Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 4.27.16 – (Season 2, Episode 14) Cage in a Cage

OFFICIAL RESULTS
Gift of the Gods Aztec Medallion Cage Match: Cage defeated Johnny Mundo @ 13:38 via pin [***½]
Trios Title Elimination Match: Prince Puma, Rey Mysterio Jr and Dragon Azteca Jr defeated Champions Ivelisse and Son of Havoc, Joey Ryan, Cortez Castro and Mr. Cisco, and Fenix, Jack Evans and PJ Black @ 23:15 via pin [****¼]

– We get the usual video package to kick off the show.

– Striker and Vampiro say that Mil Muertes and Matanza will return to action soon, following their crashing through the roof of Dario Cueto’s office last week.

Cage Match For a Gift of The Gods Aztec Medallion: Johnny Mundo w/Taya vs. Cage: Mundo was in the only other Lucha Underground steel cage match, which he won. This is pin, submission or escape the cage. They started to brawl immediately, with Cage controlling and slamming Mundo into the cage several times. Cage completely dominated early, they battled up top and Mundo was able to crotch him and then delivered knees against the cage to finally get some offense going. Mundo kept trying to escape the cage for his way of victory, because he’s a pussy rudo. He then scored with the Spanish fly, which got a near fall. Mundo again tried to escape, got cut off but then connected with the moonlight drive from the top and that got another near fall.

Taya tried to give Mundo a kendo stick, but Cage would have none of that and hit a German suplex and buckle bomb. The powerbomb to the cage followed, and Mundo is down. Cage tried to escape but Taya connected with kendo stick shots, and then tossed it to Mundo and he worked over Cage with it. Cage then got completely pissed off and started to swing wildly with the kendo, Mundo ran and did his best to avoid him but Cage just destroyed him with a spinebuster. Cage destroyed the kendo on Mundo, and then just broke it in half and looked for the screwdriver, but Mundo escaped and landed a series of kicks. Taya then climbed the cage again with a chair and tossed it in and Mundo nailed Cage with a headshot, but that only got a near fall. Mundo climbed again, and then missed the corkscrew moonsault off the top of the cage. Taya climbed again, went up top and hit a high cross onto Cage.

Taya and Mundo hit a magic killer on Cage, and both covered but Cage kicked out. Taya then brought in handcuffs, but Cage then handcuffed Taya to the ropes. Mundo then missed Cage with the chair shot and hit Taya. Mundo set up the chair and ht the Steiner screwdriver onto the chair to pick up the win and the medallion. That was a good match to open the show; while the Taya interference made sense and Cage was able to overcome in the end, it was a bit too much for me and took away from the match a bit. Also the “climb the cage when you have a clear escape and then jump off due to overconfidence” bit in these matches is just completely overplayed. I am sure that some absolutely loved this though, which is cool.

– Texano, Aerostar and Cage now hold Aztec medallions.

– Dario Cueto is here before the live crowd and has breaking news. Cueto says that Angelico has had an accident, is on his way to the hospital, and he will get to the bottom of this. Ivelisse and Son of Havoc will still defend the titled for their team, and he wished them luck. Because “they’re really going to need it.” Angelico was out of action here, due to suffering an injury in Mexico, which caused him to miss several tapings. They wrote around it well with the short and simple Dario promo, where he came off super sketchy; plus he already has a history trying to screw the champions so it worked.

Trios Title Elimination Match: Champions Ivelisse and Son of Havoc vs. Prince Puma, Rey Mysterio Jr and Dragon Azteca Jr vs. Joey Ryan, Cortez Castro and Mr. Cisco vs. Fenix, Jack Evans and PJ Black: As soon as one member of a team loses, the whole team is gone. They are working this like a four-way with tags, so four in at a time. They did the whole do a lot of shit and then do a standoff opening, which then turned into everyone gets to hit a move and stand off again. We got some fresh bodies in and Vampiro actually said something smart when he said, “what the hell am I looking at.” They first three minutes were way to frantic, thankfully it slowed a bit so that you could actually digest what we were seeing. The Crew took control of things for a bit, Joey Ryan ran from Ivelisse at one point , and Jack Evans just chilled.

It broke down into a series of dives, which was well done and brought the crowd back into it nicely. Joey Ryan cut off Ivelisse when she wanted to dive, so she slapped him and planted him with a German. Castro saved Ryan and laid out Ivelisse with a brainbuster. Ryan demanded the tag, he refused and Ivelisse rolled up Castro @ 7:50 for the first elimination. After the rare commercial break, Havoc, Evans and Puma were in. Evans got sent to the floor, allowing Havoc to run wild with the double stomp off the top and then the standing moonsault for a near fall. Jack Evans returned, worked over Ivelisse and then proclaimed that he was the baddest bitch in the building…

It broke down, Ivelisse hit a code red on Evans but the ref was distracted. Black turned it around after a superkick kick and Evans pinned Ivelisse @ 13:55. We WILL have new champions. After the final commercial break, Fenix and Azteca worked some really nice back and forth and this started to greatly pick up my interest level now that we got rid of a bunch of bodies. It was good up and to this point, but this felt cleaner and started to come off as effortless from the remaining performers. Puma hit a 630 on Black, but then Evans saved the day with a kick to the dick. Evans would accidentally kick his teammates when he demanded that they hold Puma; this allowed Rey to enter and run wild. Rey played the hits, and looked good doing so. Puma and Azteca pulled off some cool double teams and followed it with dives. Rey then hit a split legged moonsault to pick up the anticlimactic win over Evans .

The final pin by Mysterio felt lackluster, but the overall match was very good. It obviously got way better once we got rid of some of the others and, because there was more room and it was easier to digest. Rey, Azteca and Puma is cool, as Rey (the legend) and Puma (the former champion) gives the titles more credibility, and also helps make Azteca come off as more important.

– We get a final scene, where Pentagon Jr is in a Professor Xavier style wheelchair, meeting with his master. The master demands he getup, but he can’t. Vampiro (the master) demands that he get up, and pours wax on him from a black candle and yells at him again. Pentagon tries to get up but collapses, and Vampiro calls him weak as he leaves the candle burning beside him. Vampiro has a shitty bedside manner.

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Very Good
The 411
This was one of the Lucha Underground “peak shows,” where angles come to a conclusion or impact point and the focus is on the encounters and less on the cinematics. Aztec Warfare was one of those shows, and this was another. In that respect, it’s a very good show as Cage got a big victory over Mundo and scored a medallion, we crowned new trios champions to close out the tournament, and the wrestling delivered. No real complains this week, it was a really easy hour of TV to watch.
