Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 5.20.15

Introduction
As a reminder, this will not be another traditional recap, but instead it will be a mash up of the Rs, Instant Analysis and my usual Twitter ramblings I would do during the shows; completely uncensored and as the ideas flow unfiltered to the old keyboard. Remember, this is a review; and I am here to review the show. As always, I encourage discussion and even disagreement, just do so in a respectful manner. I will be doing the review for Raw and most PPVs and iPPVs going forward.

Lucha Underground 5.20.15 – Episode 28: Shoots and Ladders

OFFICIAL RESULTS
~ Non-Title Match: Champion Prince Puma defeated Marty the Moth Martinez @ 3:49 via pin [**]
~ DelAvar Daivari defeated Texano @ 3:52 via DQ []
~ Lucha Underground Trios Championship Ladder Match: Champions Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Angelico defeated The Crew (Castro, Cisco and Bael) @ 13:40 [***½]

* The windows for Cueto’s office are still busted from last week, and covered with boards.

Non-Title Match: Champion Prince Puma vs. Marty the Moth Martinez: Marty the Moth was creeping on Melissa the ring announcer, and he claims to be a descendant of one of the original Aztec tribes. Marty the Moth was all wacky and friendly, and Konnan did not buy this and demanded that Puma treat him like a chump. Marty the Moth attacked after hugging Puma and beat him down in the corner. They had a short back an forth match, Marty the Moth missed a moonsault and Puma hit the kick to the head, blue thunder driver and 630 for the finish. They gave Marty the Moth enough that this wasn’t a squash, and it was the right length for Puma to still look strong. This was short, but perfectly fine. Post match Hernandez came out, and Konnan called him a bitch and ran him down. Konnan said if he wanted a shot, Puma would finish him off. Hernandez teased coming to the ring, but backed off.

Vampiro Talks With Johnny Mundo: Vamprio hosted a sitdown interview with Johnny Mundo. This was really good and easily Mundo’s best work on the mic ever. He came off cool and cocky as he ran down El Patron, calling him overrated, overconfident and also not as good as he thinks. He said that El Patron will not be back, and that he’s not some guy in catering that El Patron can slap around. Mundo came off like a complete star here, and this was a great segment. Also, Johnny Mundo hates shirts. But to be fair, if I had abs like that, I would never wear a shirt either.

* Cueto meets with the Crew. He explains that he is giving them a chance at mortality by putting them in the trios title match. But says if they fail, hey will anger him and the Gods.

Texano vs. DelAvar Daivari: The feud started with the finals of the trios tournament, and continued as they had a non-match match on May 6th, where they went to a DQ in 14-seconds. Commentary made sure to push Texano as the face here, which is really odd because he had been a complete asshole heel and now because he’s feuding with the rich douche, we’re just supposed to accept that. It feels under developed. After all of these years, Daivari still does nothing for me as a performer. He’s just a dude that wrestles and does nothing to make me care one way or another. Big Ryck came out and attacked Texano and helped Daivari beat him down. Daivari drank his booze and then covered Texano as Ryck made the ref count the pin that doesn’t count. I guess that explains where Ryck got that bankroll last week.

* Catrina appears in Cueto’s office, flashes some cleavage and says that Mil Muertes can give him the sacrifice that he desires. She demanded he book Muertes and Fenix in a DEATH MATCH. She also said Muertes is more powerful than ever.

* Black Lotus left Dragon Azteca’s dojo without his approving or knowing about it. He only discovered this through reading her diary. We see her traveling as she heads to face Matanza. This led to the return of Chavo Guerrero. He agrees with Azteca’s fears, and made a deal. He will protect Lotus against Matanza in return for protection against “Mexico,” who he angered by attacking Blue Demon early on in the series. Chavo is doing this because he Guerreros and Cueto’s have feuded for generations.

Lucha Underground Trios Championship Ladder Match: Champions Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Angelico vs. The Crew (Castro, Cisco and Bael): Son of Havoc and Angelico battled early as Ivelisse is still hobbled, has a cast on her lower left leg and was on crutches. The Crew, being dick bag heels, attacked her right away and beat her down. Son of Havoc and Angelico did the heavy lifting, while the Crew relied on the numbers game and had good teamwork. The Crew used the boards from Cueto’s windows, as he was seen talking on the phone. We also had dudes tossed into the office as El Jefe kept talking on the phone. They kept a good pace, but the match lacked something; it just never got to that level where it felt as if it got great. It was fun and I liked it, and Son of Havoc and Angelico did well working for their team. Angelico did anther insane dove off of the office, dropkicking a member of the Crew off of the ladder. That boy ain’t right. Ivelisse returned and climbed (hopped up) the ladder, and managed to get a title down for the win. They had a lot to overcome with the injury, but turned in a good main event here. Ivelisse, Son of Havoc and Angelico are beautifully dysfunctional, but when they come together, they still manage to win.

* Next week Muertes vs. Fenix in a death match and Hernandez challenges Puma for the Lucha Underground Title.

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Good
The 411
While a bit of a downgrade from last week’s excellent show, which is to be expected, this week’s effort was still a good one. Hey provided a good main event, set up two matches for next week and also advanced the Black Lotus story, while also finding a way to reintroduce Chavo and linking that with his established story. Lucha Underground continues to produce well paced and thought out episodic TV. They have logical peaks and valleys, they peaked last week and came down a bit this week and look to peak again next week. This was a good show and the series continues to be very enjoyable and my favorite show of the week. Side note, I will say that I am very concerned that a season two has not been announced at this time. The longer we go without the announcement, the more I fear season two will not be a reality. I hope for the best because I really enjoy the product.
