Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 3.04.15

Introduction
As a reminder, this will not be another traditional recap, but instead it will be a mash up of the Rs, Instant Analysis and my usual Twitter ramblings I would do during the shows; completely uncensored and as the ideas flow unfiltered to the old keyboard. Remember, this is a review; and I am here to review the show. As always, I encourage discussion and even disagreement, just do so in a respectful manner. I will be doing the review for Raw and most PPVs and iPPVs going forward.

Lucha Underground 3.04.15 – A War Started In Mexico

OFFICIAL RESULTS
~ Mil Muertes defeated Fenix @ 5:55 via pin [**½]
~ Big Ryck defeated Sexy Star @ 1:55 via pin [NR]
~ Non-Title Match: Texano defeated Alberto El Patron @ 12:20 via DQ [***½]

* We get our usual good opening video to recap things that have been happening over the last few weeks.

* Dario Cueto meets with Alberto El Patron, discussing tonight’s main event. Cueto offers Patron some jobber opponents, but Patron wants Texano. Cueto wants time to promote that and keeps offering up goofs, but Patron violently clears off the desk and again demands Texano. Cueto agreed and Patron thanked him.

Mil Muertes vs. Fenix: Mil Muertes and Fenix have wrestled twice, Muertes won the first match early in the series and then they had a match a few weeks ago. Fenix got a surprise win there and since then has basically stolen Muertes’ woman, Catrina. Not so much that he tried to steal her as Catrina left Muertes and started making out with Fenix. Considering that the Catrina/Muertes relationship appears to be an abusive one (I mean, he grabs her by the throat and picks her up off the ground) I can’t say I blame her. They battled for a few minutes; Catrina eventually appeared and had the mystery rock that came from the rubble where Muertes came from. Legit. They had a perfectly fine match, Muertes did his power game and Fenix hit his dives and flashy moves. It was solid and there was nothing wrong with it, but I just never got into it in a major way. This ended up being more about the angle, as post match Catrina refused to listen to Muertes. He tried to assault her, but Fenix grabbed the mystery stone, hit Muertes and laid him out with a trouble in paradise style kick. Catrina then gave Muertes the LICK OF DEATH and made out with Fenix. The match was solid and the post match does advance the story. But they cannot do this all the time, or they will get into WWE territory where the wins and losses do not matter as long as you stand tall and your music plays. The crowd likes Fenix, but there is no real heat on Muertes, even with the constant threats to Catrina.

* Konnan, in an enclosed warehouse, stands in the rain for a special video package hyping his revenge.

* Cueto makes Ivelisse vs. Angelico with Son of Havoc as special referee for next week’s show.

* Prince Puma trains and Alberto El Patron meets with him. Patron says that he needs to listen to his master, man up and defeat Cage. And if he does that, Patron promises that he will come for the title.

Sexy Star vs. Big Ryck: This match was made by Cueto last week. Sexy Star was pissed that men keep trying to rescue her and wanted to face off with the Crew. Cueto said that since Ryck also wanted to get revenge on the Crew, that they would face off and the winner gets their shot at the Crew. Ryck offered to let Sexy lay down and take the loss, but she attacked and went on the offense. Ryck never took her seriously and wanted her to lay down or take a countout loss. He then for to hit a uranage, but instead laid her down like he was tucking her in bed and held her by the shoulders to get the win. I do not feel that Lucha Underground has been doing the Intergender Wrestling correctly, and this was a match that should have been avoided. Post match the Crew arrived and attacked Ryck. Star tried to help, and failed miserably. Ryck then made his own comeback and stood tall.

* They aired a really good video package on Alberto El Patron. In some ways it was a video with him cutting a calmer version of his debut promo, but it worked.

Non-Title Match: Texano vs. AAA Mega Heavyweight Champion of the Universe Alberto El Patron: El Patron won the AAA Title from Texano, and when El Patron made his debut in Lucha Underground, Texano followed and laid him out. I felt that these two worked really well together, and gave a really good main event. Texano was trying to continue the humiliation of Patron, while Patron wanted revenge for his debut with LU begin ruined. This was a very clean match in terms of the work, and flowed pretty effortlessly and made sense. El Patron looked to have things won, but since Texano introduced the bull rope, Patron lost his temper and whipped him repeatedly for the DQ loss. I liked the match, personally I would have booked something that Patron could have won and then moved onto this match, but that’s just me. El Patron felt like a star and the crowd treated him that way, which is something that the promotion needs. Good stories and fun wrestling are great, but you need viewers and to get them you need guys that are looked at as stars.

* King Cuerno met with Dario Cueto and vowed to defeat Johnny Mundo next week, INSIDE A STEEL CAGE.

The final score: review Good

An overall good, but not great show this week. The opening match was fine in the ring, but was also a continuation of an ongoing story. They have to be careful with the way they did the finish, doing it occasionally is fine but if it becomes a weekly occurrence then we’ll have issues. I wasn’t a fan of Ryck vs. Star as a match, but the angle sets them up as allies to battle the Crew and continue on with that story. The main event was really good and I easily enjoyed that work the most of anything on the show. The finish is fine as an occasional thing, because it extends the feud but again, doing it occasionally is fine but if it becomes a weekly occurrence then we’ll have issues. They also set up King Cuerno vs. Johnny Mundo in a steel cage and Ivelisse vs. Angelico with Son of Havoc as special referee for next week’s show, which is always appreciated. I also liked the Puma/El Patron tease. Lucha Underground continues to be an easy to watch and overall fun hour of TV.
