the ring announcer claim that this match is dedicated to his master. Pentagon Jr killed this man quickly, and looked like a bad ass doing so. He then got a table and powerbombed Massaro through it. And to complete the ass beating, he broke another man’s arm. Pentagon Jr gives no fucks and is awesome.

Johnny Mundo vs. King Cuerno: Cuerno has been getting involved on Mundo’s business and took out Mundo’s knee when he was facing Cage. They largely went at it right away, and had a physical and at times intense match. Cuerno worked the knee a bit, but not nearly enough considering how much commentary was selling it. Mundo then basically stopped selling the knee, like leaping in the ring off the ropes and landing on his feet and then just kept going. Cuerno then hit a dive to the floor, and Mundo decided to sell the knee and limped around. It became very frustrating. Cuerno hit a series of dives, and we then got a double countout. They then brawled for several minutes until Mundo countered a charge and clammed Cuerno through a cage door on the upper level. I liked the brawl better than the match, which wasn’t bad but Mundo continues to not sell the knee while commentary makes a big deal out of Cuerno’s previous attacks on the knee. The disconnect there shouldn’t happen.

* We see the car from the beginning, the trunk opened and a mystery masked man told the tied up women t come with him…

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Good
The 411
This was a much needed rebound following last week’s show, which was the weakest show of the series thus far. This week had much better wrestling, the advancement in both the Puma vs. Cage and Cuerno vs. Mundo feuds, and on top of that Pentagon Jr continues to be a complete bad ass. The hour went by very quick, and we have plenty to look forward too just based off of this week’s show.
