Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 5.11.16 – (Season 2, Episode 16) Graver Consequences

OFFICIAL RESULTS
Gift of the Gods Aztec Medallion Match: Joey Ryan defeated Cortez Castro and Mr. Cisco @ 1:00 via pin [NR]
Trios Title Match: Champions Rey Mysterio Jr, Dragon Azteca Jr and Prince Puma defeated Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Johnny Mundo @ 7:13 via pin [**¾]
Graver Consequences: Champion The Monster Matanza Cueto defeated Mil Muertes @ 14:55 [***½]

– We get the usual video package to kick off the show.

– Dario Cueto meets with Councilman Delgado, with Dario delivering a payoff for Delgado’s “employer.” Dario goes to leave, but is stopped and agrees to have a drink with Delgado. Delgado is pissed that Dario is getting sloppy, informs him of the police investigation and says that the cops may have someone inside already. Delgado then teases that his boss will come by when his dissension is complete, and that he has been waiting to see things in person. This scared Dario, especially when Delgado said, “did you think your brother would get to have all of the fun?”

Gift of the Gods Aztec Medallion Match: Cortez Castro vs. Joey Ryan vs. Mr. Cisco: Ryan bailed early after getting beat on and that allowed Cisco and Castro to work. Ryan then returned and got a flash roll up to win in around a minute. Not a fan of so many quick matches, I hope this isn’t like last week in that regard. Also, I would have liked a video where Dario made the match between them, since they failed in the trios finals (being the first team out) instead of commentary just sort of tossing it out there.

– Joey Ryan, Sexy Star, Siniestro de la Muerte, The Mack, Texano, Aerostar and Cage (technically Chavo stole his) now hold Aztec medallions.

– Mil Muertes meditates to prepare for Graver Consequences, as Catrina monologues about being a victim of the darkness for 197 years. She then reminded Muertes that she guided him out of his hell; she freed him from the underworld and made his more powerful than ever. She locked him in the coffin last year to bring him back better than ever, but tonight, he will bring Matanza Cueto to his knees and close him in the coffin. She will then lock the face of the monster, the face of a God, and make them immortal. They leave and King Cuerno arrives, he’s on the hunt.

Trios Title Match: Champions Rey Mysterio Jr, Dragon Azteca Jr and Prince Puma vs. Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Johnny Mundo: Commentary said that Dario Cueto assigned Ivelisse and Son of Havoc Mundo as a partner, but it felt very out of place (the way the match was announced with no tease prior to the show) as in we missed some backstage segments in there. They’ve also been good at the very least in hyping a match like this in the preview or on Twitter, and that seemed absent this time around. Azteca Jr and Ivelisse started with some fine back and forth, as well as mutual respect. Same from Rey and Havoc when they went in, this will not last when Mundo gets in. Mundo and Puma tagged in and the mutual respect was gone as they went at it right away. Puma got sent to the floor and Taya got involved, and Ivelisse didn’t appreciate that. Nice stuff early here, they are setting a good pace and locked in the story with Mundo being a dick, with Ivelisse and Havoc not wanting to use his tactics. Rey and Havoc worked ell together, and Ivelisse tripped him up and then Mundo tagged in and accidentally took her out. Rey hit 619 on Havoc, and Puma then hit the 630 to pick up the win. This was a rock solid match, but it never really locked into solid flow of any kind, it was more of a fun display of moves. Commentary put over the fact that Rey was “passing the torch” to Puma in tagging out so that he could secure the victory.

– Post match, Taya attacked Ivelisse and laid her out.

– We get our Day of the Dead ceremony as the set up for Graver Consequences begins.

Lucha Underground Graver Consequences Title Match: Champion The Monster Matanza Cueto w/Dario Cueto vs. Mil Muertes w/Catrina: Mil Muertes was in the only other Grave Consequences match, which he lost to Fenix. They stared brawling right away, with Matanza taking the advantage and working to the floor. Catrina tried to use a chair on Matanza, which failed, but caused enough of a distraction for Muertes to battle back. Matanza then powerbombed Muertes on ton of two coffins, and tried to undo the bottom rope. Muertes could not be kept down, and after a brief exchange on the apron, Muertes hit the flatliner off of the apron and onto the coffins. Dario then got involved, but like Catrina failed to help, but caused enough of a distraction for Matanza to battle back and hit the rolling gut wrench suplexes. Muertes then finished taking the bottom rope off and grabbed the metal part of the buckle, which backfired because Matanza used it on Muertes and then started to rip off the mask of Muertes. Unfortunately that’s becoming too regular a spot, and has lost its impact a bit. These two were just beating the hell out of each other, with Muertes getting a toolbox and grabbing “an armored glove.” Matanza was able to take control back, tossing Muertes and coffins to the floor and closed Muertes into the coffin, apparently winning. Well he would have, but Muertes PUNCHED THROUGH TE COFFIN and he was alive. Ok, that was a cool spot. Dario and Catrina used their trinkets (key and stone) to help revive their men, and Catrina then took out Dario and ate a chair to the face from Matanza. He took the stone and tossed it into a coffin, and also placed Catrina into the coffin. Muertes then hit a suicide dive and started to beat the hell out of Matanza for what he did to Catrina. Muertes tried to get Matanza into the coffin, but the monster fought back and then powerbombed Muertes onto the coffin. Matanza finally hit the wrath of the gods slam into the coffin, and retained the title. That was an overall good match, but it just never felt as if it had the heat or the energy of Fenix vs. Muertes from last season.

– Post match, Dario opened the coffin that Catrina was in, but SHE WAS GONE.

– The Day of the Dead parade comes back to collect Muertes, and we se that one of the hooded men with them was KING CUERNO.

– In a post show scene, Councilman Delgado meets with a mystery man in a limo. He gives the man the money from Cueto, and is very nervous as he explains that he told Cueto to prepare the temple for his arrival. Delgado calls the man, “my lord” as we fade to black.

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Good
The 411
Overall a good show tonight, as we got more with the Councilman Delgado story and discovered that there may be someone even more powerful than the Monster Matanza Cueto. The main event was good, and as a hoss battle I appreciated it, but it just couldn’t get me as improved or excited as the first grave consequences match. Another good show from Lucha Underground, but there nothing I feel was must see TV this week, and at times it felt as if it was just missing something.
