Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 4.22.15

Introduction
As a reminder, this will not be another traditional recap, but instead it will be a mash up of the Rs, Instant Analysis and my usual Twitter ramblings I would do during the shows; completely uncensored and as the ideas flow unfiltered to the old keyboard. Remember, this is a review; and I am here to review the show. As always, I encourage discussion and even disagreement, just do so in a respectful manner. I will be doing the review for Raw and most PPVs and iPPVs going forward.

* Black Lotus writes in her diary. She thinks she’s ready after eight weeks just because she beat some ninja knockoffs as they attacked her one at a time. Her master then proved she wasn’t ready. See you in another four weeks or so babe.

Sexy Star vs. Pentagon Jr.: This was set up over the last few weeks, following a failed teaming in the trios tournament and Pentagon going too far with Star’s friends. Let me get the positives out of the way, they had a great crowd for this. I was not really a fan of this. First of all the work didn’t feel all that smooth early. Secondly, I have no issue with booking Star to be competitive and then lose, but they made her Pentagon’s equal here, which was a huge mistake. Part of that is how weak Star has been booked against men, and part of that is because of how strong Pentagon had been booked. Star has been pinned off of weak stuff, and while I get the story of her fighting for what she believes in, her kicking out of a bunch of stuff that could have and should have been finishes felt ridiculous. Add into the fact that Pentagon had a lot of momentum by winning, taking out guys, and the whole Master angle and I feel as if this really hurt his momentum. Had Star been booked better, more strongly since day one I could have taken this victory she got, but not the way the product has presented both of the competitors. Pentagon should have largely dominated; Star should have had her hope spots and then lost. I wasn’t really a fan of this.

* Johnny Mundo does a wacky workout and has works with El Patron.

* Drago challenges Prince Puma for the Lucha Underground Title next week.

Trios Tournament Finals Match: Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Angelico vs. Cage, King Cuerno and Texano vs. Big Ryck, The MACK and Killshot: This will be elimination rules (not individual elimination, but when someone from your team loses, you’re done), with three people in at all times and you can only tag with your teammates. Cage, King Cuerno and Texano are an awesome rudo team, as Cuerno and Texano didn’t give a shit about rules and stayed in the ring a lot to work over Killshot and Angelico. It broke down; they hit some dives (Ivelisse was down on the floor with a leg injury, which I believe was legit) and then they built to the big man brawl between Cage and Ryck. Angelico hit the double knees off of the apron onto Texano, which led to Daviari’s drink getting spilled. Daviari then brawled with Texano and bailed. Killshot then hit the double stop on Texano to eliminate the rudo team. They actually went through the break, which outside of Aztec Warfare (and that lasted the entire show) is the only other time I think they’ve done that. After the break, Big Ryck’s team dominated the action, working over Angelico. Ryck made the mistake of not taking a pin and pulling up Angelico as they continued the domination. Angelico managed to make the comeback and dump MACK and Ryck to the floor, and then Havok finally got in. Ivelisse then fought back into the match and hit a dive onto the floor, was caught and then Havok hit a dive onto her, MACK and Ryck while hit the fall of the angels (Razor’s edge to the buckles) to score the win. This was an overall fun match with a great crowd, but wasn’t nearly as good as some of the best Lucha Underground matches.

* BUT WAIT! El Jefe, Dario Cueto is out and said he never thought the most dysfunctional team would win the titles. Well, they haven’t won yet because there is ONE MORE TEAM that he personally selected. He then announced that the real finals are now in a NO DQ match, and the last team is The Crew. Oh Dario Cueto you evil bastard!

Trios Title NO DQ Match: Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Angelico vs. The Crew (Castro, Mr. Cisco and Bael): The Crew dominated early, taking advantage over the tired faces. The Crew took out Angelico and Havok and then looked to work over Ivelisse, but Havok then made the save. They brawled around the building and in the ring and then the focus was on attacking Ivelisse in the ring. There was a scary suplex spot in the floor involving Havok, thankfully he was ok and hit a big moonsault from the crowd. And then, Angelico did THIS…

Damn. Ivelisse then got the kendo stick and started to deliver shots to the Crew. She then directed traffic for her team, which finally started to work together, and Havok hit a shooting star press as Angelico hit the big double stomp and then scored the win. Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Angelico celebrated with the titles to close the show. They gave them a nice amount of time to celebrate playing off of the faces overcoming the stacked odds (not likening each other, being forced to work together to survive, having to beat two teams to “win the titles’ and then having to face one more fresh team to walk away with the belts.

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Good
The 411
I enjoyed the show overall, it was fun. While the booking and match between Star and Pentagon didn’t make sense to me, I felt that the trios title stuff was both fun, really entertaining and easily carried the show. They told a good story for the babyface champions, Dario Cueto continues to be the best evil authority figure in wrestling (I hate pretty much all of them BUT him) and what he does makes sense in terms of what they have created for the character. The first trios champions are crowned, Puma faces Drago next week, they continue to tease Mundo & Patron and they also planted seeds for Daviari vs. Texano and that whole team really since his involvement cost them the chance at the titles. This was an enjoyable show overall.
