Csonka’s Lucha Underground Review 5.27.15

Introduction
As a reminder, this will not be another traditional recap, but instead it will be a mash up of the Rs, Instant Analysis and my usual Twitter ramblings I would do during the shows; completely uncensored and as the ideas flow unfiltered to the old keyboard. Remember, this is a review; and I am here to review the show. As always, I encourage discussion and even disagreement, just do so in a respectful manner. I will be doing the review for Raw and most PPVs and iPPVs going forward.

Lucha Underground 5.27.15 – Episode 29: Fight to The Death

OFFICIAL RESULTS
~ Johnny Mundo defeated Aerostar @ 6:34 via pin [**¾]
~ Lucha Underground Title Match: Champion Prince Puma defeated Hernandez @ 12:46 via pin [***¼]
~ DEATH MATCH: Mil Muertes defeated Fenix @ 8:31 via pin (POSSIBLE DEATH) [***½]

* Black Lotus is arrives (presumably) at the temple and met by Chavo who says he is there to protect her, which was an agreement he made last week. Apparently Chavo’s grandfather was conveniently there the day Matanza killed Lotus’ parents.

Aerostar vs. Johnny Mundo: I liked a lot of what Mudo did early. In previous matches he would have quick exchanges with the other wrestlers, exchanging arm drags and other things and doing the old stand off of respect. Instead here he would take Aerostar down and work stroked and lay in the boots. He still has flash to him, because that’s the promotion’s style, but his mannerisms and facial expressions, along with a change in style was a nice change to reflect the heel turn. Aerostar got some good flashes here, but the aggressive style of Mundo was too much for him. Mundo hit a suplex to the corner and hit the end of the world for the finish. I think he should change the finisher as well or introduce an alternate one to reflect the attitude change, but overall this was a good in ring debut for heel Mundo.

Vampiro Talks With Sexy Star: SexyStar in subtitled. They discuss the feud with Pentagon Jr, and he mask vs. mask match with Super Fly. She hasn’t heard from him since. She was happy to defeat Pentagon, and she hopes to inspire women by defeating him. Next week, Star and Pentagon meet in a submission match. She promised that the feud would end when they meet. It was fine, they tried to put her over big but it felt flat to me. Nothing close to the Mundo interview from last week.

Lucha Underground Title Match: Champion Prince Puma w/Konnan vs. Hernandez: Hernandez actually has ring gear now, no shirt and baggy shorts. The black gear works well for him. They went at it right away, no bullshit locking up because they hate each other. This was predictably the speed and highflying of puma vs. the power of Hernandez, which is perfectly fine since it works. I really enjoy Konnan acting like a real corner man, telling Puma to let Hernandez gas out because he has no conditioning, it makes him feel like an actual manager and important. Vampiro generally annoys me, but his continued hate of Konnan is completely logical and well done. Konnan distracted Hernandez late, allowing puma to use a chair and swat Hernandez out of the air on his Super-Mex dive. Hernandez would fight back and it the boarder toss onto the ring apron, but then Puma hit a crazy dive off of the railing as he countered a second boarder toss. That led to a Puma near fall off of the springboard 450. Puma then missed the 630, and Hernandez got a near fall off of a reverse TKO of sorts. Hernandez tried a top rope splash and ate knees, they went back and forth for a bit and then Puma nailed a few kicks while sat up top and connected with the 630 for the win. This was a good and clean win for Puma, who worked really hard to make the match a fun one. But to me, it lacked drama as I never bough that Hernandez would or could win.

DEATH MATCH: Fenix vs. Mil Muertes: Muertes has Catrina and the guys that appeared as LUCHA GHOSTS with him! Fenix hit a dive to begin, but bounced off of Muertes. You’re fucked son. Muertes has a black mask and gear now, which looks WAY better on him than the old stuff. Muertes dominated early, until Fenix was able to start hitting shit like his run along the ropes kick and a big moonsault to the floor. That was the first time he got Muertes down, but as they battled to the floor Muertes took control back and destroyed Fenix with a steel chair shot to the head. As they continued the battle on the floor, Fenix kept scoring with high flying offense, including a double stomp off of the elevated railing. Muertes even hit a dove off of the top rope to the floor onto Fenix. Muertes is a freak, as he put Fenix on his shoulder and RAN up the steps and they battled on top of a storage room AND POWERBOMED HIM THROUGH THE ROOF! They went to a break and when we came back the lucha ghost men went after Fenix and carried him to the ring like it was the end of Godspell. They gave him to Muertes, who then hit the flatliner and that was all. For what they were going for (the spectacle and rebooting Muertes) it worked very well, but nowhere near the awesome Grave Consequences match that they had, but that was going to be hard t live up to.

* We see El Jefe with the Crew in the mystery warehouse, and he questions them about their loss last week. El Jefe refuses to be embarrassed, and they say someone has to pay. He makes the Crew choose, and they choose Bael and take him to the Matanza’s cage. BLOOD SPATTERS EVERYWHERE BECAUSE BAEL WAS MURDERED!

* End scene.

* Thanks for reading.

The final score: review Good
The 411
An overall good show this week. They did a good job of establishing heel Mundo in the ring, the Black Lotus saga continued, Puma took out his latest challenger in Hernandez and Muertes is back and reborn, seemingly unstoppable and with a crew of disciples. Add in the wacky death scene at the end (Cuerto DID say to the Crew that there would be a sacrifice if they failed) and the show continues to tell good stories in an episodic fashion and embrace their world of wrestling that they have created over the last 29 weeks.
